      I'm in the Hunter region in nsw Australia. In my first year growing blueberries I killed them because my pots were to small my second year I got the largest plastic pot I could find but that year I had sun scold problems and birds ate 90% of the fruit even if it was green so I fixed both problems at the same time, I made a shade house out of portable gazebos with 50% shade cloth for the roof and bird netting on the side and this year I got all of my berries!

      @@midei - oh, it was heaven. One day, I wiped her beak for her and she really liked it. Who knew their beaks were sensitive?! From there, we got more comfortable with me petting her more; her head, under her eyes, her throat. And, she loved for me to sing to her. She'd stand in a sheltered corner of my porch and I'd sit in a chair by the door and if I sang the lullaby song to her, she would close her little eyes and tilt her little head. I'd feed her treats and she'd eat a little, then come over for a bit of pets, and then go back to eat more & back and forth. She couldn't decide which she liked best. I'd sit on the steps and she'd come find things to peck at...an interesting pattern on my clothes or a flyaway hair. I really miss working in the garden and hearing that soft booock and looking around to see her. It just gave so much joy. Or when she'd run to me; they run so cute. She lived 4 houses away, at the end of the block. Sigh. Some day, I'd like to have a couple hens. She felt really healing and comforting to me.

    Just now watched this video…. I have Red Raspberries and Black Raspberries that i let grow wild in the back yard. I get about 10-12 1 gallon freezer bags every summer lol they’ve been growing there since the late 70’s. We love them. I make jellies, pie filling, syrup, etc. that carry us through until the following year when it’s time to pick again. Our neighbors and friends love when i start canning/preserving them. I’m in my 4th year of growing blueberries in containers. They are in grow bags mainly because clay and plastic don’t do well in western New York winters.
    For netting I put a tomato cage over each plant in early spring and periodically check to make sure the branches are growing inside the cage. After they flower and fruit start to develop, I cover each of them with extra large white mesh laundry bags, two per plant. One bag has the bottom cut out and is slipped over as a “sleeve” and anchored with landscape staples to the soil in the pot. The other bag is slipped over the top and clipped to the top of the sleeve with clothes pins. This netting method keeps not only birds, but harmful insects, chipmunks and rabbits out of them. Water goes right through the mesh and to harvest, I open up where the two bags meet.
    I hope this helps. 🫐

    • @virginiaflynn3536
      @virginiaflynn3536 9 місяців тому +7

      No, they stay outdoors. In the fall I put a fence around them with stakes to support it, and put raked leaves inside the fencing around them to protect them from the cold. Then I weave wire along the top of the stakes that supports the fencing and tie strips of fabric every 18-24” onto the wire. This deters deer from eating the blueberries bushes during the winter. We have deer that stroll through our yard and they have yet to venture near to the blueberries. I call this the “Blueberry Fortress.” 🤣

    My grandmother, who lived on a farm in Michigan, loved raspberries and passed the raspberry gene to me. She had wild blueberries out behind the barn, wild blackberries behind the garage, and raspberries nearly everywhere else. Not roses; raspberries. There were red, yellow, black, and purple raspberries and they all taste just a little bit different, with slightly different seasons. My uncle was the one, though, who taught me about "canning" raspberries - which just means that whatever you can't eat goes into the can, which eventually winds up in the house, to the benefit of those who didn't make the effort to pick them. I'd rather eat than can! 🥰

    • @catpride1323

      I was told you cannot plant red raspberries beside the other colors of them, because red being the dominant color would cause the other colors to eventually becoming red, due to pollination.
      But what your saying makes that untrue.
      I've always wanted to try the other colors, being in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, ive only seen red, only found out there was other colors about 5 years ago.
      How do the other colors taste?
      Which is the best?
      Thanks for sharing 😊

    • @jcdentoid
      @jcdentoid 3 місяці тому

      @@catpride1323 To my knowledge, that isn't how pollination works. What is generally advised is not to plant black raspberries near other colors of raspberries, because they are vulnerable to raspberry diseases that they could catch from the other types of raspberries. Around where I live, black raspberries are about the only thing that can handle my soil. Most raspberries can only grow in a loose soil, and struggle in clay soil, black raspberries which have a different growth habit appear not to have this problem though.
      Black raspberries are delicious, and are crunchy due to their larger seeds. I've had success with Jewel and Munger in my area, though I'm in a very different climate. I'd like to experiment with other varieties soon, especially the primocane producing ones so I get a longer season. Yellow raspberries have a lighter taste, with notes of stone fruit or tropical flavors. Anne yellow was very productive and vigorous, and worked here for a couple years before declining. Double Gold I tried but it failed, I'll likely try again with a pot. Finally purple raspberries allegedly have a similar taste as red ones, but are apparently sweeter. I tried growing royalty, but it failed in the clay soil. Brandywine is what I'll likely try to grow next, as its growth pattern is more similar to a black raspberry.
      Tayberries and Loganberries are cross breeds of raspberries with blackberries, which I'd also like to experiment with here to see if they're better adapted to clay soil. Those are said to have a unique taste slightly different than red raspberries.
      In general, most raspberries need an airy soil, like a loam or sandy loam. If you have a clay soil you'll need to pick out specific varieties of raspberries that don't spread by rhizomes the same way most raspberries do, or are more rot resistant. Black raspberries grow more like marionberries, in that most of their shoots grow out from a 'hill', so they're easier to control the spread of, unlike red raspberries which can become invasive.

    • @Crysark
      @Crysark Рік тому

      @@rlopez18m Sounds like some kind of blight or virus, either way yes you should trim and burn any affected spots. I'd steer away from fungicide unless it starts becoming uncontrollable, blight can only spread via touch, so as long as you dispose of the affected parts it should go away. Blight usually happens due to soil splashing on leaves due to there being blight spores in all soil worldwide. Try watering without splashing the plant once you clear all the affected parts, and trim any leaves touching the ground. You could also make a compost tea and use it as a foliar spray to defend against fungus that would hurt your plant. The beneficial microbes take residence on the leaves and reduce the chances of diseases significantly.

      some fungi are beneficial, like a lot of the ones that live in the soil and have symbiotic relationships with plants, and provide nutrients for them.

    Great topic, I was working in a nursery when some of the container variety raspberries got some publicity and were selling like mad, the fact that they're thorn-less makes them easy to work with (in most cases). I also started mulching my berries this year with sunflower seeds that I was feeding chickadee and junco's over the winter cause they're fun to watch and they help in my area with some of the pest pressure. And the last thing I'll say is that i'm experimenting this year, I put some garlic in with my blueberry plant, because it's said that they give off a little uric acid and so far it seems to be going well, it was just some leftover small cloves I had from my garlic planting and i'm not expecting them to produce a harvest, just to see if my blueberry appreciates the company.

      I grew a number of varieties of blueberries in containers for several years. Healthy plants. Lots of berries. There's more than one right way to do things. This worked for me. 14 gallon container. (14 gallons of soil is too heavy to lift. You can pull it with a rope.) Northern Highbush varieties for me. Depending on where you live, maybe Southern Highbush varieties. Must have at least 2 different varieties of the same type of highbush to get fruit. For example, 2 different Northern Highbush varieties. Select varieties for your zone with staggered ripening times. Do not pick dwarfs. Worst case, pick half highs. Soil recipe: equal parts pine bark fines (SMALL pine bark mulch), peat moss, compost (not composted manure) plus 1 tbsp gypsum per gallon and 1 tbsp epsom salt per gallon. Water: every day when it's warm. Occasionally add vinegar to the water. Do not allow the roots to dry out or sit in soggy soil. Fertilize: In the spring when the buds swell, add time released fertilizer for acid loving plants. (High nitrogen if you can find it.) Regular fertilizer will kill them. Fertilize with epsom salt a few times a year. Post harvest, add another dose of time release fertilizer. Unless your fertilizer adds calcium, add a handful of gypsum in August. In the fall, add a handful of garden sulfur. Winter: The hardiness zone of the plant refers to the above ground structure, not the roots. (Normally, the roots are kept warmer in the earth.) Unless you live at least 2 zones warmer than the limits of the plant, you need to protect the roots in the winter. I piled leaves generously up around the pot and 6" over the pot for the winter. If you live in a hot climate, you may need to protect the roots from the heat in the summer. Prune: blueberries in pots don't need a lot of pruning. But if you think the plant is overgrown, remove the oldest (thick, gnarly) canes (thick branches coming from the base). Short version, don't trim the length of the canes. Next year's fruit grows on the tip of this years canes. If you cut them off, you cut off next year's fruit. Harvest: Here's the big secret. Blueberries are NOT ripe when they turn blue. Leave them hang for a while. If the berry requires a tug to harvest, it's not ripe. If it rolls off easily by rolling between thumb and finger, it's ripe. If the fruit starts dropping off or shriveling, it's getting late. Generally, hanging means getting sweeter, but less crisp. Blueberries can hang a long time. Pick yourself a bowl and leave the rest until you are ready to eat them. Pests: I would have gotten zero fruit of any kind without bird nets. Make a simple frame from pvc pipe or wood. Drape bird net over the frame, not directly on the plants.
      I grew a range of fruits in containers. We ate fresh fruit from our "urban orchard" every day all summer until frost. Blueberries were the easiest to grow.

    Berries are the best, last year we put in 12 different brambles (blackberry, raspberry, boysenberry etc), 11 different blueberries (our native soil was 6-6.5 pH so a little sulphur to drop it that little bit), about 10-12 different strawberry varieties and some Midyims (native Aussie berry). Hoping to add another native a muntrie, this year.
    Our raspberries produced the first year, the same with the strawberries and the kids have been going nuts with the berries lol.
    I would plant strawberries into the pots as a living mulch.

    I was happy to come across this one, because I've got a pot growing black raspberries right now, from seed. I have several large black raspberry patches out back, and when I run the fruit through the food mill to get juice, I wind up with piles of mostly crushed seeds, and just toss them out the window into large pots outside. Left those out for a few months, and seeds around the edges of the pot started sprouting, presumably because they get the most natural water when it rained or dew formed. Was thinking when they start to get large enough to try repotting and then giving them to neighbours who want to start their own patches.

I won't say how many decades ago that was! but it takes years of observation to learn the plants, learn your soil (and if you're a renter, you learn alot about containers!), learn your WEATHER!!! (I check 2x a day, the world she is changing!), learn your garden's ecology (bugs, weeds, birds). That all takes time.... no other way... ask Dr. Jacques, you stare at a rock until you attain enlightenment... about that rock...then you find another rock....

    Lay a root bound or spiraling root system on its side before re-potting and roll it back and forth breaking the soil ball to avoid damaging the roots. really woody plants can at this point have their roots slightly trimmed, especiallly if you have any mushy over watered/rotted roots. unless there is a long taproot, you should try to lay the roots out as laterally as possible then backfill the pot to the original depth. Berries in pots need a bit less watering but a bit more attention to ph values to continue productivity
