  • Kidney diseases affect both children and adults. But some diseases can be diagnosed in children. Nephrotic syndrome affects people of all ages, but it is initially diagnosed in children in their early years.
Childhood nephrotic syndrome indicates that the kidneys are not functioning correctly. It usually results in different problems in the body, including:
    - High levels of protein in the urine
    - Low levels of albumin in the blood
    - Swelling of body parts
    - High levels of cholesterol and fat in the blood
A simple urine or blood test can detect this condition among children. A kidney biopsy is required in rare cases.
In this condition, the kidneys leak proteins into the urine. This causes rapid weight gain and swelling of different body parts. One of the first symptoms of this syndrome is swelling around the eyes, which is prominent during the morning.
Children with this syndrome are also at a greater risk of catching infections. However, the condition is treatable.
Childhood nephrotic syndrome responds well to steroids, which is one of the primary courses of treatment. Once the condition is treated, the children will not face any further risk and can live a healthy and normal life.
Pediatric nephrologists experienced in managing childhood nephrology syndrome can treat your child with steroids and advise the best preventive measures while the child is undergoing treatment. Dr. Shweta Priyadarshini, MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), Fellow (Pediatric Nephrology), is one of the best Pediatric Nephrologists in Hyderabad. Dr. Priyadarshini talks about the care and preventive measures to be taken once the child undergoes steroid therapy from 1:50.
If you see any symptoms of childhood nephrology syndrome in your children, consider consulting a pediatric nephrologist to diagnose the condition at the earliest and avoid any risks in the future. Get in touch with Dr. Shweta Priyadarshini online or at Apollo Hospitals Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad.
    Quick Fact Check
Q1 - What are the complications of nephrotic syndrome in children?
A1 - Childhood nephrotic syndrome may cause thromboembolism, cardiovascular disease, hypovolemic crisis, anemia, and acute renal failure. Children with nephrotic syndrome are also at high risk of infection. Since the immunity system is weakened due to the loss of proteins, infections become common.
If the condition is severe and the body does not respond to the treatment of steroids, it can eventually lead to kidney failure. The only solution to this is a kidney transplant.
    Is childhood nephrotic syndrome treatable?
Childhood nephrotic syndrome can be cured completely. Steroids are administered to manage the symptoms. Depending on how the body reacts to the steroids, additional medicines may be prescribed by a pediatric nephrologist.
Q2 - What does a pediatric nephrologist do?
A2 - A specialist who handles the diagnosis and treatment of all kidney problems in children is called a pediatric nephrologist. They can identify and diagnose acute or chronic kidney diseases among children between the age of one to eighteen.
A child suffering from renal disease should be taken to a pediatric nephrologist instead of a nephrologist who treats adults.
Can a pediatric nephrologist treat childhood nephrology syndrome?
Pediatric nephrologists are trained to treat childhood nephrology syndrome, among other renal diseases.
Q3 - Who is the best pediatric nephrologist in Hyderabad?
A3 - Dr. Shweta Priyadarshini is one of the best pediatric nephrologists in Hyderabad. Book an appointment with Dr. Shweta Priyadarshini on Apollo 24|7 app and consult in your preferred mode. She is available for both online and in-clinic consultation.
Can children live a normal life with childhood nephrotic syndrome?
Most children respond to the primary course of treatment unless the condition is too serious. Children can live an absolutely normal life without fear of remission once the treatment is done. The treatment can go on for several weeks and even months, so the symptoms will take time to disappear.

Sir i am 40 years old. I had nephrotic syndrome when i was child (from age 5 to12), my belly, face and eyes would swell. Doctors forbad me to consume salty food, rice, tomatoes and other spicy food. No i am quite healthy. I daily go to gym for work out, all my friends consume whey protein... I also want to use whey protein but i am hesitant as i fear that my kidneys can become damaged again... Plz give me advice wether i should use whey protein or not?? I will be eagerly waiting for your response. Thank you
