I like the X strokes following the circles as it blends in any microscopic ridges that may happen with the circles, more so on problem razors and smileys.

Wayne goddards 50$ knife shop book describes polishing a knife. The pattern he describes was
      -|- X

Hi Lynn, just bouncing some things around in my head.. I recently honed a Dovo 6/8 with rolling x strokes. It turned out not bad at all. It could use some more work but it shaved well enough. What worked for me was as I observed watching you. You do in fact lift the spine up to rock it but you do not torque/twist the spine.
Am I right to assume that you maintain a flat angle as you rock back and fourth?
I found myself doing that sub-consciously. Will using rolling x strokes on a small smile like a Dovo (mine had one when I got it, only at the toe and heel) negatively affect the razor?
    Thanks Mr. Abrams

I bought a new dovo and I sharpened on a 1000 to the point the the middle of the blade is everso slightly concave. I don't know if i'd feel comfortable with these more advanced techniques. If I continue with lighter straight strokes wouldn't the middle wear down faster than the sides and even itself out?

Is it necessary to do x-strokes after circles, or can you hone strictly with circle strokes?
