I used to tell my design students what my predecessors used to tell me... when you think you have spent enough time "idiot proofing" your design, just wait a while and society will hand you a worse idiot... Safety First!
Local public range, just like anywhere else, when people are downrange no one can touch anything. One day, some idiot decided he was in a hurry and wanted to pack up. He went under the red chain, which gets put up when the range is cleared. He was quickly loading his stuff, inserted a magazine, advanced his bolt... He ended with a ND at the 100 yard berm while quickly casing it, missing 5 people. No lack of idiot gun owners.
This is a great video. The best way to have your range rules tightened up or your privileges revoked is to not follow the rules or to just not use good sense. Range rules only describe the worst behavior tolerated. They don't limit you from behaving better than required. Please don't hesitate to remind the rule breakers to use good sense and follow the rules. Report them if they refuse to follow the rules. Firing ranges are tough to keep open. Safety violations are the quickest way to increase restrictions or to close your range. These behaviors hit my hot button too. Don't be the person that causes a new restrictive policy to be implemented.
Belong to several private clubs with strict admissions and rules.... you can't legislate or make rules to take away stupidity. You can only ban it when it happens and hope no one gets hurt.
Today I was setting up targets on a 300-yard range when I heard a weed eater or chainsaw. When I stepped back a little i saw a guy on top of the backstop trimming vegetation! There's a 100-yard range right next to this one. Could have been tragic if someone shot high off the 100-yard line!
I have one or two that I notice occasionally, but the burden is very low based on my experience to date. I really should go do that follow-up appointment...
I guess I missed something, I shoot pistols on rifle ranges and hit what I am shooting at up to 200 yards. Are they just crappy shots, or is there something else?
Because of the layout of this facility, the road I was standing on is directly behind the rifle range berm. The pistol shooter's target was set up such that a round passing through would impact the range floor and ricochet over the berm. If the target had been set right in front of a berm there would have been no problem.
This may be a stupid question. I know weather conditions and other conditions along with human error is a consideration. Is there a 30 caliber hunting bullet for a .308, preferably in 150gr, that can be loaded to shoot very close bullet hole in bullet hole at 100 yards? Thank you, Jeff D
I had really good luck with the Barnes TSX in the 168 grain weight. Those bullets were amazing consistent in precision. While I haven’t tried them in 30 cal, every Berger hunting bullet I’ve tried to date has shot amazingly small groups. I just came home from testing 6mm 108 gr Elite Hunters, and they are superb.
@@winninginthewind Awesome. Thank you so much for responding. I actually just bought Barnes vor-tx in a .223 55gr. I want to try on deer where I hunt short range. 100 yards and less. Thank you so much. I will try them... Jeff D
@winninginthewind I'm not even sure within 100 to 150 yards, even with a Barnes TSX if a .223 would be an ethical shot. I've been watching video's on this for my granddaughter and have very mixed feelings about it. What's your thoughts? Thank you, Jeff D
Holy cow Keith!!! That make feel unsafe anytime we even drive to the pits and they all shooting. Maybe they should be made to call a ceasefire while we are in transit until we are safely in the pits.
Where was the range master? At our local small range, they replaced the posts holding the plywood up and the plywood because somebody shot the old ones (power pole size) in two. Only a week since I was there and the new post has several 45 cal holes in it.
Wow.... lots of new people getting out to the range with that 2020 purchase for the first time who don’t have a clue! Be kind, you can usually spot them from a mile away, I try to be friendly and approachable, love to offer the BASIC FACTS about Safty. Before someone gets the 86 or worse injured.
The shooter was identified and will be facing disciplinary action. It's a membership club. If you do something like this, you are going to face consequences...
Luckily they weren’t Firing a RIFLE! How did they not know the lane/ally/bay/range was Cold/Closed/ Ceasefire. The bigger issue is there was no indicator that people where down range.
That road is usable during a hot range. It's behind the berm where, even if a rifle shot is fired over the berm, it will pass safely over the top of the road area. It only becomes a problem when someone shoots a cartridge that doesn't have adequate energy to make it over the top. There is a huge sign at that range that explicitly limits the activity to rifles with a minimum velocity of 2000 fps.
Exactly why I don’t go to public ranges.
Yeap.

I certainly agree! The only problem is the knuckledragging mouth breathers that cause the problems aren't watching your videos.
If you know one of them, share it! I was just venting.
There is always that one of two guys who don’t think they have to follow the rules and some else had to pay the price with there life!

Those same people drive cars and trucks. That actually scares me more...

I use a members only range and I still only go during the week when everybody’s at work. I only hunt during the week days for the same reason…
Hey, even at Sportsman’s clubs with membership, we have people walk out on the range during fire

It's ashamed that things like this has to be repeated. Firing a pistol on the 600 y range. Talk about a waste of ammo.
Hey, i came from your Pvc ablation video and was gonna ask how you doing and how your pvc burden has turned to, if there was any rebound or anything

Were the outstanding citizens kicked out forever?
They are suffering disciplinary action at the hands of the Board of Directors.

@@winninginthewind I'm hoping that one of the consequences in this case is that they must complete an NRA or Hunter safety coarse.

A rifle would have been safe. The problem was that the bullets were striking the range floor instead of the berm.
