My advice for the industry would be;
1)Don't believe a single thing someone promises you. It's more important to fill a chair for 2 months than it is to not be called a liar. They will hire you full on expecting you to quit so they will promise you anything it takes for you to get in that truck.
2) Don't expect to have a truck like this, not for a while. For lack of a better term, you need to pay your dues, and sometimes, even after that you still don't get a truck like that. If Billy Badass is what you're looking for, sometimes you will have to make sacrifices to get that, companies pay less but have nicer equipment ect. But no kid, fresh cdl, is going to get put into a long nose, loud, clean truck. You will get put into a plastic automatic volvo or freightliner because if you smack it up, it doesn't matter.
3) Never sign a lease. If you want to buy a truck, go to the bank, get a loan. The company pushes leases because it makes them more than the freight, Prime is a truck sales company, not a trucking company.
4) Learn to specialize. The industry isn't like the 70s, you're not going to make it big driving whatever wherever. Learn hazmat tanker, flatbed, or oversized. Stick to one thing and get really good at it. Find the jobs that pay the most, and then make yourself a good applicant to that job, don't expect your door swinging on the general market to match to those specialty jobs. 99% of the time, if it's in a box, it pays less.
5) Respect. Respect everyone everywhere you go, shippers talk down to you, smile and wish them a good day, someone cuts you off, just keep going. Respect for the driver has disappeared over the years, and it's because our respect for ourselves, and the public, disappeared as well. You are going to be a professional, act like it.
Well said! I don't know squat about hauling, but from my own experience loading/unloading your rigs, it all sounds accurate. Like dodging potholes on a forklift on some of those trailers! Including gettin stuck. Thx for your words of wisdom!

Congratulations... Since a kid my family knew i liked the idea being on the road long periods (greyhounds, truckers) but for it to be my career they look me crazy... Luckily my older cousin hotshot cdl regional, he got me in it so i can do it on the side, i am in college.

I’m all over the place, Vegas this weekend, my shasta next weekend, pebble beach this week etc. I go to school in SD CA. Put over 30k miles on my Lexus each year. Thinking about getting cal ASAP it has always been a dream job for the longest time.

Very good points. I was able to skip the OTR stage of my driving career by getting on with a small local gravel company at 18 years old. I met the right people and got the right information and after a few local driving jobs I bought my first truck at 23. A 1996 freightliner classic. Exactly 1 year later I bought my first Peterbilt. A 2003 379 with a 6NZ Cat named "Must be nice" because that's what everyone always told me since I was home every day and made plenty money. The truth is anyone can do it. I started out with nothing but a dream, good credit, and little money for a down payment. I'm almost 25 now and still have the Freightliner sitting at my house because it's so sentimental to me.

im 16 and being a truck driver has been my lifelong dream, the past three generations of my families have been truckers... its in my blood. ive been going in a truck since i took my first steps. I plan on owning my own rig one day, love the vids keep it up
might I suggest to leave the girls alone then. Get hook on a girl you could very easy lose that dream, I know i did. Love trucks since I was 9 or 10. huge passion. I girl knocked up that pretty much killed it, Yes I still drove twice in fact, But with a family Truly another level of hard!! just a warning family and that life does not go well together.
if you could find a local job to start that would be great. then go try otr. or just straight go otr. but i recommend starting local

I've been driving for 20 years and you are the first person I've ever seen on YT to tell people how it really is when they start out.
Good advice.. I never went OTR. Out of school I got a job at Pepsi starting at 20 per hour..this was 12 years ago,had to offload product and stock shelves...now I just transport product from facility to facility making 34 an hour..I'm home everyday, its day shift, weekends off and every holiday off paid..I average about 80 to 90k depending on if drivers stick around or not. I will eventually buy my own truck once my kids are out of the house and my wife and I will team up..you don't need to go otr. Don't try to fill the image of what otr guys make it to be...guys are making close to 100k by making extra runs and working an extra day. This is just transporting product now, drop and hook. I didn't see a reason to take the hard beatin path.

Great advice man! I got my CDL almost a year ago. I had a corporate job, the reason I got my CDL was for a back up plan more or less. Well my employer eliminated my job this past month and I was fortunate enough to be hired by a trucking company running local. My training consisted of a few times driving with one of the owners to learn how to float and operate everything how they wanted things done. I’m home daily and drive a Pete. I’m still learning and getting comfortable with everything but I’m rolling and making my way to that first paycheck!

I moved on from the first driving job. I now drive truck for a road construction company. Mostly local work with some projects being out of town. The pay is great and it’s seasonal work so I have the winter months off.

I’m really hoping it takes off I got all the legal stuff and I’m unemployed so….now is the perfect time for a miracle to happen
Facts my girlfriend left me when I started driving It emotionally messing you up and you feel like your life can't get any worse the sleepless nights are the worst the man it was probably the best thing that happened cuz I met a beautiful girl after that while I was trucking delivering at a ware house she gave me her number I didn't even ask because honestly I thought she was to hot for me lol I never regret this life trucking will change your life for shore

That’s why the turnover rate is so high in this industry. False promises put into people’s heads in CDL schools... along with people thinking that it’s easy money. I lost count of how many people I’ve trained through the years that leave the job after a month or two. Most folks just aren’t cut out for 14hr days and getting tossed around in the saddle. It’s cliche but it really is modern day cowboying. Up before the sun and still on the road when it goes down.

That is the same in the uk but its 15hour day in stead of 14 still just trying to find a company in America or Canada that will help or take on a British truck
@@chrisstanley6656 Alberta has a very popular truck driver program for non Canadians. You should look into it. Its similar to their skilled labor program and can lead to you becoming a permanent resident.

As a disabled veteran, I can appreciate your honesty and straight forward speaking. The same thing can be said of joining the military, which I did. It sucks starting out, but it is what you make of it. And, after a time, it gets better. Thank you for the video. I have often considered perhaps trying to drive a truck, but I have military issues that make me unstable. My mother was a weighmaster in the early 80's, so I have an understanding of THAT end of things, then in the military I was a diesel mechanic on battle tanks. So, there again I understand THAT end of it.
I only recently started watching your videos, and I couldn't be happier. In place of actually driving a truck, you fill a void in my life. So I owe you thanks for that as well. The video that really peaked my interest was when you visited Iowa80. I wish the video was a bit larger and covered more, but I liked it none the less.
Growing up, I remember talking to truckers and listening to them talk and complain about their companies. Everything from dirty practices of "we will buy you a truck" then when the last payment hits "oh..gee.. we dont have work for you" and magically after they lose the truck "hey we found work for you, to sabotage of trucks, unfair company to company practices and a LOT more. But, I would still try driving if I thought my military physical and mental problems wouldn't hinder it. I grew up listening to all the horror stories (Roseburg, Oregon) from swift, knight trucking, and a few others I forget. I've even heard of some of the horror stories from weighmasters on both ends of things, from weighmasters being dicks because they hated a specific trucker, to truckers hating the weighmasters. One trucker where I lived got pushed so far, that he drove his truck and trailer through the weigh scale, and got sent to prison for it.

Great advice! I'm a prime example of the perfect candidate, no kids, no wife, been doing straight truck route driving for 6+ years with 14-17 hour days of not only driving but also heavy lifting. I'm ready to make the transition to my CDL.
Life is funny. I don’t believe in luck or coincidence. Whether or not there is some pre ordained path embedded in the ether or not, our path is laid out by a constant series of choices. Literally millions of your choices brought you to this point. Something a seemingly inconsequential as choosing a different truck stop that day or taking a few extra minutes here or there and your life would be totally different and you probably don’t have this channel and I’m not sitting here typing this and looking forward to your next video.
Anyway I will shut up now. Great video. Thanks for speaking truth and thanks to you and all the other truck drivers out there for doing what you do.
My dad and grandpa were both truck drivers and I wanted to go otr when I was 18 but couldn't get hired anywhere because I was too young. I'm 31 now and have been an electrician since I was 18 but every now and then I get this itch to just drive into the horizon. I can't explain it, I think my dna has a hint of diesel I cant shake.

That’s crazy that you are sharing that story because I’m currently 18 and I want to become an electrician but I’m also interested in getting my CDL because of my uncles. Would you say becoming an electrician was worth it?

I'm almost 22 and I've been driving 26ft box trucks 26,000 GVWR with a class C license since I was 18. The contract I had up until last year kept me working almost all the time, literally. We don't have any logbooks so we can drive as much as we can. This meant my homelife become nothing, destroyed my relationship with my high school girlfriend who I thought I was going to marry and three others after. I can attest that you hit the spots on that dead on. I really appreciate all the heads up on getting my class A. My current boss does both box trucks and flatbed and ill be getting on with him for a while, just that 'in' you were saying. He even wants to get an OTR contract for me. However this is the third company I've been with, and the other two were absolutely horrible. Terrible bosses, managers, contracts. Finally came back here and im staying. Thank you for the upload!

40 years in trucking. Definitely a tough business. I do tankers and low boy work only. In my career I did one dry van. It's not for the faint of heart. It can ruin personal relationships quickly. Do your homework before you get into any trucking job. Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos.

I always wanted to drive a truck since I was little. My grandpa drove OTR through the 70's up into the late 80's when he found a local company and stayed there until he passed in 96. Turned 21 in 2002 but ended up doing whatever in a miserable time for work in my early life. Things got better and in 2011 got hired on at Daimler Trucks in NC and now I build Freightliners. Working there has given me a life I thought I'd never have. Hope to one day be able to drive OTR but following advice that many truckers on here give, I think I'll wait until my children are older and talk my wife into team driving.

If you want to stay in your general area, see if waste management is in your area, they will train you on any piece of equipment you want too for free, you just need a class b CDL

Im 18 turning 19 in a couple months, have had my cdl for 3 months now. Im lucky because my grandpa already has a small company that I can drive for. Hope to get my own peterbilt/kenworth here in a a year or so. Love watching your vids man, you're definitely a good role model! Stay safe brother
At that age, you have to do it right. Most people your age can't handle it properly, so it's important for you especially to hold up the standard. Your generation is being judged by your words and actions.
I'll be starting the classes soon, But i appreciate your videos and many others. Your experiences and others showed me many pro's and con's of this kind of life. I have just begun, as a guy who has been indoors almost all my life. I am looking forward to this new adventure feels. I am sure I'll hit the ups and downs, and as a kid growing up this was one of my first dreams. Many others I've either lost or just can't do them anymore. Almost feels like I'm jumping ship. As they say, i got myself into this, Got to make this happen and not lose hope.

A very valuable lesson to learn for all at the outset: Pay your dues and put up with the people and the stuff, rewards do not come easily. Hard work creates it's own "luck". Maybe use this time of life to start buying rental property? That could lead to freedom and security: a comfortable retirement, a way to settle down if you choose, some equity if you want to start your own business some day.... Good luck young man, you are wise and on your way to whatever you dream.

I have to say that truckers are some of the nicest people I've met in my life. It seems like you guys carry yourselves in a way I would expect to see in a true Americana occupation. You seem, for as young as you are, and as briefly experienced in trucking as you are to be a rare professional with the right kind of head on your shoulders where you understand it's not easy to be out on the road and having to put up with the absubaties of general life and trucking and yet still be professional and what the younger generation needs to look up to. You bring positivity with you and I'm very impressed to see it as a 37 year old man who has witnessed my generation and the generation after it forget what respect and hard work will grant you. Keep up with where you want to go because you have a good head on your shoulders that is so sorely needed in the working world!
40 frack trucker rooms for truckers from Texas I took care of them and cleaned their rooms. I was administrator and housekeeper manager at the facility . I learned so much and this video Explains Everything as I Knew it too. You sir were spot on. It's a hard job and not for married folks for sure. Unless you're relationship is totally strong. I have actually slept in my truck parked in the yard because I couldn’t sleep in my bed at home. Getting out of the truck was the best decision I have made. After saying that once you get diesel I your blood it never gets out. I think about driving everyday and truly miss driving the truck but not the lifestyle. It’s a rough life at times but it can be a lot of fun as well. Like the channel keep them videos coming. WHOOP WHOOP

2 months solo right now. Got my CDL through Roehl's GYCDL program. Loving it so far. It has it moments where you just want to get stupid but its part of what I signed up for. Pretty much a loaner so I'm used to the solitude and as far as the ole lady goes... she's cool with what I do. Its actually made our relationship better. And if she steps out so be it. More money that stays in my pockets to spend on my granddaughter.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. For sure, this is the message that you don't get from the recruiters. All I ever wanted was exactly this dream--Deep Purple W9--and for over 10 years I got to do it in the music industry! I married a great woman who was supportive (even went on tour with me). For $$ reasons, I sold my 1st truck 6 months after buying it (tires aint cheap when you need more than one at a time). When my twins were born 3 months pre-mature, I made the tough choice to leave the road for a "stable" paycheck and family health insurance. I stopped driving 15 years ago and I often say, "I miss the trucks, just not the life" I keep my CDL and all my endorsements (Haz & Tank) though just in case I might ever want or need to go back. Watching these vids are fun for me, thanks.

Loving your videos man. Got my CDL in 2000, and my first few years were miserable. First otr job paid me 10 cents per mile for 6 weeks of training (talking about starving LOL.), and then 20 cents per mile in my first truck. Now I pretty much do what I want, stay within an hour or two from home in a day cab and make $18.50 an hour to drive 6am-4pm m-f and go home. It’s all about getting the experience.

The industry is tough.... my family had a trucking company for 50 plus years, my whole family is all truck drivers, and they all told me don’t become a truck driver. But I can’t not be one it’s in my blood. I know it’s gonna be tough when I get my license but I know I’m definitely gonna love it. Thank you for your videos and this video. Also, kick ass boots!
People need to know this stuff. A little understated, though. Sounds like you've had your trials, but you've had it better than some. 27 years into this, I could tell you some pretty rough stories. Company shenanigans are the biggest factor. Poor maintenance, thieves, broken promises and double standards...the list goes on. But glad to see you hit the other side of the coin and address some issues that most people want to brush under the rug.

20 years out here and I’m still surprised at the level of incompetence I see out here. These poor kids get lied to and misled into this lifestyle and they are so unprepared and scared to make even simple backing moves. I don't have any intention of getting a license to drive a truck in the Netherlands as I don't even have a car license. It's good to see a video like this to talk about the hard things of the job.
And watching your videos and playing games like American Truck Simulator fills up my "needs"

This guy is right but I got my experience and now I drive local and I love it.
My dad was a truck driver I spent the first 17 years in the jump seat and a little bit in the driver seat😎 I fell in love with trucking at a young age sitting in those long nose Pete's listening to that turbo and Jake's singing there wonderful song it don't get no better then that, I've also seen the the good and bad parts of the industry you'll meet some real good people and some real shitty people but at the end of the day those other drivers out there are your brothers and sisters and help you out just as much as family will, it's one hell'UVA life style people wouldn't understand but wouldn't trade it for the world

Those first couple of years can be brutal. I was lucky, my uncles owned log trucks. So I drove them in the Cascades till I went into the Marines. It has been my fall back job, in between contracts, for decades. Finding a good company to work for is like pulling teeth, and forget about a home life.

I do not truck drive, I pipeline and build wind farms across America. I have an awesome family who feels the strain of what I do for a living. I come home once every couple of months. YOU hit it spot on in this video on everything bud. IF you can not handle being away from home or away from loved ones and do not have the drive to go get it, you will never make it out here.
im 44 yro always wanted my cdl daddy drove and i rode alot. but i went into mechanics. i became a factory mechanic for a very recognizable auto manufacturer..dream job right? i left that job after 9 years and went to TDI paid cash for tuition like you, i was blessed with a freind that put me in a glider.....first dispatch...Shelbyville ,TN to Litiz, PA, then to Indy grossing 78k. very very scary for a rookie

Pretty cool that you are willing to be honest about Trucking. I been driving for 5 years now and i have felt that pain. but it getting better and it has taken five years. folks really need to here this. My truck of choice is Volvo , just fyi. Be safe out there!!
been behind the wheel for over 20yrs now ...everything this young man said is TRUE he's even being nice about it and the type of people and bullshit you will have to put up with on the road..and to anyone new drivers out there watching this or reading my comment..know this driving is not for everyone it is a hard demanding job that requires alot of dedication and focus, theres no shame in bowing out.its not for everyone.

not a easy life been in the industry over 20 years, if you do get into it try and get something where your home at the end of the day, personally I've been shit on by many companies, went without food, bad weather, bad situations where im wondering what the hell am i doing, so if you do, try and go local, that way your home daily

I started driving in '91. Did it for a couple of years, quit, got married, had children, got divorced and remarried and back in a truck in '08. Lots of truth in your video. When you start out in trucking most likely you will end up at a "training" company like Swift, Trans Am, Schneider, JB Hunt, Werner, etc. You're right that it's a crap job the first year or two. After that you have more options for jobs. But really it's not a job, it's a life. My husband and I run team. We've busted our butts to get where we are now. Finally got our own authority and our truck and trailer owned free and clear. For those thinking you want to buy your own truck and get your authority, it takes money to make money. Insurance premiums alone run around $18,000 or more a year depending on where you're based, age of truck, driving history. Then there's the seemingly endless other expenses. IFTA, KYU and NYHUT every quarter, fuel, drug consortium, factoring fees, tolls, repairs, maintenance, and on and on. (And the occasional binge buy at the chrome shop, LOL) No social life because you're never home. Missing out on a lot of family events because you can't get a load home. Break downs which cost you money while you sit not making money.
I feel you about not being able to sleep in your bed at home. Even when we are home I'd rather sleep in my truck. A normal bed in a real bedroom is too weird. Queen size bed in an actual bedroom. I can't get comfortable in such an open space.

From your first video I had a sense that you were the 'real deal'. Your hardships have made you stronger and left you with purpose and a big heart it seems. I think you just firmed up my subscription for good.
Watching this guys videos really helped me get the concept of how to shift a truck. I have to get my class a CDL for my new job and they want me to take the test in a 14 (?) speed digger truck. These videos help me get a better understanding on how to shift them and try to grasp the concept of splitting the gears.
Very very truthful description of this life we live. I know the hardship being on the road with a pregnant wife at home. You really rely on family. But she knows the ins and outs. I ran a 24 7 wrecker company almost 2 decades before turning to driving truck and we've been together for 12 years of that. She knows how to handle things when im out for days. It will definitely test you and your family at times. Especially when it gets slow and you dont know if the rent can be paid or groceries bought.
you would make a hell of a driver trainer, done it myself both over the road and at a school, its a hell of alot of fun if you have the attitude for it

I’ve been driving for about 15 years now and you are right on it . I was lucky and didn’t have to drive for a start up company I had a friend let me run under his authority. I actually bought my truck before I had my CDLs so I guess I got really lucky and also went through a divorce as you said you have to have a strong relationship, keep shifting driver

🎯, 100%on point, you just described my whole experience starting out as a trucker 19yrs ago, I started out with "England" and any trucker that's familiar with that company already know the deal with them, very little pay and shitty miles but I weathered the storm and finally doing great. Keep up the good work and as a new subscriber I see that what you do and what you go through as a trucker is the same as me.
