Sperrin Mountains | Banagher Glen to Mullaghmore

- A walk of 24km👣 from the old forest in Banagher Glen (which is a Special Area of Conservation) to the summit of Mullaghmore Mountain in the Sperrins and back. A wet spell had the rivers in good flow, droplets of water covered everything and early mist rose and cleared to blue sky☀. I took the opportunity to litter pick along a stretch of the high Moydamlaght Road, lifting 5 large bags of litter♻ This took longer than expected and it was dark well before I was back at the carpark. A lovely day walking through varied landscape.

I know I used to have a wee gurn about the rain years ago, but the older I get I realise it's why we have such beautiful places, when you look around the world at the fires, drought and the rest of it I think we have it just right!
Not sure about 'just right' at the minute with the amount of rain we have been having over our 'Summer'🌨😊 Banagher Glen is a beautiful place though and all that rain has it looking like a rainforest with those old growth trees covered in other plants. I agree that we have it pretty good here overall in terms of the weather where some other parts of the planet are really struggling👍

Lovely Gerry! Nice to have the sounds of water and silence brought into my sitting room 😊 Well done on the litter clearing - cans and plastic bottles thrown from passing cars I assume? The magic of nature outweighed the destructive humans...clearing mist, raging water, winter light and distant mountain tops were food for the soul! 😎
Cheers Miriam👍 The sound of water literally soothes the soul (in my humble opinion) and I had it from all directions and many forms on this trip😊 Passing cars alright and no better place to discard your rubbish high up with little chance of anyone seeing you, not that many people would care if they were seen! Every frame a masterpiece, you got some beautiful light Gerry , sometimes it’s hard to convey a scene via video but you portrayed it masterfully. I’ve always wanted to visit Banagher , now I’ve good reason to . Such a lovely hike Gerry .

How absolutely stunningly beautiful Gerry, thank you for your efforts to remove litter from the roadside.
I travelled that road last year on my motorcycle between Draperstown and Dungiven and was appalled at the amount of rubbish on the roadsides. "Energy" drink cans and bottles seemed to make up 60-70% of it. I stopped several times to take a photograph looking towards Benevenagh in the distance and ended up having to move cans and plastic bottles to get a view without litter in it. There literally was something approximately every metre on both sides of the road. People should appreciate what we have instead of desecrating it with their waste. I don't know what the answer is but well done 👏👍 and thanks again
Cheers Richard👍 I must have lifted hundreds of cans, bottles and food containers from about half a mile of road. I like the idea of the deposit/return schemes that are being introduced which add so much to the initial price of drinks which can be redeemed by taking the drinks container back for recycling - I honestly think a financial incentive (along with continuing education) is the only answer. It is also cool that there are a good few people out there fighting back by litter picking though it is only holding the flow!

Jaysus Gerry fair play for picking up all that litter. It's terrible how people treat these places. The slieve blooms are just as bad in places.

Hi I really enjoyed your video. I'm a local photographer and have spent quite a bit of time up and around Banagher Glen and Altnaheglish Reservoir taking photos as it's so beautiful up there. Took a walk up around Mullaghmore last week heading up through Moydamlaght Forest near Moneyneaney and I totally agree with you as regards the amount of litter along the Birren Road, it's a total disgrace, with the vast majority of it being Red Bull, Monster and Boost Cans which leads me to believe that it's the younger generation that is responsible for the majority of this littering. Anyway thanks for the great video and hat off to you for all the litter picking. Mike
Cheers Mick👍 It is so beautiful at Banagher, especially when it is full of life. I was at Mullaghmore this week, starting from the forest and heading over the summit and back along the road - with snow and ice❄😊 I don't think those roads are ever visited by the Council for litter picking so it just builds up and gets overgrown. I have litter picked there a couple of times and will probably do it again in the future♻😊 Thank you for watching👍

Fantastic video, Gerry, very atmospheric throughout and full of stunning views!! You've got a unique gift for spotting nature and plant life. Loved the waterfall cascade and how close you got to it. So sad to see the rubbish on the road and well done on picking it up. We live on a b road and regularly we have to pick the rubbish outside our front hedge, mostly chip shop waste, I suspect thrown by young people, the so called recycling generation. Cheers Ashley👍Banagher is a special place for nature and plant life with so much to take in - even in Winter. The rivers there are superb with a good flow of water after rain. Litter along our roads is endemic and has to be done every 4-6 weeks around Antrim, though there are some cool people out making a difference👍 I have my eye on the road to the top of Slieve Gallion which is in a similar state and plan (at some stage) to litter pick to the top. Wow, what a space gerry through the Glen and reservoir. Yeah, it's a water world bro and you and I love it. It penetrates every time. There sure has been a lot of rain - the Wye is claiming some victims again this year - flood galore. Good to see the overflow there though and shout above its raw. Brilliant atmosphere on top and views - you captured it well and hey captured some rubbish too. All that's slung out of windows. Maan some people but well done for the clean up and catching the car park open. Here's to 2024 mate - all the best. Mark

Hi Gerry, I'm glad you didn't include any music in the early part of this video as you captured the beauty of nature at its best, lovely images. Dumping litter, some people don't appreciate what they have, but that seems to be a sad part of the society we now live in. You'll do the district council out of a job😁 Fair play to you👍👍

Cheers Patrick👍 Banagher is a place that wows no matter the season and is well worth visiting in all 4. It is pretty bare at the moment and that allows sight of the rivers down through the trees, in the summer all you get is the sound of the water. It is absolutely full of life in Spring/Summer🌳🌳

Some nice artistic nature shots caught on camera there! Banagher dam and overflow was some feat of engineering and construction back in the day. I saw midges flying enjoying the morning sun! You gotta get a cupp!!! Love a cuppa! Keep 'er lit Gerry!

Was surprised that there was still flying things, though all this unsettled weather has kept it pretty mild.
Beautiful day Gerry! A nice long walk through the beautiful Sperrin Mountains! Fun to see everything so fresh with rain drops and see all the flowing water. The stair steps at the dam are really pretty, and quite loud- lol. I noticed moss and ferns in the woods, do you know if you have licorice ferns? Those are the single frond ferns that we have here… I’m mostly familiar with our ferns.
Too bad about all the trash along the road- great job getting 5 bags filled up! Maybe people will try to keep it cleaner now. 👌👍👍 Happy 2024! 🎉🎉 Jen
Jennifer, Banagher Glen is a lovely old growth oak forest and it is amazing to see all the mosses and ferns growing on the trees and in the woodland. I did have to google and it seems licorice ferns are native to your part of the world and we have lady fern, male fern and the common polypody which can grow on trees. It has been wet for months now as a rollercoaster of weather systems have come across the Atlantic though we have a nice big high pressure settling down over us at present☀ All the best for 2024😊

Cheers Siobhan👍 Banagher is well worth a visit, especially for the old oak woodland and the rivers that have created the steep valleys. The dam and reservoir are pretty cool too. That mountain road has a fair bit of traffic and it is easy to toss something out when finished with it, just not in my nature to let all that rubbish lie as I walk past it👍

Cheers Jason👍 Banagher excites and amazes every time I visit and it is great after lots of rain to see those rivers in full flow👍 Not sure if I know anywhere that would stand up to it in terms of old woodland. Glenarrif has the ravines and waterfalls and the ability to walk along them though not the variety of forest life. If you find somewhere please let me know😊
I went over to Glenarriff for a walk after some heavy rain and it was absolutely spectacular. Best walk I’ve been on thus far in Ireland. Thanks so much for the recommendation! Have a great new year Gerry.

On of my favourite walks is the Banagher Loop but I must give this one a go the next time. What distance was this walk?
Shane, I love the Banagher Loop and had intended to do it on this walk though ran out of time so it was a straight out and back of 24km. The walk to Mullaghmore along with the Banagher Loop is around 26km.

Gerry, do you use 1:50 scale maps or do you just use the phone? Curious question, see your camera footage of the last few videos, it's really improved. What have you changed? What is the camera you use? You're videos are getting more like mini documentaries. By far the best outdoors channel I've watched! Definitely deserve way more subs mate. Hopefully you get them.
I use Outdoor Active which has 1:50 for all of Ireland and also 1:25 for parts of NI. Would have only used map and compass in the past before discovering the apps and they haven't let me down yet, though have to make sure take power bank to keep phone charged. Do occasionally take the map and practice compass skills😊 Been using the same cameras for a couple of years now - Gopro Hero 9 for talking and a Panasonic Lumix for all the other shots. Everyone has developed their own style which is different from others and I think this is cool as not everyone is putting out the same stuff. I really enjoy doing the vids and telling people about where I am and the experience I am having and that is the important bit😊
@@gerrymcveigh aye, I'm noticing that. I'm really digging your way. Good work mate. I am gonna give the wee app a go. I remember you sharing a route with me a while ago (different UA-cam account). I still used the paper map though 😂I'm worried the thing lets me down and the cloud rolls in. But look, if you've been up and it's not happened as of yet, then I will give it a go. A girl I watch from Wales dropped her phone in-between rocks and that was the end of that! So I suppose anything can happen.
Probably good to always carry a map, easy to become complacent😊
