Really appreciate someone actually reviewing the 12R. It really is push forward development at a really competitive price. Hopefully the North American market show this phone some love.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Hey Juan -- I heard you asking about doing speech-to-text on Smartwatch on your SGGQA today. You can definitely do it on a Samsung. I have a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro... all you have to do is swipe up on the keyboard when first composing the messages. Once in the conversation you just click on the microphone icon and select speech-to-text instead of voice message recording.
Oneplus phones have extremely bad security, everyone that has one has seen signs of hacking, particularly bot hacking for social media accounts. Chinese phone makers are heavily compromised either by state intelligence (much like Western Hardware) or Hackers (unlike majority of Western Hardware). However because of the extremely over priced nature of Western Hardware, working class people will see these phones as a good alternative and probably by them based on hardware performance, having no idea how compromised they are.
This is my first reply to a UA-cam video ever in my history of being on UA-cam, and I've watched a lot in these past 16 years of having an account. But for some reason I feel compelled to leave a reply now. It's probably your genuine, knowledgeable and enthusiastic approach to this review. I'm a researcher at heart and can easily spend months finding out what's out there before making a decision. You just made it easy for me. Thanks Juan, this just saved me a considerable amount of time.
Thanks for covering this phone! Cheaper phones tend to get way less attention but they offer a shitload more value for people who aren't necessarily gonna fully utilise the more expensive camera specs and such.
My 12 is supposed to be delivered today. If you had told me that the 8 Gen 2 was going in a brand new phone this year man I would have had a harder time between 12 and 12 R
Excited to try it out. Trading in my flip 5. I just can't use a foldable without being paranoid that it'll break. One plus was giving $500 so pretty much break even.
OnePlus is really hitting their stride. I wish they made a smaller form factor phone. I loved the old OnePlus X back in the day. Great review as always !
In Sweden you only get the 16/256GB version. In USA you pay $599.99 for the 256GB version. Add to that the sales tax, so e.g. in California you will actually pay $643.49 (6 670 SEK). Still a lot cheaper though.
Here in the Netherlands the 16/256 model of the 12R costs around € 600, so that's quite comparable. The 'normal' 12 is around € 800 for the 12/256 model and around € 900 for the 16/512 model. I think the 12R is the best value for money here. In day to day use you'll hardly notice the speed difference between the 8 gen 2 and gen 3, the extra screen resolution is overkill i.m.o. I don't take a lot of 'serious' pictures with my phone (mostly bar shots) and I don't give a shit about wireless charging. So, I don't think it's worth the extra 200 Euros
Try getting this spec features on a device marketed in NA from our Samsungs, Apple’s, Pixels, etc the one plus 12 feature list is insane. I just switched to the one plus 12 24gb/1tb model and happily waiting for the order to come in and get off the Apple train forever. 😂
Just a heads up. The 12 seems to be getting the day one update in Europe now. The US should be receiving it soon and I would assume that goes for the 12R as well.

Thank you for speaking the facts. Most people will never utilize the A16 or A17 Pro chip on their iPongs to the maximum anyways. Buying a S8G2 phone is overkill future-proofing in itself seeing as many average consumers upgrade their phones every 2-3 years anyways.
I didn't even consider buying the 12R before this video. Now, it's on my shortlist for a new device when the price drops a bit (it's 100€ more expensive than the 11 here). Thanks, for your videos, I really appreciate the honesty!!!

Nice video. Love your insights on mobile processors and marketing. I have a Realme 11 pro+ from last year, with a Dimensity 7050. Love the design of the phone, the "flagship" main sensor, the battery life. For my performance needs, 7050 is more than enough and I think the 2 performance cores + 6 efficiency cores combo is underrated. I think you get the power most users need with the addition of boosted efficiency for the vast majority of every day tasks. Bought it for 450 euros. Thanks again for the content and the insights!
I had a OnePlus 7 Pro and loved it until I fell on it with the phone in my back pocket. I bought a OnePlus 8 but was completely dissatisfied with the camera, so I switched to a Pixel 6 Pro. I've been using that ever since, but I think it's time for me to jump into the OnePlus 12 and get a good deal before the 13 comes out. Welcome back, flagship killer! I thought you were lost forever.

Great video as always. Although for some reason I had to switch to the desktop version of the Firefox app to get voice typing to work. So I'm going to use this comment to troubleshoot it. You can ignore this. Just need a small sample size to diagnose the problem. Okay that's good enough be well.
you know, my issue is that the back panel of the regular Oneplus 12 feels like very thin paper. i ordered one but i sent it back right away after feeling that. the cheaper a phone, the more willing i am to accept that.
A friend's mom is travelling to the US on March. My friend wants to ask her for a phone so I thought exactly about the 12R or the 7a, and it's really a "better photos vs everything else" scenario! Maybe adding better software support to the 7a side. It's only two advantages, but relatively big ones!
OnePlus said last year when presenting the 11 that they're going back to roots and focusing on their quality which is why they dropped a 'Pro' version and that the flagship version will be the entry version
Juan I wish you had the moto edge 2023. To compare to this model. I picked one up and the storage of 512 standard with UFS 4.0 and stock AOSP UI , decent added moto features ...Battery 5100 mah it is giving me up to 3 days medium use and 2 days easy of absolute heavy use. My first charge I grabbed 14 hours and 20 left over 2 days. This is a smooth and very clean phone. 8 gen 2 I'm sure is the benefit but Motorola using light software surely helps. I cannot complain as the cameras usually are my upgrade reason but daily 2 phones these days and still use s22 for general but this moto edge plus is actually quite surprising my friend !!!! We shall see if we get those updates but unlockable bootloader is a bit of a Tylenol for that day I need Android 17 lol. 17:39
Hy Juan ,what phone can you recomand between Xiaomi 13 T pro,One plus 12 R and Motorola edge 40 pro? I m interested about display sound soft and camera. Regards
The Thinkphone, Oneplus 11 & 12rs are all really compelling for dual nano sim phones in the US. I ended up going with the Thinkphone just for the neat ThinkPad connectivity etc. Plus a dual nano sim is nice so I don't have to carry 2 phones lol😂.
Mr.Bagnell just doing Real work as usual fantastic review I always love your thoughts and opinions on tech man. : quick question is there a night mode for video on the OnePlus 12 ? I know on the 11 and 10 pro if you turned on the AI setting during night mode it really improved video quality but that AI setting is gone on the camera settings on the 12. Anything I can do to get night mode on video?
So, it seems that's not on these new phones. I know on the 9 pro, the main hook was using that 2MP sensor as a way to boost light for 1080p video, but tech "reviewers" panned it as "useless". I don't know if there will be a new AI mode to replace that.
As a 12r user, I'm satisfied a lot It's up upgrade for my over my realme x2pro and that was a legend in it's own time (even still is comparing with others in terms of efficiency and performance) Anyone having doubts about green line, only 1 user (op12, not 12r) has surfaced and even then, there's no solid proof to suggest it was not human error It's not an upgrade over op11 tho, or even 11r, but it is over all pre-11 series phones
The 12 has a more distinct pulse, the 12R has that older style which makes the phone feel hollow, or like the typing is being done with a tiny woodblock.
I'd be happy if Google lowers the OS updates to 5 years to keep the price competitive. My 3a XL had no slowdowns in day-to-day operations until the last 3 months in its 5th year of use, at which time I upgraded to the 8. Super happy with the cameras.
I was thinking of getting the 12 but maybe the 12r is a better option. My one concern is does it have video out via the USBC? I like to display out to TVs and projectors and that is always a deal breaker for me. I wish it had support for a nexdock too. don't know if that would work... Anyone have any info on this?
I really just dont get it. All these reviewers talk SO MUCH about "avuraj conzumers", but then mostly only talk about phones that only about 10% of the market will buy. It's weird. Almost like that review style is a big fat lie...
I wish pricing was more equal throughout the world. This starts at $750 in my country, which puts it in flagship level price. But I'm happy with my Pixel 7 Pro though, which I got a few weeks ago for about $200 refurbished. *Also a point about the Tensor G2, it's really not bad. I know it had a lot of troubles when released, but now, especially on Android 14 it's smooth, powerful and doesn't heat up anymore. For everyday use browsing internet, streaming music, navigation etc. it's perfect. And those cameras, I think it's unnecessary to mention how amazing they are.
whatever you do, mayne - just continue being yourself i respect you because you're not a corporate shill you're making me have high hopes for the next generation of open if it can hold its own against this year's 'gamer' phones, i might just switch
Pixel 7 and 7a would have been great contenders, but the giant put off on the Pixels for me is the lack of 5g outside supported countries. These very countries, like here in the Philippines is where the 12R is actually marketed on, and oh boy, Pixel will hardly compete here when even entry grade phones are 5G ready.
The A54 or F23 FE could be smaller but it doesn't even matter bc they are considerably more uncomfortable than the OP 12R. There's still no way manufacturers thought bringing back flat edges was a good idea.
Many issues in 12R 1. Blue tooth is not real time with connected device. It is lagging 2. Screen cast is not working with many devices I would not advice people to buy. Nothing comparable with one plus 5 or 6 or 7.
Time to get rid of Apple/Samsung/Google executive accounting departments and let companies innovate and engineering departments design products that are cutting edge and coming to the market without delay. Who cares how much it’ll cost let the marketplace and consumers decide what they want. The marketplace will tell you faster then a executive department of it should die or last
I was looking at upgrading from my Oneplus 8 pro. But i was surprised most comparison websites have Oneplus 8 pro as the better phone, compared to Oneplus 12R. Am i missing something?
Great ! someone finally took a look at the Oneplus 11r . Yeah it would be $430 out the door including tax when using the $100 discount for any phone and condition . This is a great deal as long as you need the two other lens .
I just got this phone replacing my s7 edge. I wanna buy the s23 but they are still expensive here in my country. So far I'm satisfied with this phone 😊 amazing super fast charging and smooth performance.
Hey so im torn on which model to get. Im thinking about the 12R which would be easier on my wallet but would it be more worth it to save a bit more and get the regular 12?
It depends on what you want in a phone. The 12R has lesser specs but better battery life and just as good display, and the 12 has a better camera and latest Snapdragon chipset.
With phones harboring humongous displays, it might be best that manufacturers copy how smart launcher implements their user experience design. I'm talking about launchers.
That's why Samsung Dex is great. With all that power, Dex just extends the life of the phone. I still have my older Samsung phones running media dudies with the TVs around the house. Not having a desktop experience is a deal breaker.
I've gotta ask: Is that picture cutout feature actually that impressive? Since it can be done on samsungs and xiaomi devices running lower end processors.
Overall how is ur experience with 12R any heating issues , any charging issues ,any kind of lags,? Any chance green line may come in future...?? Planning to buy 12R since 12 is bit costly ...
Wife and I are getting this from the 8 and 8 pro. The batteries are going out on us and devices are starting to crash here and there so time for new ones! Yay consumerism
usually midrange phones have a bad micrphone. like my Nothing phone 1, it's camera quality is perfect but the microphone is really bad. is the microphone good on this one ?
If you have the oneplus 11, it doesn't make sense to get the 12r unless you want a bigger battery. Juan, I have a question. Does the 12r scroll choppy on UA-cam like the 11? Honestly, I don't expect you to respond even though it's a legitimate question. I don't blame oneplus if they don't care. Maybe UA-cam is not popular in Asia for them to give a darn. But you have to admit it is an issue on the 11. Is it b/c UA-cam is running on 60hz? I have an S23 fe. UA-cam runs like butter on it. Even Tensor 2 on the Pixel 7pro does a good job of keeping scrolling smooth on YT. Oneplus phones are great, but they need tweaking. Scrolling is stiff on oneplus.
This year, OP has improved that some yes. The scrolling will pin the screen refresh to 120Hz, but it still janks a little when it needs to get more videos from the internet. It's better though, that while playing a video at 30fps, if you scroll under the video, NOW OP will fire up the full refresh rate, even if you haven't selected the app to operate specifically in high refresh. You can leave it in auto now.
@@SomeGadgetGuy interesting. I just thought it was aggressive because of how big that camera module really is and how much space it takes on the back of the phone.
OnePlus just needs to get their act together and get OxygenOS 14 pushed out to the OnePlus Open. I don't understand why they're releasing sub $1,000 dollar phones already running 14 but leaving us that bought the $1,500 Open hanging out here waiting!
Another great excellent video to the point that I immediately looked it up on their website (UK) at £650 and no expandable memory or headphone jack has made me pause, there's a lot to like about the 12R but I would really like to not lose those particular features. Great Job as always Sir.

Great video as always. Although for some reason I had to switch to the desktop version of the Firefox app to get voice typing to work. So I'm going to use this comment to troubleshoot it. You can ignore this. Just need a small sample size to diagnose the problem. Okay that's good enough be well.
we salute you for standing up for our pockets...
Great review. I was going to buy 12R, but then I saw European pricing. We have to pay $770 💀
Even with tax included that's still over $100 more.
OnePlus 12R is mostly likely going to be my next phone.
It's such a punchy option. Great price to performance.
you know, my issue is that the back panel of the regular Oneplus 12 feels like very thin paper.
i ordered one but i sent it back right away after feeling that.
the cheaper a phone, the more willing i am to accept that.
A friend's mom is travelling to the US on March. My friend wants to ask her for a phone so I thought exactly about the 12R or the 7a, and it's really a "better photos vs everything else" scenario! Maybe adding better software support to the 7a side. It's only two advantages, but relatively big ones!
Who said the 12R is gonna take worse photos? IMX 890 is a better sensor than the one found in the Pixel 7A.
@@Arkhalizard but that Google post processing tho
@@GerardinhoLP OnePlus post processing isn't much further behind, trust me, I've seen enough sample shots on the internet.
378 bucks open box with charger 68w. Insanity.
Just got it myself and I love it so far. Not going back to my iPhone 15 plus
As a 12r user, I'm satisfied a lot
It's up upgrade for my over my realme x2pro and that was a legend in it's own time (even still is comparing with others in terms of efficiency and performance)
Anyone having doubts about green line, only 1 user (op12, not 12r) has surfaced and even then, there's no solid proof to suggest it was not human error
It's not an upgrade over op11 tho, or even 11r, but it is over all pre-11 series phones
@SomeGadgetguy .. what do u think of the haptic feedback when u compare to the 12 ?? Is it priscise??
The 12 has a more distinct pulse, the 12R has that older style which makes the phone feel hollow, or like the typing is being done with a tiny woodblock.
@@SomeGadgetGuy cool.. that's what I wanted to know .. I like a good haptic motor.. should be pricise
I'd be happy if Google lowers the OS updates to 5 years to keep the price competitive. My 3a XL had no slowdowns in day-to-day operations until the last 3 months in its 5th year of use, at which time I upgraded to the 8. Super happy with the cameras.
I'm starting to feel like I should recommend more of my friends wait out until we see how companies will bring back easily replaceable batteries...
Nice to see this review of the OnePlus 12R!
I was thinking of getting the 12 but maybe the 12r is a better option. My one concern is does it have video out via the USBC? I like to display out to TVs and projectors and that is always a deal breaker for me. I wish it had support for a nexdock too. don't know if that would work... Anyone have any info on this?
Nope. No video out. Just like the OP11. The OP12 brought it back.
@@SomeGadgetGuy thank you!!! Made my decision.
I gotchu fam
I got the OnePlus 8 and i upgrade 2 oneplus 12R. I hope i liket when inget it home
I'm doing the same, are you happy with the upgrade?
@@4K6VR om loving it so far.
OnePlus is really pushing the boundaries this year. Too bad "big tech UA-camrs" ignored it this year. Thank you for the video
I really just dont get it. All these reviewers talk SO MUCH about "avuraj conzumers", but then mostly only talk about phones that only about 10% of the market will buy. It's weird. Almost like that review style is a big fat lie...
@@SomeGadgetGuy Well said, brother. It absolutely IS a big fat lie unfortunately.
Juan can you do a video or a short on the x100 since you loved the x80 so much. Thinking of upgrading
ua-cam.com/video/Y-WW0tVFmsk/v-deo.html
whatever you do, mayne - just continue being yourself
i respect you because you're not a corporate shill
you're making me have high hopes for the next generation of open
if it can hold its own against this year's 'gamer' phones, i might just switch
Great video, Still loving my Oneplus 11
It feels nice that hte OP11 isn't really left behind in this strategy.
Yeah that regional regulatory stuff is messy, and Google REALLY isn't good at playing that game. See also, fitbit leaving a lot of regions.
The A54 or F23 FE could be smaller but it doesn't even matter bc they are considerably more uncomfortable than the OP 12R. There's still no way manufacturers thought bringing back flat edges was a good idea.
The problem for the UK supplied OnePlus 12R for me or those who travel a lot abroad are the lack of eSim and Band LTE Band 71 for travel to the US
It has eSIM
@@human_hope No mention about eSim on GSM Arena and on OnePlus UK website .
You may be right though.
@@bengoey weird because it mentions eSIM on oneplus Canada website
@@human_hope Probably different specs for US/Canada
Yes can use a esim
7:30 any chance you might label which is main and which is macro in the future?
Scoping out potential upgrades for my soon to be s21 ultra. I feel like I'm going to miss that 100x zoom.
I heard that curved phones are prone to get damages easily. Does this apply to this phone aswell?
excited to get this phone. I am upgrading from the oneplus 8 so should be great. Picked up the genshin edition
This is literally costing me the same amount as my OnePlus 6t did 5 years ago....i say thats a pretty nice deal for an upgrade in every category
Many issues in 12R
1. Blue tooth is not real time with connected device. It is lagging
2. Screen cast is not working with many devices
I would not advice people to buy. Nothing comparable with one plus 5 or 6 or 7.
The AI tool works on oneplus 9 pro too pretty cool to see new features added to an older model
Oh snap. I haven't tried that yet!
Moto edge plus 2023 vs over plus 12? What better??
Main advantage of A54 is SD card support
That is handy.
Time to get rid of Apple/Samsung/Google executive accounting departments and let companies innovate and engineering departments design products that are cutting edge and coming to the market without delay. Who cares how much it’ll cost let the marketplace and consumers decide what they want. The marketplace will tell you faster then a executive department of it should die or last
Which is better- the Oneplus 12r or the Thinkphone? Coming from an older Samsung with a Samsung watch.
Hands down best value per dollar. Picking one up soon
I just got this phone replacing my s7 edge. I wanna buy the s23 but they are still expensive here in my country. So far I'm satisfied with this phone 😊 amazing super fast charging and smooth performance.
u r a pro, bruh ! nice review.
I am finally moving off of my oneplus 7 pro to get the 12R. Expect similat stellar performance and worry free use for years.
Did you get it ?
If yes, how is the experience??
With phones harboring humongous displays, it might be best that manufacturers copy how smart launcher implements their user experience design. I'm talking about launchers.
Mine is coming the 14th... can't wait...
im probably upgrading from a oneplus 8t to this i thinks its a solid upgrade
That's why Samsung Dex is great. With all that power, Dex just extends the life of the phone. I still have my older Samsung phones running media dudies with the TVs around the house.
Not having a desktop experience is a deal breaker.
I wish more folks would really give it a shot. I know PLENTY of people who's whole computing needs could be easily covered by an S10.
No shop that will do a battery replacement?
usually midrange phones have a bad micrphone.
like my Nothing phone 1, it's camera quality is perfect but the microphone is really bad.
is the microphone good on this one ?
Oxygen OS 14 includes an option to force apps to run at 120Hz, but it's unclear how well it works.
@@ayouboughar4673 can you expand on that? I'm interested.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Thanks for taking the time to reply. Much appreciated. 👍🏾
Figured out how to get UA-cam to run at 120hz. It's smooth as a baby's bottom.
I'm still using my OP 8T, but this is pretty tempting. I've been thinking about upgrading too.
8T to this would be a nice little upgrade...
does it have mhl compatability
Does the 12R have video out on the USBC like the 12?
No, just USB-C 2.0.
That camera module is very agressive.
It's a clever design tweak. OP is now using the camera ridge as additional space to include antennas.
@@SomeGadgetGuy interesting. I just thought it was aggressive because of how big that camera module really is and how much space it takes on the back of the phone.
Well, you can see THOSE differences comparing the 12R to the 12, ALL of THOSE sensors got bigger, and that camera module is even beefier.
@@SomeGadgetGuy That is true. They have a similar design in the OP11.
OnePlus just needs to get their act together and get OxygenOS 14 pushed out to the OnePlus Open. I don't understand why they're releasing sub $1,000 dollar phones already running 14 but leaving us that bought the $1,500 Open hanging out here waiting!
Credit Oppo/One plus, they brought the game here in a big way. They opened up allot of eyes
Another great excellent video to the point that I immediately looked it up on their website (UK) at £650 and no expandable memory or headphone jack has made me pause, there's a lot to like about the 12R but I would really like to not lose those particular features. Great Job as always Sir.
Fewer and fewer options left to vote with your wallet there.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Well just gonna sit tight for the moment and see what this year brings, please keep on doing what you do, it's truly appreciated
How many years is OnePlus offering OS updates?
3 years os,4 security
Quite enough
OnePlus is taking over early 2024
Thank you for being honest about the one plus 12R
