@@supaahflyy I have both a McLaren spider and Lamborghini performante spider. the Lamborghini is more fun to drive because of the noise and sound even though it is slower in a straight line. I actually loved my Lamborghini V12 Super Volace. I have never driven a Ferrari I kind of have a bias against them I think they overpriced that car is kind of like Richard Mille. Audemars piguet reminds me of Lamborghini. And Ferrari remind me of Richard Mille they put a premium on the price when they shouldn't
F1 has spoiled these things for me because you learn just how much a track can favor one design type over another. With that said though, this is also one of the few videos that makes all that irrelevant because Oliver's analysis is spot on and very detailed. He's also blisteringly fast so it's fun to watch him through these things around. You know for a fact that the assessment of both cars is dead accurate. Thanks for the vid.
Mclaren actually does offer an option for Pirelli Trofeo R tires which are a lot more equivalent to the Michelin cup 2s. Fair fight would have been using the Trofeo Rs. Either way fantastic video!
Love the Pista, but i think the winner is the 720s. 0.8s aprox for a road version vs the track focused Ferrari is insane! Great driving and review from the driver.
That doesn’t matter because the 488 GTB competed with the 650S...these are the successors of the MP4-12C and 458 Italia that competed against each other... The logical competitor for the 488 Pista would actually be the 675LT. But McLaren released it too early. The 720S competes with the F8 Tributo. Their track versions will compete too.
@@projectr2451 The fact is that MCLaren has released a new model when Ferrari was making a hardcore version of the 488. Same happened when Ferrari came with the 488, MCLaren was focused on the 675 LT. These cars are being released on different intervals of time. Same happened with Lamborghini with Gallardo Superlegerra and Ferrari 430, then Gallardo LP560-4 with 430 Scuderia. So we'll probably see a McLaren 750LT vs Ferrari Tributo comparison, which is stupid I admit, same as Pista against 720S (base model vs hardcore one).
Lionel Dherine That’s my point. McLaren are releasing cars too quick. Porsche, Lamborghini and Ferrari seem to be in line with each other. The 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 competes with the 2009 Ferrari 458 Italia and Porsche 911 Turbo (997), the 2014 Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 competes with the 2015 Ferrari 488 GTB and Porsche 911 Turbo S (991), and the 2019 Lamborghini Huracán LP640-4 Evo competes with the 2019 Ferrari F8 Tributo and will compete with the 911 Turbo (992). If we look at their track versions, we can see that Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche have managed to release their track versions before one releases their next. Example, the 2012 Porsche 911 GT2 RS (997.2) and 2013 Ferrari 458 Speciale came before Lamborghini released the 2014 Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4. Just like how the 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991.2) and 2018 Ferrari 488 Pista released before Lamborghini released their 2019 Huracán LP640-4 Evo. Same way their track versions are released after all road versions are released. The 911 Turbo S (991.1 & 991.2) and 488 GTB released before the Huracán LP640-4 Performante released. The 911 Turbo S (997) and 458 Italia released before the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera released. You see my point?
@@projectr2451 Yeah sure. But the fact is that people use power as comparison, and that's all. They just miss the fact that both cars can have the same amount of horsepower, but being designed for different purposes. For example the 720S isn't meant to be track focused, compared to the 488 Pista. Same power but different paths. This is the mistake journalists usually make during car comparisons. But Lamborghini started with the Performante on the Ring, so Porsche had to find something quickly and they simply jumped into the GT2 RS instead of the regular GT2. So I assume this is purely competitive and not planned from Porsche. The Evo on the other hand is a street version, they'll probably build a more focused one in a few years and McLaren will probably have replaced the 570S, which will go against that Lambo because they have a comparable amount of power. You see my point ?
Lionel Dherine I see your point definitely, and it’s true. Because a lot of people did compare the 458 Italia to the Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera rather than the Gallardo LP560-4, because both had 570hp and 398lb-ft of torque, and also because the 458 Italia was just a much better all round performance car than the Gallardo LP560-4.
Wow Pista sounds a lot more angry and frenetic than the 720S .....that being said how can anyone not say the 720 is the real winner here?! It came within a half second of the Ferrari without the advantage of its much less aggressive tires, that’s insane. Mclaren 720 really is the best 👍🏻
Excuses excuses.... the 720s was treated on track tyres by Motorsport Magazine and came in 2 seconds slower than the Pista at Magny Cours. Cut the crap!
The highest technological level is expressed in formula 1, same specifications, same tires, same weight. The numbers tell us that the only car manufacturer capable of staying ahead of a Ferrari is Mercedes. In formula 1 Mclaren is not able to build an engine while ferrari has the most powerful. Honestly, Ferrari is on another level.
It's not because you can built the best V8 twin turbo that you are able to build the best aspirated V6 for example. What you say is not really true. A simple change of rules in F1 can totally change the whole hierarchy between constructors, doesn't mean that the regular cars made from those constructors have changed herarchy. Not even mentioning that the hierarchy can change depending on the track (Ferrari can be faster in Monza, slower in Monaco....). You want to extremely simplify something much more complex. The gt2 rs destroys both those cars on track while having less horse power, doesn't mean Porsche would be better than Ferrari in F1.
John Mitchell the F8 is just a Pista with more comfort it won’t be as fast. The SF90 is the near 1000hp one but that’s not a rival for this it’s the next model up.
If this was drag times, the 720s would have won by 3 seconds. He just wouldn’t have told you that the Ferrari had a normal driver while the Mclaren had a veteran.
U can’t compare 2 cars only on the straight. If a car win on the straight it doesn’t mean that this car is good in the circuits. You have to look at other things, and not only drag race time
The track focus 720s is already out and its called the Senna. Honestly what is McLaren going to do. They are going to have the 720s LT and the Senna which are going to be so close together. If i was a senna owner I would be pissed.
The less number of years that took McLaren to get to this level and give car manufacturers like ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche hard times makes it a little bit superior and majestic for me. But I love all Japanese and European supercars.
svtrader Better power to weight ratio. Just to correct and make the point that it’s not just power. But you are right. And the Pista has more downforce too. But just had to make that point because the Aventador LP770-4 Superveloce Jota has more power than the 911 GT2 RS (991.2) and 488 Pista, and will still get beat by both.
Damn that was a good race! I’m taking the McLaren 720S. I like its design, creativity and innovation. Like with the head lights how they are air intakes as well, the cool air vents on the side of the doors that are in between the doors, the cool doors when their up, the McLaren is more Me. The interior also! I love how the driver screen folds up and down like that depending on what mode your in. I think I’ll take the McLaren 720S.
I'm really surprised the 720S is that close. I didn't think it was really supposed to put down that fast of lap times. Everything I've heard says it's so much more comfortable and a much better daily driver.
It's hilarious that people are so mad that ferrari 488 pista is fast and find excuses for the 720s which was the best McLaren in their mind and they can't accept it. tHe 720 is not even track focused bla bla come on its a damn supercar with crazy technology and stop pretending comparison wasnt fair
Demshiro San the only reason it wasn’t fair is because of the tires. 720s can be specced with track focused Trofeo Rs. This car was running on street tire corsas. The Trofeo Rs are not even as grippy as the Cup2 Rs. But even if you just went with the optional Trofeo Rs the 720s would be 1-2 seconds faster.
Would like to know what kind of tires on both cars. Also the Ferrari is actually named Pista so...but well done by Oliver and enjoyed his explanation of lap
hassi1975 @ they both have Corsas , watch the other video from motorsport magazine, where the pista had track tyres, wrecked the McLaren with 4 sec😂 only 2s slower then the senna
Cup2 tyres are just slightly better and they both are track tyres. Mclaren has a partnership with Pirellivm and it has perfected the cars to fit Pirelli tires, not Michelin. So a Mclaren is not meant to have Michelin tires

It should, but the 488 is so outgunned by the 720S the track focused Pista is ultimately a better comparison. ewhen Mclaren release the 750LT it will be like taking candy from a Pista baby ;)
You say that but we felt they were direct rivals and having had both cars on track days and tours this year we really wanted to know how they would fair head to head
12C vs 458 Italia - 1st gen 650S vs 488 GTB - 2nd gen 720S vs F8 Tributo - 3rd gen This is how McLaren and Ferrari match up. You feel like 488 gtb vs 720s are rivals because McLaren releases their cars quickly - that is one reason why McLarens tend to depreciate more.

Ferrari 👑
Great to see these two go head to head!! Thanks for the video!!
Our pleasure Jessica! Thanks for watching
The Ferrari is 8/10th of a second faster. Very impressive to nearly beat a 720s by nearly 1 second. I didn't expect the gap to be so wide.
We already know that Pista is fast. My question is, what tires were used on the vehicles? If you don't have the Trofeo R in the 720s, this is a great lap time. Because Pista has a Cup 2 R.
How do you know about the Cup2 R? Isn't it just a Cup 2?
The Standard pista is on cup2 which are maybe 2 tenth quicker then the corsas/ for comparison the gt2rs uses the same tyres like the pista

I got a tesla about 2 years ago and even though its quick as ill ever need a car to be on the road, you feel like its missing something because you cant hear the noise of the engine. Should have gotten a Fiat Panda.
You know for a fact that the assessment of both cars is dead accurate.

what about both car tyres ?
radiowawa the 720S doesn’t come OEM with track focused tyres (trofeo R for eg) so I’m also interested to know what tyres both cars have.
Both factory fit tyres - 720S P Zero Corsa and Michelin Cup 2
Mclaren actually does offer an option for Pirelli Trofeo R tires which are a lot more equivalent to the Michelin cup 2s. Fair fight would have been using the Trofeo Rs. Either way fantastic video!
@@tegoautomotiveproducts5222 ok put the ferrari then the lighter carbon rims
"just over half second", actually is 0.7s, seven tenths...it's a big difference
Love the Pista, but i think the winner is the 720s. 0.8s aprox for a road version vs the track focused Ferrari is insane! Great driving and review from the driver.
Can't wait to see what the 750LT does. Keep in mind lads the posts is Ferrari's track specced 488gtb. The 720s' track specced car is coming next yr
Lionel Dherine
That’s my point.
Lionel Dherine
I see your point definitely, and it’s true.

Don't forget the 720s is 2 years older and not really meant for the track.
@@ShadowGodOfDarkness There is no McLaren that is not given track treatment not even the McLaren GT
@@kushcactushouse3821 not to the extent of the pista. But you have a point.
Excuses excuses.... the 720s was treated on track tyres by Motorsport Magazine and came in 2 seconds slower than the Pista at Magny Cours. Cut the crap!
Calm down lady, 720 lost. Not a big deal. Stop making excuses.
A track focused Ferrari and only 0.5s in it on a road focused McLaren. The 750LT tack variant of that will absolutely murder around a track 😍
John Mitchell the F8 is just a Pista with more comfort it won’t be as fast. The SF90 is the near 1000hp one but that’s not a rival for this it’s the next model up.
John Mitchell well that’s definitely not a compatible car to these. That’s Senna and above level. The 720 is a 488 rival.
Motor Recon don’t forget top gear track it killed the 720s and other tracks it went a lot faster . 750LT vs F8 tributo track version , won’t matter.

488 Pista should be compared with 675 LT
Given that the 720 is ‘old’ and the pista is new and track focused - maclaren should be happy with that
It's hilarious that people are so mad that ferrari 488 pista is fast and find excuses for the 720s which was the best McLaren in their mind and they can't accept it. tHe 720 is not even track focused bla bla come on its a damn supercar with crazy technology and stop pretending comparison wasnt fair
It's insane that a standard 720S can compete against a track focust, more expensive car. INSANE
