I have the A6400 ... it's setup as you described in the video. It is absolutely amazing how well it tracks faces and eyes. I also tested the animal eye detection on our cats. The results? The best pictures of our cats I have ever taken. The autofocus technology in the A6400 is spectacular.
Thank you for being thorough and straight to the point. Went through several videos that only talked about the feature. This actually showed me how to turn it on.
Marvelous - I messed for ages with the manual but still wasn’t convinced I had it set up properly. A few minutes with your video showed I’d not understood. All sorted now. Fantastic.
Happy to help! Enjoy the camera!
Thank you both, Chris & Jordan. So clear and so useful. I’ve avoided using AF whilst filming but now feel more comfortable about using it (on my A7R3). Keep up the good work!
Thanks guys. I am using a Sony A9ll this weekend for an event and I'm learning the focusing choices. Coming from a Canon where I had everything on manual, this is a whole new world.
Omg, I have been using my a6400 wrong this whole time. Thank you! Love your videos, allways straight on point.
Great video! Crazy: I've struggled with focus control ever since I upgraded from an old a6000 to a new a6100. You helped me in passing by teaching me that "spot focus" is now controlled by touching the screen! I didn't even know that was possible since my old camera had a special 'spot focus' feature that was accessed by touching buttons instead... never know when you're helping someone out by including 'baby steps' in your video script and I can't thank you enough!
Best,
Matt
I learned more in your one video than I did from a whole array of other channels. I now subscribe and thank you for your content.
Thank you so much. I was struggling to set the eye autofocus on the A6400. So easy now. It's fantastic. Looks like magic.
This took me forever to find when I first got my a6400. Awesome education !!!
Thank you, for an excellent, short refresher. Merry Christmas
❤❤ wow you’re the best in explaining into details!!! Thank you so much for your help with everything I needed to know about this camera! I have one and was wondering how to use it! Now I know thanks to you for this video!
Coming from a Nikon Z to a Sony a7RIV, this video was perfect timing. Thanks. Very helpful for people switching over. The Sony AF runs circles around the Z's.
Only reason I got Sony! Still hate their ergonomics but some things are more impt
@@TheLostKuma I think the ergonomics of the r4 is much better than previous R models and much better than the Nikon Z7 I had. Plenty of customizable buttons to really take advantage of the focus capabilities of the r4.
@@yervantparnagian5999 No, I agree, it's getting better with every version (been on the a7r train since the ii), but its still not nearly as nice to hold or use as a canon R or gfx or s1. i find the z7 much more comfortable to hold/handle as well. (and not just the physical ergos the darn menus....)
Thanks so much! I couldn't figure out where the tracking wide or tracking zone was located. Now I just need to learn how to use it when I'm taking an actual photos of a bird in flight!
S1H footage looks much more cinematic. Nice, Jordan!
I thought it was just my imagination... but glad someone else agrees.
Fantastic video. So clear and concise.
Thank you so much for breaking this down.
thanks for this video. straight to the point. and very informative.
That was awesome, thank you guys. I think I'm going to buy a sony...
Thank you for sharing, very useful.
Real useful information thanks. I'm seeing the original Sony A9 for £2100 now itll be a great buy at that price. That or the new Sony A6600 with the Sigma trio.
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to figure out the best settings for video shooting for close moving objects. I'm shooting craft videos and have the camera in 45deg. The issue is that the focus keep pulsing trying to track my hands moving. Any suggestion?
Very well explained, thank you very much. Quick question: is there a difference in AF tracking for photos between an a7iii or an a6600? I keep hearing in some reviews that the tracking is not present in the a7iii but in other videos they say that it is only the video object tracking that is not present in the a7iii.
Thank‘s a lot very easy and good explanation :)
As a noob, I soo love this help, thank you! It would be an added benefit if you showed a few blurry pics and the settings that could have corrected them. I have a few hundred 😭 to offer if you need examples.
You really need to try this feature out to believe it. No more AF modes/zones/types. Just "focus recompose" in continuous autofocus with seamless face, eye, and subject tracking!
It's not even recompose... Just focus and compose lol.
Minor correction: at 4:40 you suggest setting a custom button to switch between human and animal faces, but the menu feed shows the C1 button set to "Face/Eye Priority in AF". What it should be set to is the next option "Subject Detection" instead. Personally I have mine set to the top-left setting in the Fn menu since I use it often but not as often as my C1/C2 shortcuts.
You are right.
There's a mention at 4:30 about switching between human and animal eye detect by assigning "Face/Eye Priority in AF" to a custom button. However, I think that just turns Face/Eye AF on and off and that the correct option to assign to the custom button is "Subject Detection". Great video 'though!
Very helpful. Thanks. 🙂
thank you so much for this video
Thanks Chris and Jordan. This helped massively. Any tips on the AF Tracking Sensitivity modes? I'm trying to configure the R4 for the best possible vlogging settings.
normal usually works best :)
I started the video around minute 2:00 by mistake (sausage fingers and smartphones are not good friends) and I thought "Geez, these guys are using the Leica SL2 for video". So I went to the beggining of the video and saw the S1H, which has the same sensor. Beautiful colours, great video quality, something I noticed in the Leica preview as well.
the more I use this 📷 the more I 👍 it. The a6600 feels very robust and comfortable in your hands.
WOW thanks a lot for this tutorial. Can you please tell if A7 III has this feature for photos? I hope it does...
Very helpful.
very helpful, Justin made me laugh. Thanks
Pretty interesting video! Did you use autofocus with S1H? Thanks! :-)
Could you please do something similar for the Fujifilm X-T30!?
I kept being distracted by you filming in Calgary!
Thanks very helpful - Does this apply to video as well.
Great straight to the point video
Thanks for the info. How can I tell Sony I really, really want them to add software so I can make 4-6 multiple exposures?
I saw in some other videos YT that you have to turn off face/ eye AF and set it to Ael button that way you can capture an object even when there's face and eyes to focus but how did you lock focus on the camera he was holding with it af face tracking is on?
Is the tracking speed still works if You are using af tracking in video?
Hi, I have the sony RX100 V11. When selecting the focus area by following your direction I do not have the option for Tracking Wide, the last option on this list is Tracking Flexible Spot S or there is an earlier option of just Wide, which option should I use, is it the Tracking Flexible Spot S?
3:57-4:08 Priceless acting from Jordan.
Jordan is comedy gold
i have A7s3, i will put camera into marine housing to shoot swimming fishes or moving subject, i need subject AF tracking, no touching screen acessible, according to your explanation, focus area/tracking wide(a tiny button icon), not appear in video mode only in photo mode, it's very easy on touch screen, just touch it, it will focus tracking, but, in housing, no~! i ask around, nobody know how to trigger the tracking AF function with button., can you tell me how to do it? thanks
So are these directions applicable to the A7III?
It will not let me choose tracking wide under manual exposure in movie mode. Any work around for this????
your talent is funniest people
Sorry, I must have missed something. How do you turn "Real-Time Tracking" on? How does it differ from AF-C + (One of the tracking modes) + Face/Eye Detect? And I don't recall it being emphasized ANYWHERE in the video that you need to turn Face/Eye detect ON. At the end we're shown how to change from Human to Animal, but unless we start out in Full Auto Face/Eye detect won't be on. My questions were precisely what Chris articulated at the beginning of the video but I never got an answer.
How do I turn general (not eye AF) tracking for movies? Cant find this option anywhere in the menus/manual.
Wow that demo where he away from the camera and turned back to it and it snapped on to his eye legit instantly is insane
Yes, Olympus had that 3 years ago. It is amazing how people don't know what is out there available to them.
@@paristo ok I know we are all photo people here but imagine shooting with Olympus LOL
@@danielburgos3817 It acts same, and even better many ways than Sony. That is the difference.
And that ain't about beign fan or anything, just that people do not know how to handle cameras and what a different cameras does really when they ain't media sexy.
That is the amazing part. Like someone wrote a opinion in famous newspaper that Olympus sells its camera division and everyone jumps on that. But when they do something pioneering, they just get "meh" until a more hyped company does the same and UA-cam goes crazy.
You can't win in such competition where others are ignored by beign years ahead with same or even better performance!
Because these people do not really have time to learn the different gears functions.
But hey, people love so much Sony how advanced it is for them, after like 10 years old $500 DSLR!
@@paristo Olympus does not have this feature whatsoever. Why the random nonsense?
ALSO make sure "function of touch operation" is set to "touch tracking" and not the default "touch focus"
Thanks for the video! Hwy Jordan: how did you mic up Chris and was the S1H on sticks the whole shoot? Or is the IBIS that amazing???
This was all shot on sticks. Chris is wearing a Deity lav under his jacket (you can see the fur in a few shots).
@@thatjordandrake Thanks. Thought it was chest hair trying to break free :)
"This episode was shot on the Panasonic S1H" ...is it happened? Is it finally happened?! Did Jordan really cheated on his GH5?!
I'll be shooting a few episodes on it, leading up to our full review.

the A9 ii ?
Great video and commentary as usual. I’m choosing my first camera and leaning towards the g85 for it’s all weather seal.
That camera is using the outdated micro four thirds format. Pretty much a dead system because of its substantially inferior image quality compared to full frame and aps-c.
Elio Marino sony’s APS-C line are superior in every way. cant go wrong with sony. ive used sony since the a7 classic and never regretted it.
can someone help me? I have the A7Riii and for some reason i cant get face tracking to work when im shooting 4k, i tried putting the camera on airplane mode, its not digitally zooming and proxy recording is off.
Is it good for sports? I shoot basketball matches indoors
Still can't figure out what is the big deal with auto-focus on newer a6400 in compare with the older models?
Anyone could help?
As it seems, auto-focus works the same on all of them..
Is it just faster on a6400 and that's it or?
Such pretty eyes!
Are autofocus still work in vertical video?
Oh God! Thank you so much! Couldn't figure it out how to use it on my A7R IV!
Need help though how to get it working in video mode...
It’s bizarrely hidden. Under the “Function of Touch” menu option, set it to “Tracking”. Then you can use the touch screen to initiate tracking in video mode.
Jordan @ DPReview TV
What happens, if you want to shoot more than one picture? Would it be best to use the AF-ON button for this technique?
I personally prefer AFON but we didnt want to make the video too complicated for new users. I recommend regardless of system that everyone get used to back button focusing personally.
You get a touchscreen? My A7ii doesn't and really makes me wish it did.
Does this "Real-Time' autofocus tracking available in A7RIII?
yes with a software update
I want to move from a6000 to a6600. do you think that is a worth change¿? i do photography, not video.
Well explained i see youtuvers having trouble with the af in sony. If you get a new camera just get to know it fir. Read the manual!!!!
I think you really missed an important and confusing point...you can set touch screen to "tracking" rather than focus. You also didn't mention or show the white tracking box that functions even when your finger is not on shutter release button.
Part II: Half press/touch options x af mode switching. ☺️
I have the a6600 and tracking is only available when I have it set to human, animal mode greys out all my tracking focus options...
Yeah, exactly the same problem. It doesn't make sense to me.
I have the Sony a7III do you have a video for that model?
It doesn't have full Real Time Tracking (just Real Time Eye AF), but it operates in a very similar way as in the video, just less efficiently. A7 III tracking is decent, but nowhere near as sticky as the newer cameras' Real Time Tracking.
Will it track in Video mode?
Please for video mode too
How to choose between left and right eye, when holding focus?
Wait the a7iii doesn’t have real time tracking? Just real time eye af? What’s the difference since they both focus on the person?
I remember when I was originally looking for a camera the man in the camera department was trying to talk me into a Sony. I remember his words you should try it you won't be disappointed. I wound up going with a Canon.
And you've regret it ever since.
Yes
I would have loved to watch an example where the animal tracking feature actually picks an animal being close to a human being - with both pair of eyes evenly lit.
Why does the camera switch out of tracking mode when animal eyeAF is selected?
I run into the same issue on my 6400
Which firmware version is this? I have 3.01 and tracking wide is not there on the a7iii
Unfortunately, real time tracking is not supported on the a7 III.
I use centre focus 95% of time. Auto area focus settings have too much of a mind of their own a lot of the time. Triggering on things that aren't the subject... dreadful. Just use centre focus area. Point camera at subject, then move camera compose shot whilst holding exposure button half down to hold focus. But I've found can't set centre area focus with camera in full auto !
Is there a way round this?
On Panasonic S1H you use little too small DOF. It looks strange in video. You look as on green screen with pasted background.
Is the DPReview page down? Can't seem to access it with any browser but it pings just fine...?!
Hmm, had a brief successful entrance to the main page but stopped working after that.
Things are back up and running now.
Hi everybody, somebody knows why the face and eye detection doesn't work in Sony a6600 shooting 24p 4k? I don't use external monitor
Does the A7 III have real time tracking?
No
Amazing how af technology has advanced. With my D5100 I used back button focus and only used the center point. Now I got X-T100 but since I only use adapted lenses I only have full manual focus. However the peaking and zoom make it so easy.
Janne Ranta yes and that the only thing they improve those years... meanwhile smartphones have every year a big jump in quality, dynamic range and iso performance... they need to wake up
@@denyxrunner It's not comparable imho since phones have a strict size restriction.
Janne Ranta yeah I know but they actually compete with some much bigger sensors thanks to the computation photography... if just camera companies wake up they could improve the image quality drastically
Hey Chris , 🤔 is this the S1H ???
You guys should stop pretending that you havent received it yet .
@@organismx Who's pretending? We say it was shot on the S1H in the intro.
What I don't understand is how you control focus through the EVF. I get no boxes or confirmation.
All the reviews are for the rear screen.
a6400 focus tracking doesnt work at 120fps record mode. does it?
It does turn in then it goes away in my A7siii
Not Available on A73?
I have an a7C but mines doesn't have Tracking: Wide as a choice.
Canon has been doing this exact same thing for years. Recognizing faces and locking on them, then seamlessly switching between subject tracking and face tracking. They weren't giving as much visual cues to what was happening within the algorithm though. Sony finally caught up to them, but improved it with a much more enjoyable user interface. It looked so simple on Canon, we took it for granted. Sony makes it feels almost like a game. You can always do it - Canon way - by clicking on the touchscreen to select, but Sony also gives you a crosshair (flexible spot) to target and lock on, which makes you feel like Tom Cruise in the Top Gun.
When will you do a nikon z50 review?
This video is nearly two years old and Nikon still hasn't caught up to this system. To someone who loves his D850 this is such a frustrating situation.
FUJI PLEASEEEEEEEEE
in 4k video eye tracking is forbiden on my zv1
I just cannot believe you said "disgusting human" , I just can't!!!
You got it all wrong...
You're taking it way too seriously....
...disgusting human you. ;P
Thanks for epilepsy warning at the 55 second mark. Jebus.
If you own just about any mirrorless camera, that's what you've already seen through the viewfinder. Apparently it's not enough to cause a reaction, as there are no warnings on the outside of the box.
