The Jury, Hot Day for a Hanging, The Smiler, The Tall Stranger, The Newcomers, Feet of Clay....so many of the best were Hoss episodes...
Had a TV in my room from about the time I was 10. After Johnny Carson, the local station played re-runs of Star Trek and Bonanza. Can't tell you how many nights I fell asleep after watching some Cartwright adventure or another. Great memories.
Surprising they even did the final season after Dan blocker passed. Of all the seasons the networks request for syndication the final season is requested the least, it just wasn't the same without Hoss!
My favorite scenes with Hoss were when Hop Sing caught him stealing a doughnut. When he realized that Little Joe was teasing him when he thought that he found a leprechaun. And when he and Little Joe were playing bull fighters.
A lot of people learned English by watching American television. My best friend lived in Israel when ‘Dallas’ was on. Everyone there wanted to know who killed JR. Just like us. We watched MASH when we were visiting Sweden in 1978.
I always loved the shows where you would see the character by himself. Hoss in Gallagher's sons, or Any Friend Of Walter's. You always got to enjoy their acting more. Festus in Gunsmoke's Eleven Dollars, or Dillion in Matt's Love Story. They would be in their own adventure. Hopsing falling in love was another favorite. Those were my favorite shows it seems. The shows had incredible writing, and very good plots, and some surprises. Television has been lost in space more then the Robinson family. I find myself watching the reruns more then the latest shows.
In that first scene, Hoss walks around a big guy -- that's legendary B-horror movie actor Tor Johnson as San Francisco fighting champion Busthead Brannigan. Too bad Bonanza didn't flesh out a better part for Tor as Brannigan -- it would've been terrific. Probably Tor's least remembered (1960) part but most revered acting credit.

That fight at 3:13 is impressive. Knock-down drag-out. The physicality is over the top. Guarantee they felt that for a few days afterward.

Dan Blocker was quite smart in real life. Before he was an actor, he was a high school English teacher. Not at all like the part he played.
