I was born a big guy in 1955, and later at school my mates nicknamed me Hoss, after Dan Blocker's portrayal of Hoss Cartwright in Bonanza. Loved the series in the 60's although in the UK, we could only watch it in Black and White on the TV. RIP Dan, you were much loved and still are loved by many of us over here over the pond, even to this day.

My uncle worked for the Blockers at the grocery. Dan would be about 9 yrs at this time. He was a studious mind set and a gentle person, said my uncle. In fact he was picked on because of his love for books, so my uncle asked Mr Blocker if he could help. He taught Hoss fighting back of the grocery. Two weeks later Dan exclaimed to my dad's brother that: I licked em, I licked em. Dad noticed the big kid when his dad and brothers traded with the Blockers. He said he had no vivid memories of him because he was quite. Dad's only sharp memory was of elementary age Dan hauling out a 100 lb sack of potatoes to their wagon. He was sure the 'kid" was going to drop the burlap bag, but Hoss tossed the load over the railing into the wagon. Another memory from our family was from my older brother. He heard Dan speak to his English class at Sul Ross. He said Blocker was a great orator, or very professional sounding. As I write this 2024, I was in Sonora yesterday. Memories of Dan are like a distant echo. I never met anyone who knew him, but some who knew others who did. For me my first memory of O'donnell was in summer 1963, we were eating homemade ice cream in my Aunts' yard. I was 6 years old so, I sat and listened to the adults. We said our "good bys." I was confused over their conversation. In the vein of a confused Beaver Cleaver, I squeaked out to my dad that: aunt acted like she knew Hoss. He rejoined that she went to school with him. We were driving down the non descript dusty small main street which passed the grocer. Dad pointed to the closed up diminutive store front explaining Dan had worked there with his Dad and Saturdays Grandad bought groceries from the store. I thought this all crazy. How did Hoss get from here to Hollywood then into our TV. At that time, we received one TV station from Midland/Odessa which quickly faded to the "snowy" either as the noon hour approached. And this place Hollywood, in my mind, was kind of a make believe quantum like world which existed in waves until observed which converted to an alternate reality. Looking at the dinghy depression era little store somehow broke the illusion of "make believe" in my mind. Bonanza was never the same. The magic of a log mansion and towering pine trees was gone. In its place were depression era visions of the dust bowl: ankle high overalls, bare feet, and glum smiles. Hoss, like man himself, had been born of the dust. According to my parents, who lived 8 miles south of the town, dust was in everything. It was in your food, your toothbrush, your hair, your furniture, and even between the sheets of your bed. This was the real truth that had been concealed over the years. Hoss rolled off the dusty dry depression-poor-plains of the "dust bowl!"

All the actors on Bonanza were very good actors. But you were right, I was just a young fellow when I first watched the show and instantly was drawn in by the kindness, loving side of Dan. He made me want to be like his character. Funny, kind and protective of other people. I can see why his son loved him so much. I loved him, and he wasn't even my dad. He could be so serious one minute and then make you laugh so hard you cried the next. All my family watched, and was mostly to see him. There are times today I'll be doing something outside, cutting wood or fixing something around the house, and out of nowhere, hoss pops up. Yep I still miss him. God rest his good heart and soul, we love you Dan.

We were driving around in Dan’s Ford Falcon near Malibu one day. It was a column shift of course. He shifted from First to Second gear so hard, he pulled the knob off and his fist kept going, right through the front windshield. Can’t see a thing now. He rolled down the window in order to see, and pulled up onto the sidewalk. We all sat there laughing our asses off. Well, we’d had a beer or two…. He was a strong fellow, but a kind soul. Him and I were both from Texas, but here we are in Hollywood having school boy fun. Sure enjoyed ya Dan.

I heard Dan , in his early 20's, got a bit if a reputation as a brawler. This lasted until his dad had a heart to heart talk with him. Dad explained if he persisted, he'd run across a smaller man who didn't want to be whipped by a huge man, and would pull a gun on him. Dan took the message to heart and changed his ways.

YES is my answer to your question. Dan Blocker was/IS an ICON without ANY doubt. His roll as Hoss filled an important roll and was a Roll Model for many individuals especially for those of the same "Body Type". It showed a representation of "The Big Boy" and those larger than life. It meant that there have always been "BIG dudes" in our past including in the frontier days. THANK YOU MR Blocker and when I was a young boy watching Blacksheep squadron, I knew right away who Dirk Blocker was. His resemblance alone was all I needed to see that this was a "Hoss Child".

Crosley built the smallest cars of any US manufacturer in the 40's, so we can imagine that this was quite a site.

My grandfather Dan looked just like Dan Blocker family history tells a story about when he and my grandmother were at the World's Fair. Young kids followed him, asking for autographs he told the kids he was not Hoss they continued to follow him them grandma said Dan just sign the autographs for the kids, so he did sign autographs Hoss Cartwright. So if you were a kid at the World's fair and Hoss Cartwright signed an autograph for you, it was actually the man who invented the push button lock system for car doors.

It makes sense that he was a democrat back in the day that the Democratic Party was considered a good party despite its horrible beginnings. I do not think Dan Blocker would agree with the how far and crazy liberal left Democrats have become. I was 6yrs old when I my father brought Dan home with him, in Jan of 72, to have dinner with us and to talk about building a racing team in the Formula Super Vee series to build up drivers for the Indy 500. He wanted to run a 2 car team which was widely unheard of at that time for a lower series. At the cost of $5000 each per car back then, Dan had 2 brand new Lola's delivered to my fathers shop in Anaheim, Ca. From January to I believe early April, I had the enjoyment of having dinner with Dan 5 times. Even now, I still remember his laughter in real laugh was as genuine as it was in Bonanza. As for the race team that he started with me father, they finished 5th and 13th for the season running on an extremely limited budget after Dan's death. My father's team went on later on to win several Championships a March car that he put together from various parts of car from 3 different series. The 1st car we names was "Dan"

I was traveling through Indonesia way back in 1975 for a few months on a shoestring budget having just graduated from college a few months earlier. For a couple of nights I stayed in a small cheap hotel in the Java port city of Surabaya. This was a very non-tourist hotel directly across the street from a mosque in which virtually every hotel guest was a native Indonesian -- not a tourist. As far as I know, I was the only American -- much less the only Westerner -- staying there those couple of nights ... or if there were other Westerners staying there those days, I never saw them. The hotel had a community room set up with about 50 chairs and a single small black and white TV on a high rack. On Wednesday night, the room was packed with Indonesians (all men since Islam separated out the women) who all came to watch an episode of Bonanza, as they would do every Wednesday night because Wednesday night there was Bonanza Night. The episode wasn't even dubbed. An announcer would first appear on the TV to explain the entire episode beforehand in the native language -- Bahasa Indonesia -- and then the audience would simply watch the show for the entertainment despite not understanding the language the same way someone would enjoy -- say -- an Italian opera despite not knowing any Italian. The funniest moment was that the audience all knew I was THE American sitting there. And the moment the Bonanza intro began, the Cartwrights rode up together into close-up and the famous Bonanza theme music began, the entire audience all turned in unison and looked at me as if riding around like the Cartwrights on horseback wearing a cowboy hat was something they assumed I always did at home. And here I was on the other side of the world in an exotic country as strange to me as America must have seemed to them, joining with Indonesians to watch an episode of Bonanza.
