  • Bonanza - Episode 48 - The Courtship - Hoss falls prey to the wiles of a beautiful woman with a gambling addiction and refuses to believe she's only interested in his money in spite of Adam's proof to the contrary.
    The Courtship
    Director: James P. Yarbrough
Writer: Richard Morgan (as Richard N. Morgan)
Stars: Pernell Roberts, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
Release Date: 7 January 1961 USA
Filming Locations: Paramount Studios - 5555 Melrose Avenue, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA
    Storyline:
"Hoss and Little Joe travel to Sacramento to help the widow of an old friend of the Cartwrights. Hoss discovers that the widow is a beautiful young woman and immediately falls in love with her. He brings her back to the Ponderosa where Adam and Little Joe soon discover that the woman is in love with Hoss's money, not him, which she needs to fund her gambling addiction. When Hoss refuses to believe his brothers, Adam is forced to provide demonstrable proof in Virginia City casino." Written by David Bassler on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
    "Main characters: Helen Layton
    Main Bonanza Character: Hoss
    Missing characters: None
Julie Adams...I cannot stand her characters! I remember her in "Nora" when she played on The Rifleman and couldn't stand her for what she did. Now she gets poor Hoss believing her words!
Hoss is a sweetie. He is so willing to do for others and love someone that it didn't take much for her to get him right where she wanted him.
This episode starts out comical between Hoss and Little Joe, and then soon turns serious when Hoss helps a widow in distress. Secretly, she has another problem that puts a wedge between Hoss and his family.
The episode was good, but I didn't like Julie Adams' character!" Written by mitchrmp on IMDb.com
"This episode finds Dan Blocker and Michael Landon traveling to meet the widow of an old Ben Cartwright friend. Expecting a senior citizen they are happy to find Julie Adams a beautiful 30 something. Hoss is in love.
But Adams is not all she seems and the hints are there, but Dan Blocker is just too blind to see it. And Lorne Greene doesn't want to hurt his middle son.
Adams is the worst kind of gold digger one with a gambling problem and the insatiable need for money that comes withit.
This one is Dan Blocker's episode. This story shows what a gentle giant Hoss Cartwright was and why he was such a beloved character. You hate Adams all the more.
This one is especially for Dan Blocker's fans." Written by bkoganbing on IMDb.com

This for me is one of most memorable episodes of the whole series. Hoss getting as far as he did with a girl was extremely rare, and seeing how generous and forgiving he was was I think an insight into how lonely and desperate his character was quietly going a long in life and Joe and Adam always being the ones who had success with the ladies.
But the most memorable part had nothing to do with the plot. It was that line where she says to Hoss "Does Ponderosa look like this"? And Hoss says "We've been riding through the Ponderosa for the last two days". Lol that's a big spread.
Also the way he explained how they Cartwrights thought about the Ponderosa was really beautiful.

The problem of addiction is the underlying theme of this episode. And Hoss' romance and pending marriage is the conflict. The widowed woman tells one-side of the story that benefits her, and sucks Hoss into her web. Adam who was off in San Francisco, come back and gives the other side. Here again, we can fast forward to our time and see that negative addictions tend to destroy relationships, unless harnessed and halted. Hoss is in love with the widow and won't here of her negative side. Adam and Little Joe cook up a means to show Hoss the truth. Hoss is so easy to help anyone, any animal in distress, that it hurts to see him being taken advantage of. Julie Adams' plays her selfish, gold-digging character well. And the Gentle Giant is his lovable self. A Dan Blocker episode.

No matter if you got a gambling addiction or not. if you're losing your money if you lose your ass you quit playing. And you don't go back. Almost like that Kenny Rogers song years ago The Gambler. I must have missed that one years ago but I can't believe a woman even especially a beautiful woman is going to do something so horrible like that to Hoss Cartwright. And then when the horse finds her addiction she just walks past and leaves him it goes off with another guy. How does a woman like that even live with herself. But like I said with Hoss's actions he never laid a hand on the woman he just walked away and moved on with his life. That's what a real true man is supposed to do. And Hoss Cartwright is definitely a real man. The other sad thing is that you knew something bad was gonna happen. The Cartwright curse as always. She was either gonna die or leave the Cartwright.

In every movie I've ever seen Julie Adams in, she's always playing the victim, the way she moves and presents herself, she's the seductress. The role is significant in that it shows the wiles of a coyote in the female vampire.
