Ford's Most Overrated Car? I Drive A STOCK 1996 Escort RS Cosworth And Find Out
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 сер 2020
- Some cars grow a legend that you'd think it would be impossible to live up to. Such is the case with the Ford Escort Cosworth. The baddest car you could buy in the 1990s, and so connected with crime that it became uninsurable. However, 25 years on, what is this almost mythical creature like to drive?

The Escort Cosworth still looks amazing even today. I remember years ago, driving past some rich dudes massive house and seeing two lone vehicles sitting outside on the drive. One was a helicopter.....and the other was a Cossie. Still one of the coolest things I've seen!
the big wing in the back that was suposed to have 3 instead of only two downforce boards along the back window as the original engenier and designer said when it came out i felt like i was carrying a huge volume atatched to the back of the car and everybody that passed by me were looking like if i was driving a weird thing ,i even took it from the car and put the regular one that almost every escort at the time had ,but it grows on you and i install it again this to do refer that makes the car incredible safe at high-speeds i remenber driving in a highway at 160km´s hour and felt like the car was almost stoped, i remenber looking to the body and notice that in diferent panels there were lines opened to help its stability as on the back of the top there was a decrease of height having a air flow to the lowest wing(sorry if my english is confusing)
Girls car though innit
@petter todger
Got any more tall stories...??
Ironically, it was designed by an American, Spanish , British designer... I disagree with you, that car was ahead of its time. Did you know that it inspired BMW M3 ?
@@dinorossi6611 the M3 was launched years before the Escort Cosworth…
I remember being stationed in Germany in the army in the 90’s and a new Polaris grey Escort Cossie drove into camp. A crowd gathered around it at Regimental HQ. All us lads drooling over it. Good times.

I still remember the day when i saw a certain repsol orange cossie, well heard popping and banging into sight came this dream machine. But then I remember a certain Mitsubishi dancing through the forest, oh then remember a certain Subaru Impreza broad side before being unceremoniously barrel rolled at the next stage.
Aaah the good old days☺
I remember that Cossie, it was a beast
I love your honesty. I have to say you are so accurate with your descriptions. Great viewing.
Sometimes, you don't need to drive a car to know they're special.
some cars can still be special even if they're average to drive
My friend’s dad had one of these in 1995. The way it went around corners just staggered me. I’d never been in anything that cornered so flat up until then.
here I go again... " back in the day " .. I got to drive one and in comparison with everything else it was a game changer nothing could hold a candle to it, the grip and pace it could generate simply blew everything else away, North Wales could be traversed at light speed and its mythical status was properly deserved. And if your wondering I confess I was one of those yobs, thanks again for the memories.
Always a pleasure Roger

Yep, you had to be there to understand how amazing these boys were 👍
Agree...you had to be in one to see what they were all about.
A friend of mine around '95 had one. Just to be clear he was a lunatic, older and had a bit of change and drove it too the max. When we were in it, or even him driving past, you knew what that machine done. To put it into perspective, we have have cars that do this now, but my god this was 25 years ago!!!!!
Although I see where your coming from and being a young boy who loved these when growing up and still does to look at. Some of the Japanese offerings around that time were superior to the escort. A JDM spec Integra type r would be very similar in performance amongst many others.
This video is an example why your channel is worth watching, your not just into one make & your prepared to have your preconceived ideas changed! Many thanks
He Must be the only guy that doesn’t like Lancia Detla Integrale...
Funny Tragic story. A guy at my Halls of residence at Uni in 1st year had a Lancia Delta intrgrale.
His dad was a banking dude and lived in Switzerland. This was 92.
The guy was a bit unhinged and one drunken night he came back and danced on the roof of his intrgrale and bent the fuck out of it.
He dropped out shortly afterwards.
Such a waste of a car and very probably a life.
I guess his Dad was busy and not present enough when he was growing up?
A lesson for us all.
Luv and Peace.

Unfortunately he drove a not very well sorted Integrale. He should get in another one that is in good order.
I'd say he does like the Lancia but didn't like how it drove.
I also don't understand that, just the fact that the clutch on the escort cosworth is heavy as hell is enough to prefer the lancia.
Beautiful seeing these 90s classics in this kind of condition. Really feels like a time warp

Great review 👍
We never had these for sale new in Australia ( I don’t think 🤔) but there are a few imported floating around.
Thanks for posting this. Really enjoyed it.
Cosseh. On the subject of Clarkson, there is an interesting story behind why he has so much affection for them (from his Sunday newspaper column). He got a phone call late one night to say his dad was seriously ill in hospital up in Sheffield and wasn't expected to live much longer. He absolutely hammered the car up from London, doing speeds that even he won't admit to. He got there in time and had a few minutes to say his goodbyes. However many faster, more exotic or somehow "better" cars there are on the planet, that sort of thing matters, and it stays with you.
Actually that was a story he told about a Porshe 928. It was diring the Pattagonia Special where they had to leave due to the 'Falklands' number plate.

When that RS badge goes onto a Ford, you know it’s going to be special.
Maybe not so much on the new 4 cylinder one.
Except for anything after this car

The Escort Cosworth was actually built on the Sierra Saphire Cosworth floor pan bulk, head & inner wings shortened slightly, hence it was some 3 or 4 inches wider than the standard Escort and longer.
Actually its a double skinned floorpan, whereas the Sierra's isn't. That's why the Escort is a bit heavier.

Love this natural and honest review. Such a timeless icon and car :). Love Cossies :).
Frank Stevenson didn’t actually design the car, he only contributed and designed the “whaletail” Stephen Harper was the chief designer for the entire Escort Cosworth programme.
I can't help but hear the above sentence spoken in a nasally tone...
I don’t think he put much time into it, the driveline was already sitting in the Sierra, and the escort was already in production.
@@checker3694 A little more than you would think actually this car has a sierra floor pan with the ferguson four four wheel drive system & bespoke body panels to make it look like an escort but none of the body panels will interchange between the two cars
Deviant Rider it’s pretty obvious the wings and rear panels are different, also the Sierra driveline that’s sitting under there nose. There is nothing bespoke about, its a rebodied sapphire cosworth. But it’s a better attempt than the mk2 escorts RS back in the day, at least you get something for your money with the cosworth fords.
@@checker3694 its not at all a rebodied sapphire its a shortened sierra floor pan & ford first used the 4x4 system in 1985 on the sierra xr4x4 which in turn was used in the mid 60's on the jensen interceptor FF

Great video really enjoyed that! You should drive a decent MK2 Focus RS - that would make you smile too
A wonderous thing. Yesterdays Hero. I'll adore it all my life, but today no more daunting than a mid range 1 series. I'll always love them.
The hype was so strong that even from across the pond, American car enthusiasts have heard of and desired the ol' Cossie when she made her debut in the early 90s.
Nice example in the best colour and unmodified which is very rare indeed! That is going to be worth top dollar.
Great to see a convert to this car - even better being an owner of a '94 T25 YBP one, currently getting it fully (body/engine/transmission/drivetrain/trim/paint/aircon/younameit to nut/bolt level - restored back to its former glory. Have always owned Escorts (1.6GL/XR3i Mk3/XR3i Mk4/RS2000 Mk5) previously and had this one since '99 and never wanted anything else since! All thanks to Henry Ford...
Shame as I would love to have heard more of the lovely YB from the inside, it's a very addictive sound. Apart from that a good honest review. Love the Escort RS Cosworth ❤️
Amazingly pretty car when you consider how bland the basis was, I mean I know it's actually a Sierra but the styling aped the Escort.
You don’t need blue lights and sirens behind you to have fun in this thing 😂😂😂 love it
Loving your honest and direct content Jay. Us petrolheads deserve the truth about cars we can never get our hands on. Have a stock Mk4 supra turbo for you to review some day. Just in a different country :D
That intro is absolutely amazing, like a fine whiskey 😍
A friend of mind had one of the very first cars with the big turbo
In its day it was bloody quick but ate front tyres at an alarming rate - 2/3k miles and the edges had gone. I’d still have one though!
"Modern cars are far less comfortable."
Well maybe because the need to have 21" wheels and have close to zero bump suspension travel to look cool. This one proves you don't need that!
21" wheels and tyres that are literally a coat of black paint round the rim!
Absolutely! My Elise will out-handle anything and it has 16s front and 17s rear.
@Solid Snake in what way do regulations require silly large rims and a lowering? Cars without them still exist but then comments are like 'it looks like a SUV, it's so high' and 'look at those balloon tyres, needs bigger rims' and similar.
@Solid Snake What regulations? List the regulations that 'force' manufacturers to have firm suspension and big wheels.
@Solid Snake I tried to look up, saw crap falling out of your mouth and so I left my desk.
A friend who was an engineer at Ford Dunton brought a Cossie home for the weekend and took me out for
spin round the back of Maldon.
It had a few mods like a rally spec turbo - oh and front drive train was disconnected! Truly the fastest thing I have ever been in!
Perfect intro ,loved it lol
This video makes me very happy
The RS Cossie has always been a favorite of mine growing up. More so since we did not get one in the States (like many cars).
Yes but never got muscle cars so pay back ha
I remember going to a local rally event back in 2002 or so, to spectate. A mate of ours had one of this in a shade lighter blue (subary type) and the rally was like 500km's away, no highways, quite a drive. I remember the first part of the journey being really smooth then he pulled over, got a small wrench thing and fiddled a bit with the wastegate. The car was making like 300hp all of sudden and you could really feel the added boost and pull =))
That was such a fun trip, love this car to this day.

For "Wow" moments, espeically on a B road, complemented by immense feedback and interaction, the Cosworth does not come close. The only other car I would consider would be the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO V1 TME, for similar thrills, but even that car cannot give as much feedback as the Delta.

My abiding memory of the Escort RS Cosworth was back in my teenage years.
My mates & I were out on our bikes when we heard the screeching of tyres and a loud bang, we turned our heads to see a MKII Cavalier SRi had lost control and went straight into a fence.
We rushed over to see 4 rather sheepish teens getting out of their (I assume) Vauxhall.
The owner of the fence came out of his farm house, looking rather annoyed at his damaged property.
He turned around, went back to his house and retrieved his Escort RS Cosworth, in exactly the same spec as the one in the video, & parked it up just ahead of the Cavalier.
Straight away I knew why he'd done this, basically there's no way these guys were going to even think of reversing out & driving off.
The power & presence of the Cossie was enough to keep them there until the police arrived.
It was the UK equivalent of keeping a gun trained on them, utterly brilliant.
This is spot on. There was a strange mystique about a cossie. I had a fast rsturbo that could easily beat a standard cossie but the question and mystique was always, is this standard or 3bar map with greens or some T4 8 injector weapon. You didnt know if it was about to be all show and not much go, or pretty damn fast or ultra warp speed if it was a full touring car spec build. That and you always had doubts about their owners and how nuts they were :).

These Cossies were my favourite but I do remember Essex Police (Colchester?) had a grey Sierra RS Cosworth and you could hear the dump valve at the bottom end of the high street. It wasn't a subtle car. It did pull over lots of boy racers though.
Their main reasoning for having them though was proably to do with the fact that they had to patrol the A12... basically a drag strip between Suffolk and London linking the capital to the port of Felixstowe.... ie., a very busy drugs route.
I remember they had one of the very last Vauxhall Senators on the road, they loved them so much. M-reg, yes, M-reg. That late. I believe it was a metallic burgundy in colour.
This is also the force that bought Subaru Imprezas and Skoda Octavia VRS cars to patrol their patch. Crazy.
By the time Ford made the one you drove, they had had a long development and were pretty well sorted. The only thing that spoiled them was muppets winding up the boost to try get more power. All that did was cut the fuelling to protect the engine from overboost so it then ran like a dog.
If they were modified by a decent tuning company then they were good but a lot were bodged and you could get them to 300 to 400 bhp reliably
They did a standard version and a lux version if I remember with a few more luxuries at the time.
Also a Motorsport version

Certainly the Sierras had a reputation for being nicked as soon as you parked them but I don't remember that so much about the Escort...
Seem to remember that the insurance premium was about the same as the cost of the car as the insurance companies knew that it would be nicked pretty quickly.
they did enjoy blowing hoses for fun too if you were a little enthusiastic :D

If those damn nickers had nicked bmws instead eh, but them not so easy to nick coss they have nicker alarm and immobilizer to stop them from being nicked. Nick.
I remember getting a spin in one in 1994 and blowing my mind, huge leap from an rs turbo..then jdm sti and evos arrived a few years later and made them look sloppy
Evos and imprezas were the invasive species of the rally world, great machines with no up front competition
It did but Ford only gave about 225hp for the cossie they could of offered 280ish but they for Insurance , but I think a Stage 1 got you to 280. But Evo and Scooby did take it to another level but the Cossie sent youth crazy

Need to do a round up of the Cossie v GTFour v Lancia Integrale v Sunny GTiR
But an Impreza STi or Evo trounce on them all.
No thanks subaru the piston melters.
@@tracktimevideos5164 I was meaning these 4 models in a "1994" comparison. Impreza v EVO has been done to death.
Lotus Charlton aswell.
@ND7800 the Escort Cosworth was around in 1993 as was the Evo and Impreza.
It really surprises me to say this, but this video is not bad. Not bad at all. It really is. I thought it would be rubbish. But it's just not. 🙂
Kind words indeed
Alex Roebuck It’s like the old Top Gear and that’s not a bad thing.
