Googled - The word curry has been around for 800 years or so and means “to rub down or groom a horse.” It comes from the French word correier, which means to put order to, prepare or arrange. This makes perfect sense as to why it's called the curry comb because we are rearranging the horse's hair into a more ideal direction.
Joka seamed to be really enjoying her shedding session. Her co grooming buddies will also appreciate not getting a mouth full of hair next time they are grooming each other.
LOL Joka is so chill. "A little more off the back, Graeme. Thank you" This was fun to watch. A great way to start off my work day. But now my nose is itching! lol
Very satisfying! This was also A great video to appreciate Joka‘s features, such as her leg feathers, dorsal stripe, and magnificent tail! Thank you Graeme!
I loved to brush horses when I was a kid, but I don't know anyone with any now. I'm just watching with a smile, drinking my coffee. Remembering exactly how messy the hair is and how dirty my hands got, but it was so satisfying. I'm sure it feels great. Such a beautiful fluffer.
It was very satisfying to watch and I'm sure it was satisfying for Joka too. For a moment she looked like she was going to nod off standing with her head down and hay in her mouth ;)
My horse loved having that done. His nose would twitch all the time. He got grumpy when I stopped. I did the same thing. Made a huge pile of hair in the corner of the field and many birds flew in to retrieve some x
I just love Joka. She doesnt have to say a word bc her eyes and countenance say it all. I love watching her run. I find her beautiful. She was watching you brush her with appreciation in her eyes. I could watch her all day.
Hey Graeme, you missed a spot. Lol, just kidding.. It's a bit like ASMR watching her enjoy her brushing even though I know how much work it is. She was definitely loving it though.
😳😳😳That is a lot of hair! Save some of that wonderful Joka floof and make Zeus a little friend, lol😊 I'm thinking Nordic horses and dogs have more undercoat than some other breeds. My Norwegian Elkhound had lots of under floof for the birds. Would be interesting to see how much comes off Gracie. Thanks for sharing the Joka "salon" visit...I guess the tip jar would be filled with the love of a good horse...best tip to have.🥰
WOW! That is a lot of hair. Looks like a good workout for you also, not that you need it. She will not get cold if you have more bitter weather will she? I love her facial expressions when you hit a good spot!🥰
I really enjoy brushing horses that shed their winter coat. De-shedding is such a satisfying activity, to see all the old stuff come out ! And I am sure the horses really enjoy it too, it's itchy and hot. Joka looked relaxed and content, and it was very relaxing to watch 😊
There's an amazing deshedding tool called the Equigroomer! It wss originally made for horses but can be used on dogs and cats also. It gets rid of undercoat without irritating skin or pulling coat. All animals I've seen being groomed with it have thoroughly enjoyed it! Maybe something to check out? :D
ah yes, the heavily overpriced and glorified piece of wood with a hacksaw blade embedded in it. Got it as a gift from somebody that loved it, used it once, never again.
@@StableHorseTraining Hahah alright! It was pretty cheap where I got it, and worked well. Glad to know you got it for free since it seems you really didn’t like it. May I ask why? Did the horses seem to not enjoy it (i remember you saying some deshedding tools can be a little uncomfortable for horses at first) or did it simply not work as well as you wanted it to? ^^
The sharper the tines with more serrations and "hooks" the more it pulls hair out. You can see it in the video on their website too. It doesn't matter to me, I don't care and am not personally invested either way, it's just not something I want to use on my horses.
I love this. I could spend hours giving scratches and brushings. You're going to need to vacuum yourself. LoL The birds are going to have nice floofy nests.
Keep the hair for the birds🕊️ the nesting season is coming.. Joka doesn't care she keeps eating! But she loves the scratching with the brush! In Iceland, they have a very thick coat in the long winter... You have a lot of traffic today.
Yes, usually I apply a filter that blocks out the noise of the traffic, but when I did that it also removed the sound of the brushing and it just felt weird.. So in this one you get both. It also was a time of the day that traffic was a bit busy from school pickup etc.
@@StableHorseTraining thank you for revealing your secret! because for quite a while I thought you had less traffic than a couple of years ago! That's great for us but still bad for you in real life. Here is the same. Traffic has drastically increased unfortunately covering the birds' gossips at certain times of the day! Anyway, thank you because hearing the noise of the brush is great!
Yes yes, I did very much enjoy watching that. It is (as yet) an unfulfilled ambition of mine to groom a horse. Though I live in the New Forest (UK) where 4500 ponies roam freely you can’t touch them! 😍🐎.
It's called a curry brush because it's shaped like a curry comb but with rubber teeth so you can't harm the skin. I love 'em. I bet that felt wonderful to her.
When we remodeled the bathroom in our 1930s rural home.....we found that the walls were insulated with horsehair. Well......I guess, now that I see it all....they had a good idea reusing it
I learned everything about horses, ponies and mini horses from the BC Canada Therapeutic Riding Centre but it has been several years since I have been around them and riding them,so I am rusty and probably need a refresher course if you know what I mean
That's got to feel so good to Joka! It's exhausting getting it all off when they blow their winter coat. You think you've done an amazing job and the next day there's still more! Great for them though since you're stimulating blood flow and natural oils to the skin.
Even though this video was uploaded on you tube 1 year ago I love this video and I enjoyed watching it.The Icelandic horse is my favorite horse breed, just the right size for me to ride,I am 4'7".I have not ridden an Icelandic Horse and it would be nice to ride one .Your Icelandic horse is really beautiful and I love the color of your horse's coat. What are they like to own, take care of and ride?
Every year, I find myself wondering where in the devil they were hiding all this hair! My horse is not nearly as shaggy as Yoka, but he always sheds off a huge amount of hair in the Spring. And I don't know if eating hair is harmful, but I always try to avoid this sort of brushing in the area where the horse is eating from the hay pile. Seems like the hair could cause some digestive problems. I am just going with my 'feelings' on that one, so ignore it if you disagree.
I'm not going to "disagree" but I can say without a doubt that I've never seen any problems with horses that cogroom or groom themselves and I have also never heard of it being an issue. They don't get hairballs like cats and their intestines are huge and pass a lot of material. So, while it's probably a bit better in some way to make sure it doesn't fall in their food (I don't think it did here), it shouldn't make much of a difference.
Just being around horses, hands on therapy and listening to them eating their grain, hay, grazing on the grass, riding them is so therapeutic, unfortunately I can't get equine therapy or ride them where I live because to get equine therapy, etc is really expensive that I cannot afford,I am legally blind with limited vision and I know that if there is a will and a way I can and will find a way to get fit to ride, and my goal is to work on my dream of riding an Icelandic horse in the near future, maybe lease a horse to ride, take care of and handle by myself and I am capable of doing that when I have the money to do that
Joka's living her best life. Eating while getting scratches, massage....that's a lot of hair!
Kinda mesmerizing
The fluffy icelandic is a lot less fluffy now. 😂 The amount of hair that came off is amazing. The birds will love that for their nests.
I bet so too ☺️
We brush our dogs outside for the same reason. The birdies love fur lined nests! ❤❤❤

ah! thanks! I appreciate that.
TFS! I never knew that and always wondered. Carrier - to put order to, prepare, arrange. Wonderful.

Yeah spa day for Joka.

That fur will make warm baby bird blankets. Recycling fur, a win win. Watching is oddly satisfying, very relaxing.

That’s a lot of hair from a darn adorable pony!
It's so funny how we seem to be working for our pets. I bet the ETs are thinking, who's really in charge down here ?!!LOL😄
They know it's the cats who are really in charge on this planet. Every cat owner knows this.
Oh! She is loving that!! So will her horse friends that help groom her🤣😂❤️
Wow! I bet a lot of birds are happy with all that nesting material! That must feel so good for Joka. Even her ears are furry!

That was a lot of nesting material for the birds. God set it up perfectly for shedding that supplies soft linings for bird's nests.
It really makes a difference. She gorgeous again.
so satisfying I loved brushing my horses

Oh I can watch this all day! 😄
Thank you. I did enjoy watching this. She looks so much better. She's so loveable.
Really enjoyed the furnado, thanks so much! Little floof just enjoying the attention. 😄
Need a film for each horse x
Spa day lol snacks and good brushings. Man the hair is she sheds WOW lol
That was SOOOOO satisfying!!!!!🤗 I could totally brush the horses!! Looks like fun!!!!🤭
Nice to see Joka get a good scrubby scrub!
I always forget just how much fur she sheds after winter! It's gotta feel good to get all the itchy hair out, and she is definitely not complaining
She sure enjoyed her massage ❤
Oh ,so much hair!
It's a spa day for sweet Joka.
She loves the scratches 🐴🥰

So glad you did this for Joka ☺ I was hoping you would video it. Very satisfying to watch! She is one fluffy monkey. She thanks you and we thank you❤
You could start a Patreon and give folks the de-shedding videos of all the rest of the horses! They are so satisfying and calming to watch!
I do have a Patreon 😊

Wow! She had tons come off! Be advised, do not wear lip balm when it’s shedding season 😂😂😂
I've never seen anyone else leave the shed fur for the birds! I have always done that and everyone said I was nuts and just making a big mess
That must feel so good to her.

A sure sign of spring coming when the fur starts flying. Not sure if that is true or anecdotal, but the two always seem to correlate. 🤣
When the days get longer and a bit warmer they naturally shed off their hair.
Wow she has a good winter coat!!
Awe she looks so pretty
hi from australia i love these videos cheers

Like ASMR so soothing to watch. You could do a regular series of these with each horse and I would watch for sure. ❤
David will think he has a new horse !!
There’s going to be lots of warm nests 😁
Joka is so pretty!
Joka was very, very hairy. Now, maybe Luke will be more inclined to co-groom with Joka again.
Your horse has trained you well!
Hello from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 I wish it was this easy to brush my cat.
Hello!
A spa day AND lunch …. What more could a girl want ! 💕🤣👍
It's called a curry brush because it's shaped like a curry comb but with rubber teeth so you can't harm the skin. I love 'em. I bet that felt wonderful to her.
You should check the comments for the answer as to why it's called a curry comb. It's interesting!
They are great on German shepherds also.
Or Labrador Retrievers!
When we remodeled the bathroom in our 1930s rural home.....we found that the walls were insulated with horsehair. Well......I guess, now that I see it all....they had a good idea reusing it
Looks like you might need some brushing down after the amount of fluff that clung to you, Graeme! LOL
Beautiful horse.
thank you!
Never ending story 😆🤣
you could knit a Joka out of her hair
That was some extra workout, good job!
That looks so therapeutic... I'd love a go....
Thanks this was satisfying 😅 i bet she enjoyed it!
You have a beautiful horse!
You should just carry that around with you for when the horses want scratches. ❤️
He does...
You should try a high velocity blower/leaf blower/vacuum!
Not sure if she'd tolerate the noise, though....
Great video! Is your arm sore after all that brushing? She looks so clean and shiny now!

Unbelievable - it looks like you are shaving her! It`s still winter there in Canada so will it grow long again and fast??
WOW! I bet she lost 5 pounds of hair. Lookin good!
She loves what you are doing to her I bet it felt good too
Looks like she lost a little weight there! 😆
I offered last year, but if you’ll ship some to me I’ll buy it. I’m a fiber artist 😊
I think I was worried about it not being a shippable item... I'll have to look into it

I don't think there is any difference in horse breeds to care for, it all depends on how they were brought up and then subsequently trained.
Using the hand brush in the second half looks like you're washing a car or something XD

Never
I wonder if the birds have a favorite horse hair to get for their rest.
They like the fluffy undercoat of cold climate horses for stuffing their mattress and the smoother longer hairs for the bed sheets 😉
Now what color do you call her? She seems kind of peachy, color I’ve never seen before?
