I have trained in almost a dozen combat arts and hold my 5th in Hapkido. It is by far the most aggressive martial art I have EVER studied. I have had Krav Maga students, Kung Fu students, Combat Hapkido students and all across the Karate realm for students. The biggest problem you will find in Hapkido are that there is a proliferation of Tae Kwon Do schools teaching a watered down version or simply just their TKD with some HKD techniques rolled in to it and passing it all off as real and pure Hapkido. Hell, we do not kick the same as TKD or even train the same. Find yourself a good Hapkido school that will also teach you how to strike and implement your foundation techniques into your striking repritoir and has not forgotten their ground work and you will be amazed at what you become. And just so people know. Hapkido DOES NOT come from Tae Kwon Do and or Aikido. Both Aikido and Hapkido stem from Diato Ryu Aiki jujutsu and the founders first official student when he returned to Korea from Japan was a Judo black belt. Defense against ground fighters as well as ground work from this Judo BB was an integral [art of HKD in the beginning and many good schools will still teach that Judo based foundational aspect as well. And being that many TKD schools teach a watered down form of Hapkido or some Hapkido techniques for their self defense portion, many people mistakenly think that there is more of or a deeper connection between the two. I have even had TKD instructors try and tell me that HKD is just advanced TKD, until they went on the mat with me and realized they knew nothing of HKD and our techniques.

very interesting...I cannot decide between learning TKD or HKD

    • @straycat1674
      @straycat1674 6 років тому +15

leepakim There is nothing wrong with learning both. TKD would be best if you wish to compete. HKD is not a competition art, and HKD as taught in 99% of TKD schools is not true HKD. Now there will be exceptions. But the requirements for us to get black belt if you train no less than 3 hours a day 5 days a week and 4 on Saturday will make you eligible to test in 3 1/2 years. If you learn TKD and HKD (real HKD not a watered down version) then you should tack that on to the time requirement for 1st Dan in TKD. This should put you at between 6 1/2 to 8 years, unless you are putting in the time required PLUS the time required for TKD. But this would require you to be at the studio for 4-6 hours a day virtually every day training in both.
The big problem with most TKD/HKD studios that claim to teach both Is that what they’re actually doing our teaching HKD based grab techniques and everything else is TKD. Or they teach a limited number of each Katie techniques based upon limited knowledge and understanding and the rest tends to be TKD. I have never once had somebody who is God working in a TKD studio for HKD what I would honor their black belt in mind. They just do not know enough. As well, we fight differently, we punch and kick it differently, we train differently. Our training, the way we train is required for the way we fight and move and think.
So whatever you want to study just be honest with yourself while you’re doing it and what you want to get out of it as well as what you’re actually getting out of it.

I liked the experiential, factual basis of your comments - nice to see in a thread on the internet, where it's typically kind of rare.
I do not claim significant martial arts expertise, so what follows is just opinion and I'll admit to the possibility of being in error. But based solely on this video, it looks to me like hapkido offers a mix of excellent athletic training, training in some genuine self defense techniques, and also training in very showy techniques that may have little real-world applicability. Krav Maga, on the other hand, looks heavily focused on practical self defense, with athletic training perhaps being secondary and training of showmanship being next to nonexistent.
That is my first impression, but it's based solely on this video and a limited background myself. It's helpful to have comments from someone of your background provided for a different perspective.

For me, Krav Maga was the obvious choice to learn, simply because it does not matter that I'm a small guy. It does not require you to have "honor," it is all about survival at the cost of the attacker's wellbeing. You can take them down with style, but what matters to me is taking them down as quickly and effectively as possible. All I care about is going home at the end of the day.

I"ve been practicing martial arts for over 50 years and Hap Ki Do for over 35 and Hap Ki DO is the most advanced fighting system there is. It encompasses everything. Why be limited to just what Krav Maga is? Learn as many techniques as you can only then can you understand what's ideally suited for you and your capabilities. You'll have a much better understanding of the body dynamics. Like Bruce Lee said in The Tao of Jeet Kune Do take what works best for you and perfect that and how can you do that if you limit yourself? Lol! Honor? Honor has no place in self defense only survival.

Krav Mags was originally from Hapkido, it was introduced by a Korean worker (Hapkido master) of the Daewoo Construction Company.
His students learned Hapkido it was in Middle East in the early 1970s (1973?). One of his student, Israeli man added boxing etc. and then change name Hapkido to Krav Maga.

Krav Maga is a synthesis of techniques designed for self defense on the street. It is a rapid reaction of the body. Hapkido is intelligent, each technique and each strike have a reason to be. Hapkido was designed to fight and defend with people with no knowledge and with people who know martial arts. It would prepare your body and your mind as well and how to stay calm under difficult situations.

Tai Ji mostly for health. Karate for self improvement and boxing of sorts for entertainment. Each style can be used in combat given circumstances , even Tai Ji but you need to know the purpose behind creation.

I've never done krav, but from what i've heard, it's less about style or technique, or anything like that, and more about being able to respond effectively to certain types of scenarios. They have drills and stuff, but they don't seem to focus on things like techniques or combos really like other martial arts do. It's about self defense usually more than trained combat. You don't work under the concept that either you or your opponent are skilled unarmed combatants. As a matter of fact i've been led to believe that one of the core principles is that you don't really try to have any preconceptions about the exact scenario you would use krav. It's supposed to be universal preparedness, or something akin to that.

Both Aikido and Tae Kwon Do stem from Diato Ryu Aiki jujutsu and the founders first official student when he returned to Korea from Japan was a Judo black belt.
