You almost forget how good Southall was. Three saves in the space of about 5 seconds from Rush at one point in the second half, then just picks his cap up and gets on with it. Ten years later, he was still doing the business for us in the FA Cup Final win. What a legend.

Everton were the current champions and these were the two best teams in the land imo. Liverpool went on an incredible run after this match and I think they remained unbeaten for the rest of the season - culminating in the illustrious 'Double' win of Division one Champions and FA Cup winners. We were so much better than Liverpool that season, yet the bleeders won the double. As others have said it was down to big Neville getting injured. Hated the Wembley final, no contrition or humility from the Reds fans even though they knew we had been the better over the season. One even ruffled my hair as we left the stadium, I was very close to twatting him in the gob!

I've always said the factors on us missing out on the double that season was Liverpool winning 11 out of 12 after we beat them at Anfield, as you say Big Nev getting injured for the run-in and the hugely influential Peter Reid only playing 15 league games all season due to injury. That criminal defeat at Oxford so late in the season also has a lot to answer for.

What an advert for the great rivalry between the two best teams in the mid 1980s. Liverpool went on an amazing run after this defeat to pip Everton for the league title.
At Wembley Howard Kendall made a rare mistake by recalling Derek Mountfield and Paul Bracewell in the final, after they had missed many games through injury. Kevin Richardson and Alan Harper who rarely had bad games would have given the blues a better balanced team. I recall the game and Everton were a bit over run in second half after being comfortable until the Gary Stevens misplaced pass to Molby that changed the game.
Selling both Lineker and Richardson were major blunders that started the decline in the late 1980s.

Back in the days when matches against Liverpool were 10mins football and 80mins Liverpool players surrounding the referee. We won by playing-they won by playing dirty and that's the difference between us and them.EFC

Liverpool won 4 champions leagues in 9 years by… complaining? To *continental* referees?

      SKa-tt9nm,
Dont forget the two UEFA Cups to go with the 4 European Cups. 6 European trophies in just over a decade.
These Everton twonks think they were better than Liverpool that season, despite losing twice to them, finishing with less points, scoring less goals and suffering more defeats. It's hilarious.

Is there a possibility in your mind that in the last 40 years, they’ve figured out that diving at peoples feet - while brave and exciting - isn’t nearly as effective as deflecting shots with your legs?

@@SKa-tt9nm I'm afraid you are talking rubbish. I'm not talking about shot-stopping, I'm talking about trying to dispossess an attacker in close proximity to the keeper - in the example I'm talking about the player didn't get to shoot BECAUSE Southall dived on the ball. How do you 'deflect' a shot that didn't happen, pray tell?
Coming out feet first trying to tackle when a) they aren't very good at tackling and b) they have no fucking idea where the ball will go even if they win the tackle. I would have thought being able to use your hands is considered an advantage, but there you go...
