      It does work well for most, but I actually suggest 45/45 normally. 40/40 has a risk of triggering migraines for people with certain light sensitivities, ones many who have them may not be aware of before getting their decks as the last common devices that set them off were certain crts.

    Running GTA 4 with DXVK on any OS will improve performance massively. Biggest problem with it is that the bottleneck in the game is the DX9 api it's self. Good stuff and welcome to the party! One important thing: I would highly recommend learning about the "Golden 40" that leverages the 40Hz capabilities of the Deck's display. Inevitably, you'll often end up worrying if a recent release can run at 60FPS on there. The Golden 40 would massively help here: Due to the fact you can lower the panel's refresh rate to 40Hz through the Quick Action Menu, you are able to go for 40FPS instead of 30. Why you may ask? Despite a 10FPS additional payload to the Deck's graphics APU, 40 FPS is right in the middle between 30 and 60 FPS in terms of frame pacing - meaning a nearly-60 FPS experience. Try it out! If you want to see this in action, feel free to give an older video of mine a shot, where I tried to explain this comprehensively.

      It also depends on the game, some games you can do a stable 45, others a stable 50 - 55, all of those can be worth it. I personally played nier automata with mostly a 52fps lock.

    • @deckverse
      @deckverse Рік тому

      @@qlum But the returns in input latency and frame pacing are not always worth the trade. For instance, the jump in both from 45 to 50 is smaller than from 40 to 45. So at some point you begin to trade in battery life and fan noise versus just a really small amount of improvement here. In the end, again, it's still a thing of personal preference and a nice proof for how flexible both Deck and SteamOS are! :)

Also I would be happy with 30FPS on one of these, plus lowered settings (and possibly power limited settings) in order to conserve battery power, since getting under 2 hours of battery life on a full charge is far from ideal, and pulling a lot of current from the battery will not help its overall longevity; I wouldn't want to be replacing Steam Deck batteries every 12-18 months!

    The reason GTA 4 runs amazing on deck is because by default Linux uses dxvk to translate dx9 calls to Vulkan, which fixes most of the stuttering and frametime issues.
    This is also why Elden Ring got fixed on Linux before windows.
    Also would love to see more steam deck content, or linux gaming in general as there are some really neat tricks with proton that can fix some notorious pc games.

    Saints Row 2 runs better on the Steam Deck than it does on my 3060 laptop, even if I drop the resolution to 720p it still drops really low and that's with GotR installed.
    Might need to mess around with DXVK on this game, or just play it on my Deck as I love this game.
    I played this thing on PS3, I can handle low framerates.
    I grabbed a 512 for myself along with 3 512 cards, already filled up 2 of them, other one's for Windows stuff for whenever I decide to run Windows through a USB and play stuff that way.
    Actually played Mario Kart Wii that way with a DolphinBar, ran great.
    It's a great system, it's weird because some games like Skyrim I couldn't get into but I can play it on the Deck, makes no sense but it just clicks and I can play the game.
    Hope you enjoy messing with yours, it's great for some older titles, even some newer ones like Days Gone run pretty well if you don't mind having next to no battery life.

So far everything i've tried runs perfectly, couldn't be happier with my purchase.

    I'd enjoy more videos on this bad boi. I've been playing GTAIV on the Steam Deck myself because whatever I did on PC didn't quite feel/look satisfying. On Steam Deck tho? No issues at all. I turned out view distance, traffic density and the last option too (forgot what it was) and put everything on high. FPS sort of jumps around at certain places but honestly I found that there's no point uncapping the fps ever (unless you go into desktop mode and play CS:GO at it, but if the fps dips a lot then I'd cap it too, maybe at 100 in game). You lose battery for no reason really, I personally can't see much if any difference in smoothness, but then when it jumps from 80 to 60, the frame pacing goes out the window. Worth mentioning that Steam Deck's frame pacing is excellent if the hardware can keep up with the game, it does feel like some games play better on the Deck than on PC. For that reason, I am (was) playing Bully on the Deck because quite frankly the 30fps on small screen with excellent frame pacing is... fine... It really is, it feels 5 times as smooth as on my PC with the 60fps fix that would crash all the time anyway. GTA IV gets to 50fps on my settings sometimes when driving really fast through the bridge onto the 2nd island especially, but also in the city, the further I get into the game the more dips I notice so I locked the game to 50fps and it really does still feel great (was on 55 lock for a long time which felt no different to 60 but more dips appeared). It's a great device, I love it.

  • @airspeedmph
    @airspeedmph Рік тому

    Not 100% sure, but judging from those black spots where reflections/windows/etc should be, you are playing the Linux port and not through DXVK. The Linux port was done by Virtual Programming and uses their proprietary tech. They also ported other several Saints Row releases. In any case, the port is basically the original Windows game with a compatibility layer on top, somewhat similar with what Proton does. One rather big difference in contrast to default Proton is that the old Linux port use OpenGL (there was no Vulkan at the time). So it would be interesting to see the difference between the two, Linux port vs Proton.
    There is another method to run old DirectX 9 games on Linux, using Gallium Nine, which is an open source implementation of said API, but is seldom used these days after D9VK/DXVK took off. Saint Row 2 in particular ran very well with it, but is more cumbersome to set up and use.
