    Thank you Luke for the full review! Now we have to design the upgrade of the 3CS trigger. It will be "6CS trigger" in order to cover the three cold spots :)

      No problem! Haha maybe the whole drum should just be filled with cones? It's weird that it's so accentuated on the TD-50 compared to on the Mimic, not sure why that is. If they update the TD-50 to accommodate their own 3 cone triggers, I have a feeling it will iron it out. Fingers crossed they do so, and soon!

    Thanks for the review. Hopefully we'll see more companies fully support 3 cone design. You still can't beat the digital snare and ride, they work really well in SD3. I too noticed weird trigger behavior when running my old TD30 DP128S and even my VH13 thru the TD50. I'm sure all of our concerns will be addressed...in the next flagship module and new pads! lol

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому +1

      You're welcome, thanks for watching! Yeah, the digital snare really does win out against pretty much any other pad. Interesting that you had similar issues with your pads from the 30. Fingers crossed that a VAD floor tom preset sorts it out. I think it's probably really just a case of manufacturers tweaking to accommodate these designs!

    I really do think general triggering is slightly different from the TD30 to the TD50 modules, and I'm not sure why.

      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, I had to rebuild a DIY trigger that used to work perfectly with my Octapad when I got my TD-50 - it was randomly triggering rimshots on the head. I know that can be an issue with piezo polarity and something to do with Positional Sensing, but I've read accounts of other people having the same issue going from the 30 to the 50, even when their PS worked perfectly on the 30. Weird.

      @exci6198 4 роки тому +1

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Ι tested the TD-50 promptly with my DIY triggers and I was indeed getting random rimshots from hitting the center. What I did was change the preset from a regular drum (PD-XXX) to something generic - I think it might have been "pad 1" or something like that. Then the rimshots stopped.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      @@exci6198 Yeah, I remember using the PDX-8 preset and getting the same results as you did with Pad 1 - it stopped. I was trying to get the positional sensing working though so I needed to use a setting that supported it. Can't remember if any of the Pad 1/2/3 settings support PS or not but at the time it was very frustrating haha!

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop Ah, gotcha. I'm only using these triggers for my toms so I didn't care enough to check for PS.

    You should check out the Convertible Percussion triggers. Inexpensive and working very well for me on the 14" snare I made. Simple but well made.

    Thanks Luke for the review....in the video you mention that there are other choices "off the shelf" for a 3 zone trigger system. I like the Gear Drum 3CS trigger but I am in Canada and it is a bit complicated ordering from Italy - not to mention the exchange, duty and cost of shipping. What are the options for a former Yamaha ekit-guy who wants a 3 zone snare drum? I am using a Strike module.
    Gear drum are really on it with some breakthrough products - I am impressed but need to checkout the options.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  4 роки тому

      Hey! When I was talking about off-the-shelf trigger solutions, I was grouping pretty much all trigger systems into that (as Gear Drum offer a few different types of triggers). When it comes to off-the-shelf 3-cone triggers (not 3 zone, just to clarify), you've got the ATV aDrums Artist snare or the ATV xD-P13 snare/tom pad or the new Roland VAD 14" floor toms when they eventually come out. I've seen a couple of other smaller companies around doing 3-cone triggers in the same style/capacity as Gear Drum but I'm not sure on all of the availability across each country, unfortunately. ATV are probably the best bet if you wanted to play it safe with a pre-built solution.

    Great video Luke. I would love to see an update video of this gear drum trigger with the Td50x using PDA120/ PDA140 setting which also uses the 3 cone trigger. Do you expect to do another review anytime soon? Cheers 😀

      The results haven't been a great deal better using the VAD presets, so I don't really see the need to make a video about it, to be honest! It's a shame, I was hoping that would fix the issue, or at least improve on it!

    I designed my own.. Center mounting the sensor is the only way for me.... You just have to tighten the head.... a lot.
    No positional sensing is a deal breaker (for me)..
    I have found that the module compares the "bleed over" from the RIM piezo when the head is hit, to create the "position sensing" if the head sensor "sees" a hit so close to the trigger that the "rim" didn't pick it up...BAM hot spot hit. By adding another piezo to the rim section, there is a better chance of even a close hit to the head sensor is still "heard" by the rim sensor. this small amount of bleed over stops the hot spotting.
    So one center "head" piezo 27mm and TWO "rim" piezos, 27mm one mounted to the center focal point of the trigger assembly, and another mounted very near where I do my rim shots.
    I play reggae style music, and the rim and position strikes are working great with this set up. My hot spot is very small now. like a 1/4" dot in the center of the snare. Before, had a 3" circle of hot-spot mess..

    Did I understand it right, that you can use these triggers without damaging the shell of the original acoustic drum? So I could thoretically buy an expensive acoustic drumset from one of the big companies, remove the top head, put the trigger in, connect the trigger cable via the vent hole, put a mesh head on and voilà, edrum conversion is ready?

      It may well work with the Strike Pro, I just haven't got one to try it out. I believe a few people have had issues getting good rim response with different pads on the Strike, but I don't know if this would be affected the same way or not, might just take someone knowing how to tweak it correctly!

    Hey Luke I found a company in the usa that makes an electronic rim-riser for cross stick, which then will effectively make for a 3 zone snare drum. Maybe you could take a look at it and see if it meets your testing standards. Link Here: www.rimriserusa.com/e_rr.html

      Thanks for the suggestion! I've had a quick look into it, the availability in the UK doesn't look amazing and the Amazon reviews aren't looking too hot either haha! But I do like the concept (sort of like using a BT-1 but with a metal rim segment rather than rubber) so I'll see if I can find much else about them - not really in a position to take a gamble at the minute so would probably need to see more user experiences before going for it.

      @@TheeDrumWorkshop - Hey Luke, I ended up buying one of these eRim-Risers and now have it installed but still having some challenges getting it working with my Strike module. I wrote to Rim Riser for some basic settings so we will see how they do and I would be happy to give you an update. My objective with this addition is to have crosstick (3 zone) snare drum with my Strike kit. Just wondering if you have any suggestions for alternatives if this doesn't work - I am in Canada. Those sections that I do talk over aren't really the "test" parts though, they're pretty much just B-roll footage to have something on the screen other than my face. The intro, outro and dynamics test at 11:44 are the proper test sections. I'll look at either muting the other parts in future or just using different B-roll! Thanks!
