    Just climbed this over the weekend and as others have said, this video makes it look way scarier! Don't let it stop you from doing this amazing hike! It was beautiful and so worth it!

    As a person who A) has a fairly strong fear of insecure heights (meaning anything I could fall off of and die) and B) has successfully hiked and summited Mount Katahdin via the Knife's Edge: I can say with complete honesty that this video makes it look WAY scarier than anything I encountered in reality. I was on this very same trail and navigated these exact passages. As you can see, there is not much choice in an alternate path once you're up there, so I did not go some other way...... So as awesome as this video is, don't let it scare you into thinking that the Knife's Edge is too much for you. It was a challenging climb at times, but it was also so much fun and very exhilarating without being prohibitively scary--even for someone with a measurable fear of heights. Go do it.

      Thanks for this! I'm planning on hiking this trail in a couple weeks, and while I'm not really afraid of heights, it certainly does look intimidating. Also, I've done a bit of research. Since the late 1800's, there has only been one fatality from someone falling from the Knife's Edge, and it was in '86. That being said, I am SO excited to climb Katahdin!!

      The fact that people call this a "knife edge" is pretty laughable.

    • @jswjimmy
      @jswjimmy 7 років тому +2

      It looks to have been recorded on a action camera which often have fish eye lenses so they can see more "action". It makes everything look more scary/fast then it actually is however. It's why some GoPro footage looks unbelievable; the perspective is warped too much to look real in some cases.

    Wow! I climbed Katahdin 40 some years ago. The fog was so thick that I could only see a few feet in front of me . I had no idea that it looked like this until now. The blazes were about all that I could see. I thank God for them now that I can see what my surroundings looked like.

      Yea, so I'm sitting here seriously considering cancelling my thru-hike over this video and thank god for comments like yours and Michael Green's. Does it look more terrifying because of the way the GoPro bends the image? I have no idea but thank you for this comment.

      Its all depth perception based on the camera angle/position. I can firmly say its not as intense as this makes it seem. And i summited this via the Knifes edge after a 220 mile thru hike in 2014 :)

    From Wikipedia
    The most famous hike to the summit goes along Knife Edge, a glacial arête which traverses the ridge between Pamola Peak and Baxter Peak. There have been more than 60 deaths on Katahdin since 1933 including October 8 and 9, 2020.

      Connie Schulte yes. Always follow those blazes. NEVER try to leave them and descend the side of Knife's Edge no matter how much easier and faster it looks to get back down to Chimney Pond. You will fail. If you survive your mistake, there will almost surely be a rescue mission involved and if they decide you were knowingly foolhardy and ill-prepared you may get charged for that rescue. It is a BIG no-no.

    • @kenjohns3614

      Any trail that connects to/ with the Appalachian Trail ( also known as an “approach trail”, shelter trail, to water trail) is marked with blue blazes. Leaving the AT to any named trail will also show the new trail’s particular symbol and the blue blaze together. Within a mile or so the markings will change over to whatever symbol that represents that trail.

    У меня,60, с сыном,18, в один день рождения и мы решили его отметить на вершине горы Катахдин,которая всегда перед глазами в сотни километров от нашего дома.Если б мы только знали,что собой представляет двухкилометровый хребет - Лезвие ножа. Бедная супруга,56, протерла джинсы кое- где до дыр, но мы его покорили и сделали свое фото на вершине. Октябрь 2010
    I, 60, and her son, 18, in one's birthday and we decided to celebrate it on the top of Mount Katahdin, which is always before the eyes of hundreds of kilometers away from our house. If we only knew what a two-kilometer ridge - blade knife. Poor wife, 56, rubbed jeans here and there to the holes, but we conquered and made their photo at the top. October -2010.

    My top 5 scariest trails in the US. #1 - Angel's Landing (Zion Nat'l. Park - Utah) #2 The Knife Edge on Mt. Katahdin - #3 Precipice Trail (Bar Harbor, Maine) - #4 Beehive Trail (Bar Harbor, Me.) #5 Garden Wall (Glacier Nat'l. Park Montana) Any one of these trails, you must pay close attention while hiking or you will die! Any of these trails, I will say, will be the thrill of your lifetime and you always remember them.

      In my opinion, Garden Wall shouldn't be in this list at all. I hiked GW twice and I never felt scared at all. Even Precipice should NOT be in this list because you always have something to hold.

    It's not nearly as dangerous as the GoPro makes it look. What some people and guide books describe as vertical drops are, in all actuality, closer to gentle slopes. I don't know why people insist on making things out to be worse than they really are (I'm not insinuating the person who posted this video did any such thing). It's a beautiful hike, even if it's not particularly exclusive to expert hikers.
