I really appreciate your taking the time to compare the two lids. I started shopping for a better insulated coffee mug than my REI plastic coffee mug with lid. I've escalated to deciding to get the Yeti 20 oz Rambler with handle and Stronghold lid. I've been using a 16 oz Nalgene when I needed a tight closure, but this will meet both my around the house and travel needs. Now to see if I can find someone who has the yellow in stock.
Thank you for making this vid. I'm going to buy the Yeti Rambler with the stronghold lid because it can fit a large smoothie straw when you remove the slider. I didn't know that was possible until I watched your video.
@@Hopeyouloveit Yeah that's what s great about her video, she actually demonstrates the leakage in a real world scenario. Also, there's some vacuum which is created as it dribbles to nothing; then, as she uprights the mug again, it releases the slught vacuum created. So when she repours, it is a bigger initial dribble again. it shows the real world case of it rolling around in your lunch bag, losing the vacuum, sucking in air again and releasing more fluid. ( Could I perhaps describe that more awkwardly?)
@@mikemotorbike4283 I'm glad you found it helpful, it was really hard to decide when I was buying it as there was nothing out there, so I thought if it helped me, maybe it would help others! 🙂
Thanks Tiffany - yes I agree it’s pretty easy to use. I will warn you that the 30oz size, when full, is heavy. Even my husband commented on it. Also, don’t over tighten in the worry about preventing leaks. I filled mine with hot tea and immediately tightened the lid probably too much (the first time I used it) and I couldn’t unscrew it. I needed to get help! You can see in the video I now just tighten but don’t go hard and it’s still very leakproof.
Just thought I would suggest a solution to using a straw with your strong hold lid. I use a jumbo smoothie straw with mine. Of course, it’s not leak proof when the straw is in place but if you want to use your travel mug with a straw, just grab a disposable smoothie straw. I even wash my straws in the dishwasher
Interesting idea! I suppose those new reusable silicone smoothie straws may be a good option as you can reuse them and wash them, and they are a bit softer so you can put them through the drink opening in the lid easier than the hard plastic/metal reusable ones too!
Yes this reply, I just learned there is a recall on the stronghold lid to replace one with better flow. I thought my ice cubes were making my sips so small when it’s just physics.
This lid is designed to be leakproof. When the mag slider is fully open, it prevents air from entering the mug. To allow liquid to flow more freely, slightly close the mag slider from its fully open position-about 1/2 mm.
I think the regular mag slide was fine. I’ve had them fall and not pop open, yeah if it falls to far it will pop open but I was willing to take that risk to have the mouth hole where I wanted it. I’m hoping my o-ring loosens up because it’s to tight to go 90 from the handle right now I’m like at a goofy side poor even with the 1/4 turn you talked about
After using it for a year, I have also had some times where it's leaked a bit, but it's not consistent, and it's definitely a lot less than the normal lid
Stronghold lid leaks at the bottom of the lid where it meets the cup itself. I've tightened it as much as I can and it still leaks my drink down the side of my cup. Does anyone else have this problem? I've had it happen on two Travelers mugs now with stronghold lids.
My dumbass couldn’t figure out how to open the stronghold, was pushing it with all my might and it wouldn’t budge. Didn’t realize I had to push down ever so slightly to get it to move lol
Have a few diffrent yeti mugs and water bottles and a cooler . I would say this is my most used mug . Sure it doesn’t let you sip as much coffee but when my coffee gets knocked over at work or hit a bump in the loader then it’s nice to not have to worry about leaks or my coffee spraying out . Had that happen with hot apple cider . Upgraded to a stronghold and definitely a game changer . Yeti should have done this from the start
Great review !! I was undecided as to which one to get and there is no info anywhere as to the different tops. This video helped make a sound decision for me & the fam. WE APPRECIATE IT !!!
Thanks for your comparison I'll prob cheap out and get the magslider non handle version (but in 20oz so not as big easier to hold without the handle) For the straw, you could prob just pop the slider thingy out and feed the straw straight through the hole. Prob not as spill/splash proof as the accessory lid, but could do the trick
The only thing I do not like the strong hold is the such small hole the breath hole is to let air into the cup when drinking vs the other cup. I have been debating on drilling the hole out one 2 sizes larger
Got the wife one of the stronghold cups and the flow sucks out of it. Glad I'm hearing more are having the issue because I was going to get one but now I will shop for something other than Yeti
Sorry to hear you’re having that problem! I have had it happen to me a couple of times but when I looked at it carefully I hadn’t quite gotten the slider open all the way and the underside part of the slider was impeding the flow. Check that out in case it’s happening to yours.
@@rondosa1 That is what I was thinking. Even took it apart thinking something was blocking it. Got this for her 3-4 months ago now and it is still the same. I hate getting a drink out of it and will not buy myself one
I just bought mine after a snappy gift mishap. It's great, i use it for soccer practice since my bottles sometimes fall in or outside my bag. Barely leaks for me.
Can't get the screwtop lid to align liker yours does. it angles to the right by the handle. Also after putting coffee in it, it got stuck and wouldn't open
Did you end up sorting it out to get it over by a 1/4 turn? Also, when I screw the lid on tight immediately after pouring hot tea in it, I've had it get stuck on me too a couple of times.
Sorry that happened to you. I do find that sometimes if I overtighten it, or if I put hot tea in it, tighten it down and then try and open it soon after, it can be hard for me to open it, so I've had to get my husband to try. I'm not sure what happens from a physics perspective lol but it also doesn't help that the lid is so large on the 30oz model that it's hard to get a good grip unless you have bigger/meaty hands :)
Thank you! So I can say that on occasion it seems that you can crush the little black inner sealing ring on the lid and it'll give you a very fine leak - if I clean that ring and dry it off and don't screw on the lid overly tight so that I'm crushing it, it usually fixes it. It's almost like the ring gets out of shape if it gets dragged out of place while you're screwing it on. See if you can give that a try.
No, they are not interchangeable as the Stronghold one is shaped a bit differently and it goes together with the under-piece, whereas the normal one is just a slider on the top. You can kind of see the differences when I take them apart in the video 👍
No they are actually the same according to the official YETI specs, it's just the shape of it that varies slightly, making the Stronghold one taller, you can see it when they are side by side in the video. I think the diameter of the top part is a bit smaller, so they made it a bit taller to keep capacity the same, but I'd have to measure.
yeah its a huge dealbreaker for me. My lunchbag tips over driving to work on the passenger seat. I tip it over on my shirt awkwardly cradling it in my arms as I manhandle several things at once getting into the car. Luxury problems I know, but dang all I ask as a reward for going to work is my coffee. And to show up in clean pants.
Thanks for the comparison! Just bought one with a strong hold lid and I find that my coffee spills through it… pretty significantly. The bottles are advertised as spill/leak proof, it’s on the tags when I bought it. So I’m kinda disappointed but maybe my seal is off or something. I’m glad it’s not spilling for you though. If you know anything about why mine is spilling let me know!
Have you played around with the slider, to make sure that a) the two pieces are really properly seated together and b) that you're fully closing it? I've had a few times that I thought it was closed, but it had about 1cm that I had to kinda push it to snap properly shut....
You compared 1 piece of overpriced trash to another piece of overpriced trash. Swell video! I do like yeti for the fact that it makes it really easy to point out the morons amongst us... Just like patagonia...
Thank god , finally someone made a simple to the point video on the differences. Thank you!

haha what a strangely wholesome compliment

I determined the same thing from the video. I love my smoothie straw in my old version. Looking forward to this new one with a handle!

Great review!! I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Yeti with the handle seems to be the best one and least leak proof on the market.

I like everything about the stronghold other than the smaller hole which allows half the water flow compared the the regular magslider.
Agree, the flow is less, though I've gotten used to it by now

when you take of the cap part of the stronghold lid you can put a straw through it, but it will move around a bit and leak.
In my experience, they both leak if held upside down or sideways , the stronghold lid just leaks a little less.
After using it for a year, I have also had some times where it's leaked a bit, but it's not consistent, and it's definitely a lot less than the normal lid
My stronghold lid leaks with hot drinks, but entirely leakproof with cold or room temperature liquid.

anyone knows if this works for the 42 oz rambler?
Is the 30oz accessories can fit to this 35oz? For example the lid… stronghold / magslider
Thanks this was helpful!
I’m my strong hold lid there is an extra rubber piece on the lid that is making me crazy. I can’t figure out how to put it back together. Help!
Can you use the Stronghold lid on the Tumbler?
No you cannot - the Stronghold lid is threaded and the tumbler is not so they won't work together.

My question is does it hold ice /temp longer
From my experience they are equal -- the base mug is the same, it's just about the functionality of the lide design that differs!
Is the actual magnet slider the same and interchangeable?
No, they are not interchangeable as the Stronghold one is shaped a bit differently and it goes together with the under-piece, whereas the normal one is just a slider on the top. You can kind of see the differences when I take them apart in the video 👍
