  • Hi!! 🌷 For this weeks study topic I chose Edgar Degas and the dark story behind his ballerina paintings. I've recently been fascinated by ballet and it's story, so Degas being famous for his ballerinas sparked my interest and I was surprised about what I learned of the truth behind them.

I have a different perspective which I hope will make you more at ease with Degas' art.
The whole point was he was _documenting_ the voyeurism and abuse and not _idealizing_ poverty and young girl's lives in the same way that the establishment were. Take a look at William Bouguereau's 'Before the Bath' to see what the types of work the French Academy were hanging on their walls for 'the male gaze.'
He and Edouard Manet painted 'real life' and that is what so outraged the public and the establishment.
The reason Manet's 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergere' shocked people was because it was calling out their hypocrisy - the young woman looks careworn as she is approached by yet 'another customer'; her gaze is pointed straight at us. We are the voyeur.
There is also very telling references to the lives of young ballerinas in Tolstoy's Anna Karenina (read about Prince Oblonsky).
