This is a common failure on the E46. If your key just spins without opening the door then the door lock barrel is worn out or broken. BMW Dealerships charge $500 to replace it. Shops charge up to $300. What they don't tell you is the parts cost $30 & takes 10 easy minutes to install!
On Bay type in the search bar: 'BMW 3 E46 Door Lock Barrel Repair KIT'. You will see a Seller is named 'regulatorfix'. He ships quickly. I paid $32 total on Friday afternoon and the kit came Monday morning.

i had the same problem with my bmw e46 .. it was a very hard time .. There were many attempts to open the door or door glass .. ufortunately I couldn't find any solution except to break the door glass

You have to use a air bag to separate the door a little and then use the long reach tool to push the unlock button in the middle of the dashboard, then with the same long reach tool grave the lock inside the door and pull it twice and then the door will open.

I believe he is replying to being locked out, period, and Mario is 100% correct. From experience I can also add be gentle how far you separate the window from the jam with the air bag wedge. If you over do it you will next be replacing the window regulator (break pieces off that make it no workie).

This just happened to me...I was still able to open the boot manually with the key...pull away the boot lining against the back seat and there is a hole....you need a very thin person to squeeze through the hole...start the ignition and voila...unlock all the doors!

I own 10 BMW up to date and bmw is made that if you lock the car with a certain way it'll have to be unlock the same . It'll disable central lock or if you trigger the alarm with one key the other one will not be able to do anything . Even if you get in the car and press the central lock nothing will happend. I had lock my keys in my 7 series and for them to be able to unlock it they had to actually have to hit the button on the remote . If they unlock it by using the central lock nothing happened. Anyone that have problems with these cars feel free to ask . I know these cars inside out . The ews system is very particular .

Hey, I locked my e46 yesterday (using the door lock) and today the car will not unlock with any of the two keys I have. And the key fob doesn't work in any of the keys (maybe dead key battery). So when I put the key in the door lock they just spin around, and I cant get in the car. Do you have any ideas?

Johnny Boy is your a coupe or 4 door with fold down seat ?go thru the trunk...thats a common problem

Johnny Boy check the trunk if the battery dead...usaullly when battery dead that's also a cause .

I tried to open the trunk with the key but it just turns something like 90 degrees and nothing happens. It's the convertible model.

thats the most simple thing dude,,,,all you have to do is...open the remote and replace the battery...you can go to pepboys auto parts..battery cost 8.00$ and they replaced it for you...i got a 323ci and i did it like that 2 weeks ago

I got the battery on eBay years ago so I don't remember the seller. I got a whole new key at BMW Tarrytown NYC for $166 plus tax

In those cars the battery in the key can't be replased it charges every time you start your car if the battery gose bad you have to change the key you might look at the fuse or relays make sure they're all good the battery shouldn't have to be replaced

If you watched the video, you’d have clearly seen and heard that the key turns freely and nothing happens. Did you not see the key turn left repeatedly.... jfc pay attention

My mate had his car same problom, I managed to remove his locking barrel, with his key inserted in it, once it comes out, this can be a problom as there is a retainer behind the barrel that stops the barrel coming out, with a bit of force here and there, it eventually came out, (beware it does cause damage to surrounding areas) then with a torch had a look inside, there is a square recessed part if you had a wide bladed screw driver that can fit this peg, you can turn it and open the door, his key fob would only lock the car but not unlock, so I am still not sure where the fuses are so that I can check

I know it's been 9 years since this comment but I just wanted to say that this advice saved me a call to the locksmith. With the cylinder removed, my largest flat head screwdriver acted like the lock mechanism and unlocked my door.

It's easy if your key fob works hold the unlock button until windows roll down at least on both my 2001 and 2006 X5's

Plz help,
I hv problem with self leveling suspension ,at first the air compressor was not working,so i bought second hand on ebay and replace it,it works for one week and then it stops working again,so i want to know if the problem is with the suspension airbag or is there another problem with sensors which is preventing the air compressor from working,and secondly do i have to replace the air compressor again,is it possible to repair the old compressor because i think the solenoid or maybe the relay is not working,because when i connect the compressor directly to power,it works.

I could not get in my car, nor could triple A. COuld not go thru the trunk being that the back seats do not fold down. I had to resort to breaking the window to get in. Question do you need to replace the whole cylinder which would require a new key? Trying to avoid that. I would love to keep my current key but replace the parts that are broken...any suggestions? Is there a way to replace the cylinder and program my currehnt key?

No you do not have to replace the entire cylinder. Just then broken bits inside. You can buy them for cheap off eBay.

BMW makes good cars but not good keys. When they make keys they glue the case tight, solder a replaceable battery to the circuit and don't tell consumers their key fob battery will one day die and you will have to spend over a $166 on a new entire key that needs 1 hour labour time to diagnose plus 1 hour labor time to code to your car. It's really bad customer service. Good thing eBay and the internet has people that will replace the battery for much cheaper but you have to mail your key and wait.

This just happened to me as well. I had to unlock the trunk with the alarm going off, then entered the driver seat through the rear to start the engine in order to turn the alarm off.

funny thing about this is when that lock goes bad and starts spinning the key battery dies like right after! It always seem to be the case. Which is how everyone seem to get stuck. I think BMW did this purposely to sell individual replacement keys to customers for $200! good luck Jordain!

James Waye yeah sorry my response was not more positive but these cars are like Fort Knox when it comes to breaking in. what a lot of people end up doing is breaking the rear quarter panel glass (which your car insurance replaces for free) and getting in.
