A sub is for stealth hit and run operations, a warship is built to take a hit especially around the waterline of the hull where the armor is thickest. Imagine an axe blade being dropped on a soda can, basically the same outcome.
At the end, you are speaking about the U.S.S. Indianapolis. About 300 sailors were killed in the initial attack and the ship was below the waves in about 11 minutes. 900 sailors went into the water, most without life rafts or life vests. Only 316 were rescued because the Navy was not looking for them. They were the ship that delivered the Hiroshima plutonium core. The mission was deemed so secret that they were being reported IN PORT somewhere else while they delivered it. They sank so fast that no S.O.S. was sent and they were lucky to have been picked up by a patrol plane.
Captain McVay was indeed court-martialed for the sinking, the only Captain to be court-martialed for their vessel sinking in all of WWII. He unfortunately took his own life afterward. His men who survived loved him, but he received a lot of mail from the families of the sailors who died blaming him. He was posthumously cleared of all wrong doing.
I recommend Wendigoon's video on the subject if you are interested. I actually have book written with direct quotes of the survivors entitled "Only 316 Survived".
18:30 Being on a ship at sea with no moonlight is something else it is so dark you can not see your hand in front of your face sometimes. The stars and constellations are a sight to behold though. On the opposite side of that spectrum if it is a full moon then it is almost like day.
Submarine vet here it’s always great seeing these stories get passed around.
If you’d like to learn more Fat electrician has another video about the USS barb and how it sunk a train.
If you’d like to have an idea of what modern submarines might be capable of the video Submarines are way scarier than you think by John Harris
And if you’d like a sneak peek on what it’s like to be on a submarine while at sea Smarter Everyday has a great series where he boards a submarine while near the North Pole.
ya for the recommendations! And thank you for your service!

I like to think Ramage did it because he was like, “Hey, nice one, you almost got me!”
