Thank you for this video! I think I’ve watched it once a year, for many years now. You always help me get it made right.
Thanks! Happy New Year!
On new years eve, My family tries to finish all our fridge left overs before the new year comes. My mom always used to say, "to leave the past behind, you have to eat it first.". Haha she is a funny lady. :)
Nicole Rok your mom sounds so cute
Linda Vang - This is a video remake, part of my project to update my older videos that were flagged for the music that I used. It also gives me a chance to improve the dish, so the recipe is a bit more developed and uses less salt than my original one.
make suchi :(
آخر حبه Sushi is a Japanese dish. The closest Korean equivalent would be "Kim Bop" which has a completely different taste. You should go to her blog and check out her videos because I'm pretty sure that she has done a video on that.
Jakathera thank you :)
We'll be making it for new year! Thanks Maangchi!
I made this today. My goal this year is to make a new type of soup every week~
Hi everybody, thank you so much for your nice and encouraging comments! In the video, I asked you what kind of special food you eat in your culture on New Year's Day. Many of you guys left answers here.
I've learned a lot from you and I feel no matter where we live in the world, it seem like one thing we have in common is that New year’s day we give good wishes for good health and prosperity.
I blogged about this. Your answers might be there. www.maangchi.com/blog/new-years-day-food
This video is from 6 years ago & I only found it now. This soup is my favorite Korean food (besides kimchi + rice🤤) & I eat it all the time at my favorite Korean restaurant. I'm so lucky to have 2 in my small town. Your recipe looks PERFECT & definitely makes me want to try to make. Our tradition on New Year's Day is black eyed peas, rice, collard greens (or any greens). Peas are for coin money, greens are for folding money. They are usually seasoned with meat, maybe ham hocks or smoked turkey legs & wings. This food is delicious & I always loved it my whole life (black eyed peas I didn't like as much as collard greens & rice😋). You are an awesome cook & UA-cam star. I'm so glad I found you!👏👏👏👏
I also forgot to say that 2 of my 3 children also love this soup & always share it with me. I love to share it especially because that gives me room to eat more kimchi. I also put topping of kimchi on my bites of soup & rice cake. Do you ever do this? Also sharing gives me more room for other side dishes & for an order of dukbokki!!! I love your video for dukbokki too!!!🙌🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
2021 Still I am watching this vdo to cook Tokkuk. Thank you Maangchi nim.
❤️
2022
I grew up with this New Year's tradition: in the Southern states of the US (previously 'Confederate' states) eating black eyed peas around New Year's is linked to luck in prosperity. One bean for each day!! :D 365 in total
365 black eyed peas! How about small children? : ) haha they won't need any money yet at that age.
I’ve been following this recipe for a few years now and my picky family will even eat it. I made some and brought it to our family New Year’s Eve party for 2020. As Italians we normally eat lentils and beans at midnight for good luck so my grandma had that ready. But she was very welcoming with me adding to the holiday. She had her bowl of lentils and even ate the tteokguk with me.
Spanish (Mexico) caption is up now! One of my viewers submitted the caption! Thank you!

Hello! My mother was born in Korea. Sadly, she passed away in 2021. I miss her so much. Thank you for sharing your amazing talents. My mom never wrote any recipes down and NEVER measured (except rice with her finger) Your recipes are so close to my moms. I just made Tteokguk today for New Year. Thank you again for sharing and for your beautiful energy! Happy New Year🐇❤!!
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mother.
Maangchi, this looks amazingly delicious!!! I think I could make it and it's not a dessert baked in the oven! We don't have much of a New Years tradition since it's my birthday, but my mom always used to invite lots of people over and have a delicious bean dish ready to feed them!
Jenn, I found your comment just now! Thank you for your nice words. oh New Year's Day is your birthday? We eat seaweed soup on birthday. "my mom always used to invite lots of people over and have a delicious bean dish ready to feed them!" you can say to the guests, "hello! today's my birthday, too!" : )
This looks absolutely fantastic!
I made this just now. My husband said it's better than restaurant version. I threw in leeks and dumplings for some variety. Thank you Maangchi!
I just saw this in January 2020, it's not too late to enjoy! I don't know why but I'm so inspired by this soup .... I always learn so much about ingredients and techniques when I watch, such that it changes the way I cook ANYTHING! I think it's because Maangchi is truly generous with her knowledge n experience. ... there is no such thing as a secret recipe, ingredient or technique. .. everything is shared ... n no ego I get from so many professional chefs I've worked with .... just a very sincere, home cook enriching the world with her cooking ... she is a UA-cam treasure!
You can also put a couple pieces of mandu in there. Yummy.
Yes you can. It's called tteok-mandu-guk
I'm Korean but more Americanized. I didn't know this dish is made for New years too. I'm here to learn and make it for my parents. Hehe 🙂

I hope you have a marvelous new year. I'm trying to think of a traditional saying for new year's in my family's house... Been a while...
Ah yes... My great uncle used to say:
"May the road for you and yours be ever easy, the sun ever behind you to warm you all and may you all find smiles instead of obstacles where ever you go in your lives."
Happy New Year Maangchi. =)

This is perfect! My boyfriend and I have this on new years but never new how to make it. Now that we've moved we can't get the soup from this placewe would go to every year. I was bummmed out that we couldn't do our normal tradition, then I found this! Thank you!
Maangchi I love your personality!
I made this and it turned out to be such a huge success! Thank you so much for the recipe!
We always have a New Years dinner. Usually a Ham and sweet potatoes with brown sugar, butter, and cinnamon and other side dishes. I asked my Grandma why we ate a dinner every year? She said that we always have been poor in our family and we always used to pull together all our food and make a nice dinner to hope for a more prosperous year. Not to get money but to never be hungry or low on food again. 🥰❤🙏🏻
Another wonderful recipe. Turned out so good.
You made this! Happy cooking!

I’m not very good at cooking but, your videos and recipes are so easy to follow. Every dish is a success! My Korean husband and I moved last year to the US. He is training in the US military and usually can’t eat Korean food. The next time he will have a break to come home is at New Year’s. I’m definitely going to make this dish!
