My Grandmother had a woven copper dress. Yes, the whole dress, 20's style short dress made of fine copper thread. It looked so unique, and part of the strap was oxidized to green. I don't know what happened to that dress, but it was the most unique thing I have ever seen.
I hope we get an update like that!
That sounds amazing
Omg! That’s sounds so cool
Oo cool
any update on the copper dress?
She literally just made a $26 dress. And it’s worth every penny!😍

This beautiful creation deserves to be on display somewhere and the creator recognised for her work. It shimmies, it flows, it's gorgeous ❤
That was so awesome to watch. She did some fantastic work.
absolute couture
you don't give yourself enough credit
Fashion houses would have a team of 20 people making a dress like this
you're incredible~ thank you for always going that obsessive extra mile
This literally should have been at the 2021 Met Gala. The couture, the history. Simply amazing!
it looks a lot better than everything there
@@misseselise3864 I like Ciara’s football player dress though. One of the few who even bothered to follow the theme.
I AGREE !❤ Celebs should be contacting you SOON 😎
She should make a dress using tons of iridescent green beetle wings. They sell those at amazon. Some come in bags of 300. They are not heavy and would look really good. I think she should make a dress of that....that would look amazing
Yes she should show it around
Probably too late for this now, but I'd recommend putting a sheer/nude fabric sort of slip on beneath the dress whenever you wear it, to help your skin not smell like pennies but also to reduce redness from the metal touching your skin. Gotta say I do love the variation of color given by the pennies though, shiny versus the mucky and everything in between. Very cool to look at. You honestly could just display it on a mannequin at a museum if you didn't want to wear it again, I'm sure someone would display it!
Yeahhh I was hoping that it wasn't purely pennies as that is kinda.. _disgusting._
yeah, chain mail was worn with padded shirts for a reason!
I wonder if it would turn her skin green eventually...isn't this like copper?
Penny smell good tho
Fun fact: metal doesn't have a scent it's actually just a chemical reaction with our skin or something like that...
THANK YOU SHAY! I WON FIRST PLACE IN A FAIR CONTEST! There were a lot of other people and for me to come in first place was amazing, for anyone asking, no I didn't use any of her designs, I listed to her videos while designing my dress and put it all togther, the dress took me 7 months to finish because I have a lot of school, and I wanted to quit, but Shay, you kept me going and so did my boyfriend. Thank you
Congrats for winning!
That's awesome....good for you!
That absolutely needs to be in a fashion museum... and be shown on some big-time runways. Very very cool!
I wonder how sparkly it would’ve looked if all the Pennie’s were new and shiny? The dress is so gorgeous even without
True, but there's so much more depth because the petina on the pennies.
We need that penny cleaning dude 😌
All she has to do is soak the dress in coke overnight. The phosphoric acid cleans the oxides, removing the dirt and rust. Lemon juice works pretty well too
@@hannahbananapro what would that do to the thread, though? it would be so tragic if the thread were to be weakened after all that work 😭
That would probably be very nice.

Hi!!:D
My mom’s been collecting coins in a big cylinder-shaped can for 13 years. Any coin she finds is put in the can. She says she’s saving up for something. She won’t tell me what it is she’s saving for, but it must be something big. That big can is heavier than me, nobody can lift it. It’s been in a corner, beside our living room couch for ages. Nobody dares to even try counting all of it, but I’m guessing it’s probably worth a lot.
Please update this when you find out because now I'm invested
Omg no i wanna know
What could it be? A motorcycle? A trip abroad? A giraffe? Mittens???
Leaving this so I get notified ❤
E ( don't mind this comment I'm doing the same thing the comment above me is doing :] ) I'm curious tho what is she saving all that for!!??
Wasn’t there a coin shortage back then? Guess we finally know where all the pennies went lol. Such a cool dress though! Maybe you could add supports to the waist to help with the weight?
Been keeping up with this dress on your Instagram for what feels like FOREVER. It looks SO good I’m so proud omg😭😭😭

As a guy who made his first chain shirt at about your age, the secret to carrying the weight is a belt to carry some of the weight on your hips. I know your pain. Goid job you fabulous nerd.
You are so right
That's super clever and makes so much sense!
(Edit: I do think it is lovely)
Also wider straps on the shoulders for weight distribution would have also helped. If your smaller chested, you probably have never noticed this problem, but it is a bra problem for larger chested women. Weight distribution, it is a thing. OH, and corsets also were for this reason as well as shapewear. All those crinolines, hoops skirts, petticoats, and over skirts weighed a lot also. Distributing the weight over the entire torso and hips made it easier to wear.
@@midnightqueen3332 ya and ading to the back a litle would help to balance it. She culd also make the waist tigter so it might not need a belt.
@@martinhg98 making the waist tighter wouldnt be that possible with a dress in this style without some significant alterations. She had to slide in from the bottom of the dress, meaning it has to be able to go over the widest part of the body the hips or the shoulders(depending on your frame). Shrinking the waist means adding a Hook/Eye or belt system to the dress to accommodate a smaller waist.
The way I would solve it is mostly by Corset and having several Hook/eye clasps on the Corset and dress for it to hang off of, distributing the weight across the body and hips.
Extremely impressive... It looks beautiful on her!
This is incredible. The labor involved makes it a couture dress. And the scale mail is such a fun technique to discover.
Hi! Since this dress is essentially chainmail, the weight can be relocated from your shoulders to your waist with a belt. you can also make the straps broader. I'd love to see this project continue, and comfort seems to be the number one problem.
Maybe a belt made out of nickles or quarters.
@@dhy5342 ha, yeah!
Chain gang woowoo
Well, scalemail, but a lot of the same principles apply, having a corset styled back would also help transfer half the weight to the waist, as well as making it easier to adjust the hips to the point that it could much easier be donned or doffed, the next step would be making it practical to sit in, with chain mail this is easy, but scalemail would probably need some adjustments in how the scales are arranged or something.
@@eloujtimereaver4504 wait doffed is the actual antonym for donned ?!
You cannot wear this in Vegas in summer you'd burn your skin off 😬 but indoors or for a quick red carpet walk, this is hella cool. A girl in my high school made a dress entirely out of folded starburst wrappers. Not even gkue, just all folded together. I can't imagine that level of patience but here you are and there she is, so... it exists. And it's impressive as heck
Yeah I see how that could be problematic 😂
hmm, she could maybe try to make a layer on the inside that could prevent that, though it might just transfer the heat through the clothes.
@@scappley1735 could regularly apply water to the dress with a fine-mist spray bottle.
From a Vegas girl- that might really heat up no lie- it’s so hot here
@@scappley1735 yeah, this is one of the reasons why actual mail is worn with an undershirt-- a padded undershirt, so you don't just bruise straight through it when someone tries to stab you, but that's not exactly a going concern with a scale dress. maybe padded shoulders tho, to disperse the weight there some? else you'd end up with bruised shoulders after a few hours.
Can we talk about how the penny scale male bralette is the epitome of fashion ❤!
Scale mail?

I decided in college that a chainmail project for my next renaissance fair costume would be fun. I thought it would take a lot of time, but I was not prepared for the incredible amount of time it took to chainmail even small projects.
This takes ‘making a $20 dress’ to a whole new level. It turned out so pretty!
its 40 dollars:)
@@kalas2665 it's actually $20
If you count in the other materials, it's more like 40 dollars. I agree to kala.
I could see a celebrity wearing this to an award show, it's it's real winner! 🏆
Absolutely! A formal looking dress made from pennies sounds like something Lady Gaga or Katie Perry would wear.
Honestly this would have been PERFECT for the Americana type theme at the Met Gala last year
That's like 11lbs of copper.
Good way to work out and look cool doing it.
Or the met gala!
Should be McDonald’s new dress code
You are amazing! Wow! This dress can easily be sold for $7,000 It's an original design and the work you put into it is simply sensational! Well well done!
It’s so editorial. I can see so many A list celebrities wearing something like that. I’m picturing a vogue shoot. It’s phenomenal 🪙
Fun fact you're right about on point on how long it used to take to make Chainmail in medieval times.
Around a month and half to two months was the norm for a tailored chainmail.
If I remember correctly, scale mail was often made with a leather backing so it didn't pinch as much. That is if a warrior didn't already wear a layer of padding anyway. Adding a thin layer of leather or cloth would probably make the dress a little more comfortable and less cold when put on.
Yes. Scale mail was usually sewn directly into a liner of some sort (either leather or cloth) in order to reinforce the armor and give more surface area for the scales to rest against the body.
Oddly enough, since none of these would have been worn directly on the skin anyway, she actually accidentally hit on a different type of scale armor at the very beginning called lamellar armor, in which the scales are sewn together horizontally instead of overlapping. This gave more flexibility and less weight at the cost of more solid protection.
And then maybe you could add a zipper or something in that fabric too i guess? That would make it easier to get into aswell
Yes, it definitely needs some sort of lining. I’m surprised she didn’t think of that. At minimum, it would’ve come in handy for creating more comfortable & secure breast plates. God forbid her dress breaks at a boob & she has a Jackson style dress malfunction.
This would be such a good red carpet look for a Hollywood star. It looks awesome. ❤😊
Omg, I cannot express how incredible that dress turned out to be🤩 It’s giving off knight armor, glam rock stage outfit, mermaid (cause scales). Awesome work👏🏻😍
I sincerely hope a random celebrity sees this, wants to buy it from you for thousands $$$ and instant "BOOMS" you into fame. This is astronomically amazing!!! like honestly, I need to see this on the red carpet right now!

Nah, I'm sure every single of of these pennies is glad to be a dress instead of embarrassing themselves as currency of negative worth.
It reminds me of a mermaid's tail, great work!
This dress is GORGEOUS!!! Oh my god the fantasy vibes it gives even with the modern silhouette is super cool; though it was probably more work, I think scale mail was definitely the way to go.

As someone who makes maille, I am impressed with how quickly you got your dress done! A full suit of armor often takes 50-60 hours to make using either steel or aluminum rings. Someone who was experienced in chain maille could probably make something similar to your dress using only metal, but it would take a good 30-40 hours. If you ever do something similar in the future (I know, it's a crazy amount of work) I recommend using a belt to take the weight of your shoulders, or to wear padding underneath the shoulder pieces. Your work is beautiful, thank you for sharing.
@Corsius Atreides well, the correct term is Mailles, as the word is a norman/french leanword in english.
You could also use Hauberk, Lorica Hamata, Brünne etc

@Corsius Atreides Ohhhh someone needs a wee hug. C'mere then chap

She NEEDS to go viral. This is AMAZING
I can smell this dress through my phone… I would put a fabric lining on the inside. Over all it’s really cool, you did an amazing job
Fun fact the dress actually wouldn't have a smell, the smell comes from body oil in a reaction with the metal as a catalyst
@@ConstantChaos1 ya that's why it would need a liner.
@@aVonHolmium6520 yeah it makes sense to have a liner to act as a barrier although then there would need to be some method of cleaning the liner, I doubt it's machine washable lmfao
@@ConstantChaos1 this is good to know, I refuse to touch change because the smell grosses me out lol 😂
@@countrysidecoffins2925 if you absolutely had to for whatever reason thorough hand-washing prior to contact as well as an alcohol based hand sanitiser (or just rubbing alcohol) will strip away the oils (by washing) and temporarily halt oil production (the alcohol) for about 10 min
I can't imagine a situation where you were forced to use change but if somehow one arises doing this should prevent the smell from forming. A few atoms of the metal will end up left on your hands though so unless washed afterwards a faint amount of the smell might form once your body oil is allowed to return, but that would likely be unnoticeable
I've had this fantasy dress idea for awhile: Scale mail mermaid dress made out of mother of pearl scales. Imagine it being like mermaid armor.
I've never worked on dresses or scale mail. But this has been in the back of my mind for forever
it would be lighter weight than metal, that's for sure- but i think most kinds of shell wouldn't be durable enough to make a whole garment out of- they'd prolly chip too easily. might be better to stick with metal, but find some sort of coating for the metal to make it look pearly
Yeah. You could probably make something more durable, but with a similar look if you used metal + enamel.
Pearlescent painted lightweight plastic sounds ideal to me. Something flexible enough to get the shapes you want with mild durability. Lighter than metal.
@@xxselenaxx2142 think your idea is closest, and if you get the right kind you can even shape it into a shell shape, like perhaps a warbla(sp?), possibly those flexible plastic cutting mats you see at like Walmart...but my thought is if your going to use a plastic your going to need some kind of underdress for separation of plastic and body otherwise sweat is going to be running down the dress/shirt/skirt. This could be as a lining, or a separate shift, cami shirt/dress...
She's so talented.
Beautiful. For the amount of man hours and ingenuity, the price tag should at least be $150k. It’s a work of art, to be place on a mannequin and displayed at a party for entertainment.
I could totally see this as a party dress I would wear, it looks great and only 26$!
And like month of work. The resell value is probably more than 200 dollars bc its handmade and took a month to make.

You might be right but how hot would a Size 16 look in this dress!!! 😍
Also, the weight of the dress would increase. I don't think it would end up wearable because of that.
@@LotjeG I just wanted to point out that the difference needed to increase this dress from a 6 to a 16 would take an additional 25 cms of additional pennies. Hardly anything that would break anyone's back.
@@LizzieLizzieLizzieLizzie It's roughly 1/5 extra in width, not even taking into consideration the length of the dress and the cup size which probably needs to be increased as well. As seen in the video, the weight is already a lot for those straps, I don't think adding even a relatively small amount of weight would increase the comfort level. Maybe with a redesign it could work? I've seen people in the comments suggesting a belt so the bulk of the weight rests on the hip instead of the shoulder.

Fun fact: Coins actually don’t smell because they’re dirty. That metallic “coin” smell you identify actually happens as a result of the metal reacting with the chemicals in the sweat glands of your skin. This means, at the end when go said you smelled like pennies and needed to shower, you actually weren’t dirty at all (remember, you cleaned them all before using them) you were actually just smelling your own body on a chemical level.
That is so weird and interesting!

I dont care about fashion, but I appreciate the artistry in this. That dress is pretty. If you ever wish to do this again, use pennies that are from 1982 or earlier. They are pure copper. Modern pennies are mostly zinc, and they rot away very quickly. This much work deserves to last for years
Every time I see her videos I’m like :”how’s she going to top this?!”
And again she did that.💕✨
Ooooh yeah, I bet sitting down in that dress would give a new meaning to “pinching pennies “ ! A soft skin-colored knit liner would be necessary to actually wear it! Very cool design!
