Torture Testing The Anvil Foundry with a Barleywine Brew Day

  • All in one brew systems like the Anvil Foundry are popping up everywhere! Since we've already used the Robobrew (Brewzilla) and the Mash N Boil we were excited to Give the Anvil Foundry a Try - We reached out to Anvil/Blichmann, and they made it happen! We didn't want this to be just another easy brew day, though, so we ran the Foundry through the Ringer with a barleywine that took 4# more grain than the system's recommended capacity! Combine that with a 5 hour boil and we were in for an adventurous brew to say the least. Check out out brew day and let us know what you think!

    Hey, I have heterochromia too! Just bought the Foundry 10.5, as well. Can't wait to use it.
    Good vid, guys.

    This was a nice review. I seem to learn things from others when I watch them. One thing I noticed is that the unit I just recently bought is incrementally (for the better) different from the one reviewed. For instance, the control panel is at the top of the system as opposed to the bottom. Easier to manage the temperatures when you aren't bending down. I agree with the reviewers, there are a lot of thoughtful things that are incorporated into the Anvil Foundry 10.5. That being said, it's off to brew another batch with it!

    I’m on batch 5 with the Foundry. Love the system! I built a cord that lets me brew on 240v when needed and 120v when needed without having to cut the cord.

    How'd the grain basket work for hop trub? Brewed on the system a couple times and just used a separate straining bag, never thought to try the grain basket. Great video, quickly subscribed!

    i've had so many stuck sparges even staying within 16 pounds. tons of grain end up getting into the wort and i end up just draining it through a hop basket into a kettle, then back into the anvil through the hop basket a second time. i mean my hop basket caught quite a bit of grains. and that's not including what i rinsed out the anvil once i drained the wort. kind of wasting time. but otherwise it's great overall.

    great video as always guys. fyi you can get 20lbs of grain into the robobrew for a high grav brew if you use 6.5 gal strike h20, ditch the center mash tube and use a biab bag.

    • @jonathanelliott8423
      @jonathanelliott8423 4 роки тому +1

      That's what I've been doing with mine. So much easier and quicker. I usually treat the water 1st when getting to mash temp. Then keep a few pots near by to pull off the sparge water and wort when mash is done.

    • @GenusBrewing

      Ahh good call - haven't tried these with BIAB.. at some point we just use one of our other mashies :p

    Overall, I really like my Anvil Foundry 10.5 and I have about 8-10 brews under my belt. So, I have a pretty good grasp of the pros and cons of the system.
    Two things to note:
    1) absolutely plan for using this with 240v. After 2 brews on 110v I couldn't take it anymore! I was able to tap into my range feed with a junction box and dropped the wire down the wall for the outlet for about $50 in materials. This system struggles at 110v. It takes forever to heat up and your mash, and the boil is anemic and lethargic. You can expect a 6+ hour brew day on 110v.
    2) Buy the chugger pump; you'll thank me later.
    Happy Brewing!

    Hi guys,
    I'm living in Canada and tried to buy the foundry.
    A dealer sent me the following when I asked if the have the foundry:
    "The anvil foundry is not certified for our electrical laws. It can not be legally imported or sold under penalty of a 1 million dollar fine and six months in jail."
    Is this true?
    If yes, what else could I buy instead of the foundry

    Be careful of the grain basket holder. I know a couple people who have said that their grain basket slid off that little ring and just splashed wort all over. I have a friend who tack welded little nubs on it so the grain basket couldn't slide around on accident.

    What do you guys think if this system vs the clawhammer system for ebiab?

    • @losFondos
      @losFondos 4 роки тому +1

      I built a similar system to the C.S.with SS mesh basket and recirculation. The only major drawback is cleaning the mesh basket, that's why I'm thinking about getting the anvil foundry. You can get a mesh basket for 30€ on Aliexpress and convert a brew kettle to e-BIAB easily. I built my own PID controller but you can get away by using a plug-and-play Inkbird temp controller. In my opinion, the C.S. system is overpriced

    • @CC-wolverine
      @CC-wolverine 4 роки тому

      @@losFondos okay thank you for your response. Ya if I switch over was going to get a bayou classic 10 gallon and convert it over. It be about 500 to 600 with a pid controller and everything with a brew bag. Now I'm thinking about staying with propane. And upgrading my kettle and getting a ss brewtech chronical for a new fermator

    • @losFondos
      @losFondos 4 роки тому +1

      @@CC-wolverineI love brewing in my kitchen, electric systems have so many advantages that for me (and most German homebrew era) it's a no brainer to go electric from the start. But here everybody has 220V in every electrical plug.. I've never used a conical fermenter, but I wonder if the advantages it offers are really worth the price. If you want to save the yeast for future batches then top cropping is in my opinion the best way to do it, if it's not a lager yeast. Just put a few scoops of krausen in a sanitized jar and you have the healthiest and cleanest yeast you can get. What are you hoping of getting out of it and how will it improve your beer/packaging procedure?

    • @CC-wolverine
      @CC-wolverine 4 роки тому

      @@losFondos ya unfortunately I can only use 120 since it be to much to get the house wired for 240v and its a old double wide trailer so if I switch it be better to down size to 10 gallon kettle instead of my 16 gallon I have from bayou classic. I've always wanted a conical fermenter, and want to get away from using buckets. Heard it helps with clearer beer. I only use primary fermation and no secondary. Not tring to get a 14 gallon fermenter since my recipes aren't that dialed in yet to trust that big of a batch.
