Everything Joel is say is a reflection of years of experience. I love learning from him because he is actually reasonable & realistic.
Training people so they can be better for their dogs. It’s really the humans that need more educating. Obviously, dogs need help too. I see so many people who have no idea what they are doing & they just blame the dogs, without realizing it’s A LOT to do with their own energy. Love seeing this other side of Joel

I have commented in your other videos on strong alpha energy. Great to see you have this video posted, it's very crucial for the trainers to be versatile and tweak their energy approach to suit different dog character. In this video your soft approach works really well on him; however for layman viewer it may feel slow to show the result. This mostly due to trust issue, this boy will be 100% comply once the trust is built.

I'm really glad you posted this video. I have a rescued boxer/lab who is terrified of everything, leash, noise, me, etc. He curls into a ball and just shakes. I had been taking everything very slow and just letting him acclimate to me and his surroundings. My other dogs have helped him a lot but when I had to take him to the vet, it took back over a month of progress. Slowly getting him used the leash just walking thru part of the house. It's a very slow process but I have hope and not going to give up. It was helpful to see you changing (somewhat) based on the dog.

We were watching this episode last night and our fearful rescue dog was watching with us. She was paying close attention to what you were saying to the dogs . At one point you told the dog you were working with to sit. Our dog promptly sat. Doesn't help with the fearfulness but we are working on it.

so heartwarming to see you with this dog like that. So far I only knew your videos about working with "hard" dogs. To see you working with this guy makes it complete for me: you are now one of my two all-time favorite dog trainers. The other one is a female German dog trainer, who walks a lot with groups of dogs. I enjoy watching every second of your videos and learn a lot. Often rewind and look several times.

Of cause. Her name is Ursula Löckenhoff. German by the way. No english language. She has a little youtube channel, a dog hotel, does dogwalks wirh groups of dogs and wrote 2 remarkable books about having more than one dog and about walking with dogs. She integrates a helpful concept of thinking in borders and space for example in natural enviroments. Learned a lot for my Australian shepard. Dogs definitly understand and maybe think in conepts of borders and space. One method is to give the dog free to an defined space, which he is not allowed to leave. For example the path is free but not the wood. My Aussie understands that very well. She has a very nice way to communicate with dogs, using a lot of bodylanguage

This is so very helpful. I have 4 large rescue dogs (inc. 2 former street dogs). One of these is very fearful and the other very (let's say) boisterous (kinda leash aggressive). Different approaches needed for both.
Your recent videos have been of enormous help with both new arrivals. The walking multiple powerful dogs, this one and the leash walking ones, in particular. I've made good progress but it's a long journey.
It's simple, effective and humane as you mention in a recent viedo.

Thanks for all you do. The channel will only grow.

I adopted a dreaded dog 10 years ago.
She was not just afraid, she was terrified! She urinated under herself when she saw me.
She ran away from me as I approached her.
I couldn't help her at the animal shelter.
My labrador bitch managed to help her.
I tied the two dogs together with the leash, and when my own dog came there, she was forced to come there too. I brought her home and we started working.
I needed my good dog with zero aggression and dominance, and of course a lot of treats.
I wouldn't have succeeded without my labrador.
I was adopted her "temporarily", of course she eventually died six years later in our home.

I’m struggling with an 18 mo unsocialised and scared of everything golden retriever. I’ve had her just over a month now and she’s slowly getting exposed to new things inside and outside the home. However when she’s out on a walk she will not take a treat even though she’s really treat focused when she’s not scared. I tried the treats from the scary stimuli when my son had his friends over last night and she wouldn’t have a bar of it. One eventually got down with her and she finally allowed him to pat her after a lot of coaxing but not everyone visiting has that aptitude or time. I’d love a video with ideas on how to reward her without rewarding her fear. I’ve binge watched all your videos after coming across you in searching for fearful dog advice. I love that your messages are real life and practical. I’ve never had a dog this scared of the world before and you’ve helped me and Keeley heaps.

Love that you're showing some fearful dog sessions. I rescued a pretty fearful shelter dog a few weeks ago and me being 'erratic' or 'poppy' on walks isn't something he normally responds well to. Being 'pulled' from the side has worked well when I need it. I appreciated you explaining side vs straight line pulling because side pulling needs less force and is softer. And 'popping' to get his attention in a high stress situation(another leashed dog going at him) has worked well to re-focus attention so I can command him to follow me and exit the high stress situation. After doing that a few times he follows/exits other people's dog lunging at us pretty well with no fuss. Oddly a current problem is that he has sort of become a protector/guard of me. At home, the 'okay, I see, come' has worked well if he bark warns about something nearby outside.
FYI, this is a dog that another trainer said was pretty much a lost cause(would always be a fearful dog) and wouldn't make it if I returned him to the shelter. So your videos are making a difference out here.

OMG, Charlie could be my sweet boy! I adopted my dobbie at LCAL rescue shelter in Oceanside October 27th, and when we picked him up he was so docile I knew he’d be perfect for a 68 year old woman. He is probably 5 or 6 and loves to play with other dogs, wants to meet people, but he still won’t look at anyone of us in the face. Thank you Joel for reinforcing my opinion that what he needs is plenty of gentleness and TLC.

Thank you for this! I've looked and looked and looked for help with my small fearful dog. Short part of a long long story.. but in recent months my rescue lost her buddy (he was 16 years old and helped raise her) and then was charged and terrified by some big dogs on a walk. Her fear has gotten so much worse since then and I've been feeling stuck on what to do. I've had to step back further and further in her training because she keeps shutting down. Tried this today and felt some hope. She was almost... enjoying this exercise by the end AND I got a few looks in the eye. Slow progress, extra extra patience ahead of us but HOPE.

It has actually been very exhausting trying to bring him out of his fear which has tearned into fear aggression. Oh how I wish I had known about you 3 years ago!!!! He was attacked/bitten 🤬 at 9 weeks old and again 15 weeks old (by 2 different dogs). Then at 2 1/2 years old, a dog broke it's owners front door down, and charged us as we were walking in our neighborhood 🙄. I have a 3 year old Bernedoodle named Ivy. She is very chill/aloof around other dogs or people out in public, and I've never seen anything really startle her. However when at home either in the yard or inside she gets really alert/reactive when she sees people or other dogs outside the fence or windows. I guess she is territorial at home but recognizes when out in public or on a walk its not her territory and calms back down. When in public she is not in the least food or treat motivated. When away from home she will not drink or eat anything no matter what.
Its interesting how every dog has their own personality and therefore being flexible to accommodate these differences is important.

There is so much good stuff in this video! Even though Charlie didn't 100% get to where you wanted him, these are the types of videos that are most interesting! It shows the process and the struggle. Charlie really wasn't sure about the camera. lol I do have one thought: At 5:40 you were really focused on giving the treat. I think with a dog like these reaching them on an emotional level can be even stronger than treats. Charlie came right up to you and was smelling your mouth like he wanted to kiss and you tensed up and kind of turned away. That seemed to break his trust a bit, and he instantly turned back like he did something wrong. If you had kissed the air or at least stayed relaxed, I bet you would've earned his trust much more.

@@drewd2 Except as a professional trainer, you are not only conerned with what is happening in the moment but also the reinforcenent the reward for certain behaviors will be going forward. In this moment the dog was okay. However in the future someone else may not be so lucky.
It is the same way you should not allow a dog to freely roam on furniture. Not because it is bad inherently, when my dog is clean I have no problem giving him the okay to get up and cuddle witb me. But when he is muddy he doesnt know the difference.

Can you do a video showing how we approach this issue if the dog is reactive by barking at the strangers? is it any different than how we approach this matter with an adult dog? She can pass by strangers and kids while in a heel during a walk, but if they approach any other time she’s reactive.

I'm spending quite often times at play grounds so my dog can watch those strange people run around.Everyone has to keep distance from him (so he feels safe and protected by me) and is not supposed to look him in the eyes. But the idea to give treats to kids so they reward him and he associates children with treat delivery is good.however I find it quite challenging to keep them away as they so badly want to pet him.I know that he would snap at them. So I won't let them close and risk our relationship and his trust to me.

Hello it’s me again. I tried your most recent leash pop method video to reactive dog on leash walking. I tried that pop method with my new dog that I got and yes absolutely it works so I got really excited and I wanted to try it out with my friends dogs. I’ve been to her house before and I’ve met her dogs before but this was my first time trying to train her dogs. I definitely am not experience all I am doing is watching your videos and other UA-camrs such as Nate Schumer, McCann dog training and a few Zak George videos. My friend has this one dog named Misty which is a one year old bull mastiff and she’s pretty sweet but today she acted very soft dog and very shy with me and sometimes she is like that but I did walk with her with my new dog at a public park one time and she was pretty perfect it will behave as compared to my husky. So to set the scene I am in my friends front yard waiting outside my friend brings out Misty and they’re kind of was a lot of distractions outside and when I grabbed the leash Misty was very timid and scared of me and was not wanting to walk with me or my friend and I try to do a leash pop thing and she yelped and then I immediately stopped and I said hey friend I think we should try this again another time she seems a little too overstimulated and I don’t want to cause trauma. Watching this video I just sent a text to my friend saying I want to try something different with Misty so I want to get her to answer to her name and get her used to me and used to being on a leash in my hands in the comfort of her own living room without any other distractions.

I love love love your videos but can we ask the cameraman to film the dogs more? There are a lot of times I wish I could have seen the dogs behavior or reactions 😅

Hiding in corners. That is what my 8-month GSD pup does ! Her behavior is exactly like Charlie's. She seems afraid of me. I don't get it. She was 3-months-old when I got her; and she was always confident and gregarious with me -- until now, at 8-months old. She has no reason to fear me, zero, none. Yet her behavior is the same as Charlie's. I just don't get it.

    First let me thank you for all the time and attention you and whoever is helping you put into these wonderful videos;
We’ve recently rescued a wonderful part Chihuahua male who’s about 2 or 3 years old. He’s completely affectionate and friendly however, he has one behavior I’d like to help him overcome. When my wife or myself call him to us often he will cringe and refuse to approach us. When he’s being petted even though he seems to enjoy it he almost always has his ears back and tail tucked between his legs. Either that or he rolls over in total submission. It seems he might have been abused by his previous owner. I’m stumped as to how to help him with this. Do you have any suggestions?

My dog ( fearful puppy mill rescue that was in the barn too long and is completely unsocialized-- but he is a sensitive dog as well ) … my dog won’t take treats and I have tried EVERYTHING… I have to put it on ground and he won’t eat it right away .
How do I REWARD in this situation?

My dog is similar. Too much feminine energy. I balance it out by masculine energy training through calm, assertiveness training. Confidence. The previous owner just put her in a crate all day not enough exposure to the world. She used to whine alot when we got her. We also showed a bit less affection on the dog because it was training her to jump on random strangers. Then I ran with her everyday, and it made a huge difference.

Thanks for a video on fearful dogs. This is helpful with my rescue dog. Can you also discuss resource guarding? We gave her a raw knuckle bone and she lunged, growled and snapped at my husband when he reached for the bone. We've never had an issue with resource guarding until the bone. Thanks!

I know this is an old video, but I’ve seen other trainers suggest getting strangers (and especially kids) to give a dog treats when they’re scared can be dangerous. What are your thoughts on this? I have a stranger danger dog who does ok in public but runs away and sometimes growls when approached. He’s nervously taken treats from strangers before, and I planned to start doing it a lot taking hot dogs out into public and asking people to offer them to him. But now I’m worried that’s a bad idea.

do you have any tip on "soft" dog that is only afraid of other dogs in certain environments/situation. i have a 1.5 year old cane corso that shows so much fear that she is the one that dogs attack in dog park cause they can feel her fear, so then she will start running away and whelp although she is bigger and stronger, will only show teeth and growl if she is cornered, she also whelps instead of growl when trying to make male dog leaving her alone. It started when a pit bull attacked her in dog park when she was 6 months old. she doesn't afraid of dogs we meet outside or when they pass in front of the yard. also there is another big not very socialized dog and she wants to play with him she teases him, he growls and chases after her she whelps and runs for her life and when he doesn't chase her she goes to tease him to chase her again and whelps although this dog never touches her, he just growls when chasing (he is fastly corrected by the owner)

Great clip. Just the Title is a little misleading as to what the video actually contains, I didn't really understand the point or what the "aim" was here, haha. But good to see a different style of Beckman's Training!
I know he's extremely nervous, however, considering Joel has worked with many nervous/fearful dogs before -- isn't there a stage where Charlie should "get over it & live in the real world"? Like there's a lot of switching around in this Vid, plus I'm kinda left feeling as-if there was no real follow-through with any of the actions that were initiated....

Is soft different than fearful dog? I have a 4mo puppy, she is normally great, playfull and all. While we are in the house. When we are outside, she goes tail between the legs and hides between my legs. Nothing ever happened outside…that i am aware off.
I just found your channel, it was suggested because i was watching zak george. It took some time for me to start watching you, because zaks production is just much better. But your methods work. Recall on my girl is nearly perfect in controlled environment, we are working on leash walking and its all going great. I was not able to do that with zaks help. Thanks for all the hard work!

Joel, any suggestions on dealing with an older adult dog (7 yr English lab female) who is fearful of men? She spent 7 years living in a kennel (she’s a retired breeding momma) without a ton of human interaction. She is very fearful of my husband. We’ve had her for 2.5 months and I haven’t been able to get her comfortable around him yet. With me, she’s super chill and a sweetheart, but pretty independent, which I expected. I had my husband basically ignore her for a couple weeks- that has helped a bit but I think it’s time we maybe get her out of her comfort zone. She basically fears most people but she seems more scared of men - especially bigger, taller guys with deep loud voices (like my husband ;) ). Thanks!

My ex street dog from Cyprus is like a cross between Charlie and previous board and train Ava, behaviour wise, especially around men. He's more comfortable with women. We've done 18 months of counter conditioning with my husband and 2 boys (lots of treats, gentle but firm interactions etc) and he's plateaued out. I'm not sure how to get to the next level?
