New to the channel, what species of urchins are these? I've gathered they're invasive and preventing kelp from growing from the comments, but would love to know more.
@@jeremiahtorrevillas4396 Not invasive, but overpopulated. The predators that eat them are being overfished and losing habitat due to climate change so the sea urchins are growing out of control and eating too much kelp. To combat the overpopulation they're harvesting them/popping them open to feed fish not adapted to combat their spines.
@@jeremiahtorrevillas4396no, not invasive. Just over populated to the point it's detrimental to the environment. Technically it's a result of us being the invasive species and fishing their natural predators that we have to fix the problem we caused. It's like white tailed deer, they are native to NA but cause harm to the environment because we hunted too many of their natural predators that they can no longer keep the population in check themselves.

I really appreciate the way you edited this one. Less time outside the water and a lot more of kina farming. I imagine it takes a lot more of material bu i appreciated.
I was happily watching the urchin colony get vandalised after taking over the reef but then he decided to have a picnic as well ❤😂😂 is that sushi grade stuff??? 😂😂😂
the sounds are so relaxing. I haven't been able to swim like this in a few years and seeing this reminds me how much i miss it. keep up the awesome work!!
Urchins will lay millions of eggs in a year. It takes about 2-5 years for them to reach maturity to reproduce. Note: I’m reading this from Purple Sea Urchins, not sure about the urchins in the vid. But I can imagine most species of Sea Urchins will lay many eggs per year.
@@cookingwithkimbap4432 I mean, not necessarily. While in egg/infancy stage they're subject to the typical harsh conditions of any young creature. Disease, weather, and predators will easily lower the number of urchins that reach sexual maturity. Of course, that really just means a hundred thousand will live to maturity rather than the whole millions of them so I guess it's a moot point lol.
This is so mesmerizing to watch. Thanks guys for the effort you help the sea beds cleaner from pest, I hope you make more vids of this here in YT. New sub btw.
Bro actually ate form a fresh urchin was NOT expecting that! Begs the question I’ve been thinking this whole time though; what does an urchin taste like???
They are still a native species and they're trying to thin the population not completely remove them. If they were invasives, they'd be removing them all.
Would be cool to get a video on you, your story, why you do what you do etc. seems like a cool channel and think you’ve got a lot of avenues to really expand your content!
So I'd love to actually know more about this and would love if you could answer some basic questions. 1. How often do you harvest the urchins? 2. Exactly how invasive are they? 3. What exact species of urchin is this?
It’d probably be more of a burden than a help. You can only carry so many to the surface in a net anyway so it’s probably easier and more economical to just use snorkels. Plus scuba is more dangerous with the bends
