When I got my driver's license back in 1993, I got a '68 Buick Wildcat that was 9 years older than I was and it certainly was old then! I managed to keep it 8 years and I needed to subscribe to Hemmings Motor news for spare parts as they were already inexistant in junkyards around here! I still have mid-1960s Buicks but I stopped driving them daily years ago! And now my daily driver (a 1993 a Toyota SR5 pickup that I bought 15 years ago) is older than my first car was in 1993. People talk to me about it in parking lots as if it was a unique vehicle. They made millions of these and for so many years that there were still plenty on the roads until recently and to me, they never felt old as they were brand new and out of my reach when I got my driver's license! I have to admit they are getting rarer around here! I'm even thinking about storing it for winter now!

I live in Maine with lots of rust. Last year I picked up a rust-free '05 GMC Sierra Crew Cab from North Carolina for 10k. Put another 5k into it, suspension, 2" lift kit, new radio, few small fixes and other things to make it pretty. They're so easy to work on.... This thing does everything a new truck does for a fraction of the price.

Picked up an 03 Dodge Dakota quad cab with 95k miles for $8k and it was in good shape despite being in Colorado for most of its life. V8 engine in a midsize means it could tow if needed but on the highway it eats miles with its large gas tank. So far have put 65k miles on my own with about another $5k in for some fixes, maintenance, and tasteful mods. Old trucks can still treat you good.

I agree on the Nissan hardbody/Pathfinder/Terrano. The 3.0 liter V6 is bulletproof. Only worry is the idiots that dont realise that the engine and oil filter takes just about gallon of oil. 3-4 k miles max between oil changes.

I've owned hardbodys for twenty years. In Colorado. The frames rot like crazy if your in an area that uses mag clhoride.
Hardbody?? The body metal is the thinnest sheet metal ever put on a truck or car! That said the drivetrains are rock solid, the traction on the 4x4s is amazing , many came with rear posi stock. Parts are still available and fairly cheap. 400k and 290k trucks still don't use oil.

      @Jeff-rd6hb 7 місяців тому

Haha, you're 100% right about the sheetmetal. I worked at a Nissan dealership when the hardbodies came out. Our sales guys jokingly referred to them as lardbodies because exterior panels were so soft. Other than that they were good trucks.

We don't use salt as in rock salt, in Colorado. We use mostly sand and mag chloride. Yeah, mag chloride will rot out your car, but it takes a lot longer.

Ive had to throw some money at it the last couple of years but so what. I plan to give it to my son in a couple of years when he gets his license.

The 2006 TRD I have the paint is wearing thin it's down to the factory primer..
My high IQ CaliFOREIGNia State employee, retired, tells me to use OTC rattle cans to paint the truck..
It's only because she some of the top quality paint work I did working for a company that sold and repaired
Jac-ob-Sen and other brands' turff equipment.
I would strip down old outdated equipment, clean with purple cleaner, which will etch the surface and provide a great bonding surface..
Once cleaned I used Wallylands brand 98 cent cans of primer and black paint..
For the factory orange, I used the factories canned paint..
Once done, the manager couldn't tell which one was factory or my work..
Sad part, he sold them as new equipment...
    Not refurbished..
A reel head that was worth $250 used, he sold for $1400 as new..
Took over all time for one head 2 hours..
    Times 5 heads.
Parts and labor total was $350, for a profit of $4,000, which he pocketed because they weren't in the inventory..
He paid my time and parts out of pocket..

As an owner of a 93 ""Hardbody" also known as a D21 or 850 to a windshield shop...strange... I would disagree about sticking to a v6. My 4 banger K24E is only 10 less HP than the V6. I wanted to V6 swap it but when I found out there wasn't much difference in power that a good exhaust wouldn't make up for, the work wasn't worth it.

I went to purchase comparable GMC truck again & was $64,680 plus plus plus. Almost 70k out the door. Went & bought a new 2023 Honda Ridgeline AWD V6 that tows my 18 1/2 ft Ranger bass boat for out the door $42,645.88 made in Alabama. Told GM I’d been a customer for 49 years. They priced themselves out of my league.
