Do you normally seal and reinforce the back of the frame when you originally build it? That could help mitigate the movement or weakness that cause opening like that. Very interesting to see how these problems are resolved, and will try that routing technique
I have generally used Brad nails and biscuit splines for frames like this, but this frame may have lacked the biscuits, I’m not sure. I also have have a v-nailer. But with recent traditional frames I’ve been adding this back spline and sealing with shellac - so far good results!
