LOL! Actually there's a live version from the 70's on YT - and it's so good. BUT the singer's mike isn't coming through...so I came here for a studio version.
Some times this song makes me feel like a badass and others like some bad shit is gonna go down. Portents of things to come. Often I dunno which will apply.
I found this album at a garage sale while out riding my bicycle around 8 yrs old gave like $1 and it was a not for sale promo copy only stamped on it in red. This song is the one that sent me on my harder rock and roll journey. I still have that same album today and I'm 60. Love it and thx Joe.
I asked producer Bill Szymczyk why Joe recorded it twice. He said Joe had a new band and wanted to take another stab at it. I asked which version he preferred. He said this one. I agree.
Rock ‘n’ roll has been around for a while, But the all-time best, I mean the greatest most unbelievable rock ‘n’ roll has came out of the 70s!! And yeah I’m not forgetting About the 60s and the great music that came out of that generation but, BAR NONE, 70’s fn rock In my opinion was rock ‘n’ roll at its best!
I like to think of it as a generation which is typically thought of in terms of 15 years so I'm going with 1964 through 1979. My reprise is the grunge era of ~ 89 to 96. BTW I toss out the almost all the disco of the late 70's.
This is one of the reasons I will be cranking out the jams in my nursing home. At 3:49 you can actually Feel what rock is all about. This was not just distortion. Joe was able to let us feel what his music was saying. Still sends shivers down me backbone. I love rock and roll.
An amazing song by an awesome guitar player. Joe Walsh is one of the most overlooked artists of the past fifty years. He is a true triple threat - a lyricist, a composer and a phenomenal musician. A very modest individual who allows his music to speak for him.
+RazorbackLord - hmmm... I don't think he's been "overlooked", it wasn't too long ago that Billboard put him on the list of the greatest and most influential rock guitarists of all time. I dunno, I'm from N.E. Ohio, so maybe I just hear more about him because he's from our area. Joe is considered to be kind of a God around these parts. ;)
BEST SONG EVER FOR ALLTIME! My life has always been based off of songs like this to speak to me and help express through feeling rocking just how I feel. I feel you Joe!
I remember hearing this song on the Lords of Dogtown soundtrack (always liked the Documentary better) at 12 and it really sticking out to me and has stuck with me since, being already aware of Life's Been Good and In the City. I think Joe is really underrated as solo act, growing up on classic rock radio, I felt like his songs had character to them that I didnt hear in others.
When this tune first hit we were teens driving down the road listening to Turn The Stone feeling like complete badasses...couldn't tell us nothing! hahahaaa Joe Walsh is THE badass...thank you for rocking us with your timeless badassery Joe!
😂😂 I remember, vaguely, listening to this while eating Qualudes (the real Rohr 750's), snorting cocaine, all while drinking boiler makers...how'd I make it to 2024 🤷♂️

Too raw for AM radio, though FM probably played it a few times. The 1974 rerecording was made for AM stations, and included members of The Eagles on it. This was three years before Joe officially joined that band.
An amazing piece of music that I'm sure influenced a lot of later bands. The production's about as sweet as it gets while the band are faultless, and as somebody who plays the instrument I've never heard power chords sound so good on a bass guitar. Proto-metal at its best.
***** This version is a rock and roll classic ! ! ! The other version (1974, from the album "So What") is very good, but this one has more of an edge to it. Joe's vocals sound more urgent, and the drums are killer ! ! ! This one's got more fire.
overdrive1975 More raw, more edge, more fire, more urgent!!!! Amen!!! This version is like...............WWOOOOOOOOOWW!!!! Jams don't get any better than this. This song blew me through the 70's.
+Sigkim casettes. I had a tape of "the devil went down to georgia" when I was 6 or 7 and I listened to it so many times it swore out. Remember commercials for "Best of the 60s or 70s" compilations - Not available in stores! 9.99 for lp, or 10.99 for 8 track or casette! Sorry, no C.O.D.s... That's definitely one thing better about now. Any song you can think of is at your fingertips and if you dont know what its called, you google a couple of the lyrics and there it is. Used to have to ask 20 people before anybody knew what you were talking about! I'm rambling.Take it easy!
+Sigkim Well, I was close. But I'll have to give up my dream of being an age and weight guessing carnie. Damn. That was gonna be where I get that Porsche money!
The intention of the song and the lyrics are powerful. First heard it when I was 15 and never let go. I live this whole album but this song especially.
I'm glad too! The 1st time I heard "Turn to Stone" was at "Devil's Trap", last S1 chapter, when Sam and Dean have the colt and are on their way to see Bobby looking for help... that music just touched my ears and I INSTANTLY loved it. The spn music full of that classic rock is just a great pleasure!
Baré Multiplayer Epic :) but I think o primeiro "The Road So Far" recap foi "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas, no penúltimo capítulo em T1:E21. :D
Just came across this comment and I always thought the same thing... seemed like a perfect fit for Goodfellas or Casino. Just watched Black Mass and was like,. "about time this got into a gangster flick".

Me , at least once a week I been listening to it like 5-8 times in a row , just the initial main guitar and bass riff is god like especially with that nasty fuzz pedal theyre using on the guitar and the bass , sounds like def playing through good old marshal tube amplifier half stack heads , can't beat the distortion sound those heads give to a guitar IMHO , only amp I ever used that sounded just as bad ass but in def more of a metal way , was this only mid 1980's Peavey practice/small gig solid state amplifier with a single 12 speaker , whether playing any of my Ibanez's, my fender Stratocaster , my Jackson "randy Rhoades" flying V guitar or my Gibson SG that amp just made them all sound like magic, too bad they dont sell peavey's any longer and marshal tube power heads nowadays are like over $2000 just for the head alone , at least the one I like the best anyway. song makes me feel like I'm hard core as hell , then it ends and reality kick in and my short lived fantastical self vision of myself quickly comes to be nothing more than exactly what it was , a fantasy lol.
Holy Crap!!! This song is off the chain... just discovered it and I'm 59! And it's already in my top 10 songs of all time.
With you all the way

Where ya been? But hey! Glad your here. Im 67 and been groovin to Joe since I was a teen in Detroit Rock City
Barnstorm is such a great album and it seems to be hidden away!
Really!? I’m 42, and enjoy all genres even trap. But classic rock and old Joe Walsh is one of the greatest, and so’s this song .
That heavy fuzzy sound coming from the guitar and bass is what makes this one the best version to me. This song makes you feel like a badass.
If you like that raw fuzzy sound listen to the live version 72 and you’ll cream your pants
LOL! Actually there's a live version from the 70's on YT - and it's so good. BUT the singer's mike isn't coming through...so I came here for a studio version.

@@saintapathy yeah so this is the original version from Barnstorm right? Then he re-recorded it on So What...and it doesnt sound as good.
This is by far the best version of Turn To Stone.
There are better live versions.
Look for the "laid back" version with Don Felder sometime, or the more classic live version from 2May1975.
@@bricefleckenstein9666 I just came from there. Felder is the shit, but I grew up with this version, can't be beaten for my money.
It sounds way better more original than other ones.

At least 40 years worth now. Check out Roy Buchanan's version also

Nice to hear that you reduce SOUL to a re-do track....😐
I agréé too, simply.
Houston 77' version is absolutely top shelf insanity

Joe Walsh, Mississippi River Festival Summer of 1974. His new band Barnstorm blew us away. It was a magic time.
An amazing song by an awesome guitar player. Joe Walsh is one of the most overlooked artists of the past fifty years. He is a true triple threat - a lyricist, a composer and a phenomenal musician. A very modest individual who allows his music to speak for him.

Badass seems to be the most common description in the thread, by far. It’s what I wrote, without even thinking about it.
The solo at the end is celestial.
thats what makes this the BEST version
Joe Walsh, and good taste in music brought me here!
Every version of this song is phenomenal. If he'd done a disco version of it, it would have rocked.
With the Bee Gees as backup.
One of my favorite all time guitar songs ever!
I never heard this song till I watched Black Mass back in 2015. Now I ask myself what I've been missing all these years.

I just DIG the echo of Joe's vocals in this version. But...damn this song fits this chapter in time.
The best version. The opening and 3:50 is soul snatching .

One Of My Favorite Vinyl Records, Turn To Stone Is Raw & Real Here, Way Better Then The Other Version
There will be a special place for joe in heaven. Gb
Joe Walsh the cool Eagle. Guy wrote some fine tracks in his day.
What a tune ... on repeat for a week now. Miss the oldschool sound, riffs and solos. So raw, organic, alive and eventually nostalgic.
This song just makes me wanna feel my hair blow in the wind, skatin' through the hills of Cali lolol 😎💚🤙 #Dogtown #masterpiece

Powerful beyond measure
What a badass rock n roll song.
Hey now, the well run dry
Pages of your book on fire
Read the writing
On the wall
Hoe down, it's a show-down
Ev'rywhere you look, we're fighting
Hear the call
And you know it's gettin' stronger
I can't last very much longer
Turn to stone
Well there's a change in the wind
You know the signs don't lie
Such a strange feelin'
And I don't know why it's takin'
Such a long time
Backyard people
And they work all day
Tired of the speeches and the way
That the reasons keep changin'
Just to make the words rhyme
And you know it's gettin' stronger
Can't make 'em run much longer
Turn to stone
