  • Silky Outback Series: I "SAW" Them And Just Had to Have Them! A great many of us that enjoy Bushcrafting and Wild Camping are guilty of owning a great many knives and axes. SAWS are no exception! Even though I owned a sufficient number of good saws, when I "SAW" the Silky Outback Series of folding saws, I just had to have them!

Great review. Every time I process firewood, I'm reminded how out of shape I am for that sort of work. Hitting the woods tonight! Hope to take some of our Boonedockery knowledge with us! Thank you as always.

I like Silky saws. I have a Super Accel Z1, and the Hayauchi 21' pole saw. A bigger model like the Big Boy may be in my future.
The guy who used your Bahco like a machete reminds me of the time I bought a Felco hand pruner. My first task was to trim a Nandina bush. I picked out a shoot to cut off as close to the ground as I could get. I squeezed the handles together, but they stopped without cutting the shoot off. I examined the problem and found an old roofing tack had found its way between the blades. Made a nick in the blade on the very first cut! Ugghhhh!!

Hello Brother John, you have done a good job of demonstrating how to use those excellent saws. If someone is in the need of one, you have helped them. As for me, I'll keep using my 20v Max 6" chainsaw for bigger pieces and my Chinese saw [like the one you showed first] for smaller stuff. Since I don't backpack, I don't worry about bulk or weight. On another note, didn't know about the house fire. Been there, done that, don't want to do that ever again. Hurricanes are bad enough, thank you. Hope you have recovered well my friend. Blessings, David.

Howdy Brother David! My family situation requires that I must be in cell service and fairly nearby if I'm needed at home. The new property I'm using is a 15 minute drive from my house and has old logging roads crisscrossing through hundreds of acres of woodland. Most of these roads have trees downed across them so whenever I'm there, I keep a chainsaw, tools, chains, oil and fuel with me. So, I've been using my chainsaw to cut firewood. for my camping spots. I can put up a weeks worth per site in a very short period of time. Basically a weeks worth in the time I can produce a days worth with my silky(s) and it's the size of my calf at it's largest. I'm getting spoiled! Hahahahaaaaa!!!!! Blessings to you and yours this Christmas Season Brother David!!!!

I have owned and used the same Bahco Lap saw for at least twelve years now and she's plumb wore out!
I have owned a Gomboy 240 with large teeth for a few years and have used it only a couple times...I did not know at the time i purchased it that Larger teeth were more suitable for cutting green wood.
I now have a Gomboy 240 with medium teeth sitting under the xmas tree...so time will tell...In the meantime I still carry my old worn out bacho in a butt pack...I like the look of the Outback series for sure...just a bit spendy for me.
In elk camp, for putting up large quantities of fire wood and clearing trails, we of course use chain saws, accept in designated wilderness areas (where chain saws are not allowed), we use two man crosscut saws...though at 70 years I'm getting a bit long in the tooth for that kind of nonsense LOL...great video John!...woods

A "bit long in the tooth" does that mean your better with green wood??? Hahahahahaaaaaa.... (per your gomboy info). In my reenacting days I tried my hand at two man saws in varying capacities. Having the right partner is crucial to getting any work done. I'm only 59 and the prospect of having to team up to cut firewood with a crosscut would not appear on my top 100 favorite things to do... I pray you and yours have a Very Blessed Christmas Season!

I have a Smith Carina tree timing saw that has a blade like the Silky Saw. I almost lost a thumb after it went through the branch I was trimming. That style ow blade removes material fast, very aggressive teeth!!

I understand that replacement/different-purpose blades for Silky and similar products are expensive. I own two Silkys of different sizes. They work fine for cutting wood for campfires and twig stoves. I also own a classic wooden framed bowsaw. It is long but not heavy and it doesn't rattle like the Agawa-style saws.

Have you seen the wooden framed bowsaws Simon (A Bloke In The Woods) produces. Fantastic tools as well as a work of art! I would love to have one of those. You are correct about the Agawa saw, It makes a lot of noise in your pack. I have a piece of foam I wedge into the blade to quiet it a little bit, but it still makes some noise. Blessings to you and yours the Christmas Season Brother James!

    Hey Brother John,,,,
I’ve got the #240 gomboy,,, and no doubt, it is a workhorse. My other two saws are by Agawa,,, boreal 15 and 24,,
I’ll keep a eye out for a sale on the larger Silky,, Great Video 👍👍👍🔥👍👍

The bow saw I showed was the Agawa Borial 21" I believe? I prefer it for bushcraft woodcraft. It's makes very precise cuts. I've seen the Silky Katana...... Just WOW....... More saw than I could ever have a use for.... Blessings to you and yours the Christmas Season Brother Joshua!

I love a good buck saw, but the bow part does get in the way more often than one might think. Thats where the Silky/Bahco style comes in handy, I have the latter and plan to eventually get the former when the expected use justifies the cost.
And I can't agree more about being careful with saws even if ones "been doing it my whole life." Any time I'm using a saw or blade for cutting/chopping/splitting Ive got medical on me and more close by (I highly recommend Refuge Medical, lifetime warranty and good people too). Good kits arent cheap, but medical bills and funerals even less so.

Excellent comment!!!! You addressed some very important topics! I hope many read this. You may have noticed I don't use my axes much. They are (IMHO) a very specific tool for very specific purposes. I've seen some very big wounds made by very small axes. I am not afraid of the tool, however I have a deep respect for the harm it can cause when not handled properly.

@@boonedockery7220 sounds like what my tomahawk is to me,, of all my tools I think that one has the most "bad oopsie" potential.

    Brother John,,,,,
This is my P.S. to my previous comment,,,
Blade longevity,,, I have the Outback Gomboy. I’ve been using the original Blade for 3 years ( approx),,, and I believe that today I need to switch it out. Have you heard of repurposing the used blades in any fashion,,,??? As far as processing game,,, the Agawa 15 blade is what I would choose over the silky,, it’s more of a hacksaw than chainsaw,,, Blessings to You and Your Family,,,, Joshua

    • @boonedockery7220
      @boonedockery7220  6 місяців тому

If it's still got some "cut" left in it, I'd keep it as it doesn't take up too much space. Just in case a repurposing idea manifests itself. The Agawa can store several different blades at a time. It's like a saw version of the Swiss Army Knife! Hahahahaaaaa!!!!! Merry Christmas To You And Yours Brother Joshua!

Dang blades are super brittle though unfortunately. I've got a gomboy, and it's saved my bacon a couple times. Broke the blade in half on a push cut, so heavy emphasis on pulling through.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks for sharing that! The Bacho blade is very resilient. It actually bends without breaking.
