They announced today that it will be closed for the entire year. They have had major issues with all of their rides the past 5-10 years, with several often being closed for long periods of time. Their quality of staff has also severely declined. It's a shame as it was once one of the best hidden secrets around as far as amusement parks go.

My advice for anyone planning to visit Kennywood: Go with the expectation Steel Curtain will not be open. I went for the first time last year and really enjoyed the park despite Steel Curtain not being open. Phantom's Revenge is an elite hyper and possibly has the best 2nd drop I have ever experienced on a coaster!
If you are expecting for Steel Curtain to be open when you visit Kennywood you may have a bad time at the park.

--the concrete footers have not experienced any subsidence, cracking or issues / soil compaction tests before construction were done and the soil is excellent for stability / the footers have been measured with lasers and have not moved outside of tolerances / any reports to the contrary are false
--the ride's issues are minor but there is a cost to correct / this is where the issues present--who is going to pay for remediation?
--concept and design process is fluid for any project as it was with SC / KW wanted certain specs (i.e records), wanted SC to fit in a specific area with an unique and restrictive footprint and had a modest budget
--during design SC was "value engineered" / conventional lift / 2 train ops / pressure was put on S&S from KW which put pressure on their staff- and subcontractors / engineers / to meet lofty specs without lofty budgets including decreasing the budget after RFPs were solicited
--the supports were engineered closer to the margins to save money and also fit the restrictive footprint
--4D CAD and computer simulations of load were calculated and within limits
--despite all of our tech it is impossible to always 100% simulate every force for every design / this is in all industries--construction, autos, space, defense , aviation ect
--the ride has some forces in excess of what was simulated but not in excess of safe tolerances / this would not be an issue had the support structure been built with a higher margin of load but it was not to save money
--videos online show the movement of the structure--again well within safety tolerances--but not within economic maintenance tolerances
--steel as well as all structures and construction materials MUST flex, expand and contract / if steel did not have this ability it would behave like glass when stressed and loaded
--repeated flexing does cause metal fatigue but that is calculated and engineered into the designs and maintenance / think of a nuclear submarine when it dives the hull contracts several inches at max depths
--the movement of SC during operations has created harmonic resonance which accounts for the rattle as reported and felt / this leads to excessive strain on the bolts compounded with the excessive movement of the supports thus causing the design life of the bolts to be much shorter than anticipated / the bang heard during operation was a single bolt shearing (absolutely no danger to anyone) each bolt attachment is safety redundant multiple times
--high grade bolts are expensive and time consuming to replace / supply chain shortages compound the issue
--the train issue was a spec change w the restraints per the State requiring changes / this is not as uncommon or surprising as it might sound / cities, counties and states change specs especially fire and safety specs literally all the time during construction requiring retrofits / train mods were a one time thing and have been completed / again no safety issues just dealing with bureaucratic red tape but resolved (anyone dealing with government understands this)
--solution has already engineered and--i have already shared more than i should hence this throwaway account--but the additional supports have already been engineered and are in production / will be installed this off season / new bolts throughout / retesting w water dummies and recert to happen this off season
--the lawyers just have to figure out who pays the bills / this is what has taken so long and the issue is how much KW has to pay bc of the value engineering pressure but at the same time how much S&S has to pay because at what point should they have drawn a hard line and said you can't meet all of these specs AND have a low maint / reliable coaster with this budget
--a new net will be installed where the track is at it lowest point over the walk way
Summation: SC is safe, needs additional supports to lower maint costs and increase reliability and overall design life / safety is not and has not ever been an issue
All parties are committed to having the ride open next season and the fix is the fix and no more issues other than regular long term maint

Wait they were offered a Mack Hyper Coaster for only 28 million!? Why didn’t they go with that? S&S coasters are pretty much always unreliable. And even if the Mack coaster was a bit out of there budget they probably could have gotten a smaller scale B&M for around 25 million, like a floorless coaster, dive coaster or a smaller wing coaster. I mean Gate keeper only cost Cedar Point around 30 million.

@@cmartin2304 You hate B&M because you don’t like one of there coasters? I don’t really think your understand what’s going on here. First of all when Cedar point buys coasters they don’t want every coaster to be a super intense fast one. Gatekeeper is a coaster that appeals to all audiences and is a perfect “beginner” coaster for people who aren’t ready for the bigger ones like Steel Vengeance, Millennium, Maverick and more. Second of all not all B&Ms are “boring”. I mean Raptors literally in the same park?! You think that’s boring. There were even rumors that Kennywood had RMC look for viable space for a coaster.
Rumor is: RMC propesed a coaster on the hill where Kennywood owns the hill besides Steel Curtain and the old train depot at the bottom. RMC tested the stregth of the hill and found it was unsuitable.
All just a rumor but big missed opportunities if true.
Also, odds are Kennywood can afford it, just doesnt want to pay it for it when they feel its S&S's fault, regardless of its true or not.

It is sad that this coaster is so problematic!!! This is by far the best coaster in the park in my opinion! I really hope things work out and they'll have it running again. I had my doubts when I found out this was going to be manufactured by S&S because well, Galeforce in Ocean City, New Jersey was an S&S train wreck as well. I believe there was a lawsuit with that coaster as well.

Yea this ride is on my list at some point. The problem with this ride. Its a prototype. Hence the cheap price tag. When parks opt in to buy prototype rides its much cheaper but its taking a risk of the ride not working or working well.
