Thanks to you. I now have dozens of pages of light pressure, heavy pressure, light pressure going in every imaginable direction. You’re teaching is invaluable!
Hi Emma, thank you for your videos. A little suggestion for those on a really tight budget. When I practice brushstrokes and do not want to use my “cheap” watercolor paper I use poster paper. 1 Sheet at the $ store can be cut into 8x10” pieces. I then use just my brush and water. I can practice as much as I want and when it dries I can reuse that piece again and again. I have found that the blue colour poster paper gives the best contrast while practicing. I often do this as a stress reliever or doodling while on the phone.
Thank you Emma. I am over 70 and been trying to paint in watercolour for years. Watching you paint these leaves has helped me to now practice my leaves in a more relaxed way. God Bless
I am a total barney newby at this, only did one day, went to Blick to get paint and brushes and paper and now am watching you! This is just what I needed, thank you, thank you, thank you!
Went back and am repeating your drills and strokes series. It makes more sense to me now than first time you are a great teacher please stay on you tube
I would love a drill for roses and peonies I can practice every day! I struggle so much with them. Also a video on composition of florals and leaves! Thank you for being such a fabulous teacher!
I enjoyed not only the techniques, but the reminder of just how endless the shades of greens there are. Just step outside and see how many you see....there are so so many!!!
Thank you soo much Emma! I don't know if you realise just how much you've helped me! For years I've been wanting to give watercolor a try. I've been watching you for almost 2 months. I know with all of my heart I can do this. Just as a young girl I learned how to sew and I became very good at it making my three daughters and even a son their clothing, not to mention clothing for myself and friends. It was never about money. I am not a business woman. The same will be for this art. I will do it for the pure joy of creating beauty. I'm still saving for all the supplies. My Amazon list is ready as soon as my pocketbook is.
I love the way u explain and teach!!!!! I am 70 and year old, but my dear thank u so much for such honest Water Colour Strokes!!!!!! U inspire me sooo much Today I am going to paint!!!!! Please teach More!!!! 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 🙏 Uma Agnihotri
I like how you bring your brush back down to the stem as this keeps the puddle in a more natural spot. Thank so much, my practice leaves looked way better. I even got out a real photo I took of one of my plants and tried replicating the leaves, very fun and relaxing..
LOVE your drills. More of these types of videos please! I feel like there are a ton of drills for hand lettering and it's hard to find with watercolor. My leaves already look a ton better after doing these drills. Thanks so much. Your videos bring so much joy into my life!!
I love that you share your talent with us!! I have never had a desire to paint since I only do stick figures, but I believe that I'm going to the strokes. I've been following your videos and have decided to at least give it a try. Thanks!
I've just started to try to learn watercolor a bit ago. Thanks for your demos and giving me hope that I might get the hang of this! This leaves and your petals one have been excellent and encouraging.
This is probably the most worthwhile video I have ever done. Learned a lot and I’m beginning to see what I have been doing incorrectly and why my results don’t always look so good!
Thank you for such a great tutorial, you cover the really important things that many others haven't, it has really made me enjoy painting for the first time in my life, at the age of 41 😊
Wow Just stumbled on your drill tutorials I was struggling with watercolours and controlling the brush after following a few other artists on you tube, I couldn’t mimick the brush strokes and was getting disillusioned, doesn’t take a lot for that to happen Now you’ve explained the physical technique simple it’s clicked well starting too Excited now thank you
Thank you, thank you Emma! Your practice drills teaching are so well detailed and taught. I do have difficulty with water control and I know that takes a lot of practice. But you seem like a very patient and kind teacher. I do rewatch your videos over and over, so very helpful 👏❣️
Thank u Emma for this informative watercolour video. Its given me confidence to play around with shapes and sizes. Your absolutely correct, there is no such thing as a perfect leaf. Organic shapes are perfect too 🙏
THANK YOU. This is A TEACHING VIDEO, the best so far. I saw plenty but non did the first part you did, they directly start painting with words "light, press"!!! I really appreciate your effort and time. Best wishes.
Today water Colours Levo, with Breas help of Stroke Light to Darksid . Preacatical painting 🖌️🎨 Neutral and working painting -*- Strokes & Readmi Round fold ing.Nuter Drawing Sketches, practical experience.** Emma very Nice and Interesting Vizlistion process. Thanks you.❤
I have always painted precise lines in my acrylic art. I’m finding so much freedom in my acrylic painting by learning watercolor techniques!!! Love your videos. Have gone back and watched many of your previous videos as well!
Thank you so much for these wonderful drills! It is taking me a very long time to pick up the basic hand/brush control, and these drills are helping me so much.
Ty for actually showing how to make leaves as truly can’t draw. Now that using 100% cotton paper can see how much better it works compared to the Canson XL & the water does sit on top of the paper (once took 45 minutes for water droplets to just evaporate w air) but for practice must use up the Canson & it’s about learning muscle memory by practicing & if “cauliflower” places no big deal. Going to practice C curves as so far my roses don’t look like them but this helped so much!!!
I want to thank you so much I just tried doing some of these and the flowers from other videos too and I'm so shocked I managed to do something that actually resembles a flower with leaves using old very basic watercolors I had forgotten in a drawer! thank you 🌻
LOVE these abcdefg …..videos as I am such a newbie at watercolor. My friend and I have been trying to learn and going to our local art studio to paint with others of various levels of skill. Your instruction is really helping me understand the dynamics of this medium. Your attitude of just go for it……if at first you don’t succeed…..is priceless 💕
You have lots of links in the description (thank you!) but not to the Craftamo 10 brush you're using at 20:30. It spreads and springs back in a way the one I have doesn't. Would you mind linking to it for me? Or giving more detail so I can find something similar? Your description of using different colours to make leaves and letting them bleed into each other has already resulted in the the best leaves I've ever done, but I feel like it's harder than it needs to be because of my brushes. Thanks!
Hi Emma, I really enjoy your videos and I'm learning A LOT with them! Love them all! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledgement with us. One thing that I would like to ask you is How do you balance a composition? I mean, after choosing your palette, how do you balance the flower composition with big flowers, small flowers, greens, etc to get a dinamic composition? Maybe you could talk about it in a video...
Very well explained and real time demonstration is great. Not many people do this, all I found is speed up videos that really do not show anything. Thank you.
I'm using your drills regularly. Thanks so much for demonstrating a very clear and concise teaching style. Could you possible publish a picture of your webcam set up? I run a wee art group online for my grandchildren and you have such a good video setup for demonstrations.
I’m with you Shirley, I’ve been using watercolors for a couple of months. I wanted to be perfect from day one, just who I am, but quickly realized that that’s not how it works. Since I found Emma, I have learned that I need to start at the beginning. Emma is so good about making the beginning fun. Thank you Emma!.❤
Excellent Tutorial Emma! I've been drawing with colored pencils, but I've now been experimenting with watercolors. I love what it adds. Your drills are what newbies like me need. Thank you and good luck on your new undertaking.
Fantastic video! Thanks for creating this step by step drill tutorial. It's very helpful as it demystifies leaves and flowers, something that appears effortless but can be frustrating without proper technique. My ability transformed thanks to your guidance and I feel more confident already, after only a few attempts at watercolour. By the way, I am actually using the ink from inside my Ecoline watercolour brush pens which I scribble onto a plastic pallet and then use a watercolour brush to apply the ink to paper. It's an effective substitute for watercolour paint for those who don't yet have a set. Thanks again!
Excellent! Idea practice strokes then make a sketchbook pageOrdering an etcher SB to start recording my skills progress. Thank you for ideas, inspiration and instruction. You’re a very good teacher. Look forward to more like this.
This was super useful, thank you Emma. At first when the music kicked in I was like 'oh no, she's not going to tell us exactly what to do!'... but I really enjoyed the chill music and just seeing what happened on my page. Good idea. Very relaxing too!
Thank you for sharing these concepts. Perhaps you might consider moving your light source, (or maybe use more pigment) and prevent glare on the wet paint, so that the wet line-in-progress is visible? It’s not showing up too well. Once you’ve completed a line, the actual paint you’ve laid down does start to dry and not be as invisible, but it would be more enjoyable (and possibly more helpful ) for the student to be able to watch a more direct, visible line of paint at the time the brush is making the different marks. This is a lovely, helpful practice concept, and I appreciate your taking the time to share these valuable insights. Best wishes!
Thank you sooo much for this entire channel! I have wanted to learn watercolor for so long. I have the paints and paper and brushes but am so afraid of failing first thing so I haven’t touched them. I’m so thankful to have your graceful lessons to help me!
thankyou Emma for a fantastic tutorial. I am new to watercolour ... my husband has just got my fire blazing in my studio, so when its its warmed up I am going to practice my leaves technique.
Thank you for this great video. As i watched you do the leaves on your good paper listening to the background music, i realized I was mesmerized and so relaxed. I'm going to review this video again this evening and practice and relax. Thank you again Emma.
Thanks to you. I now have dozens of pages of light pressure, heavy pressure, light pressure going in every imaginable direction. You’re teaching is invaluable!

By far the best ever beginner’s tutorial thank you for breaking it down and growing nice and slow 🙏🌸
I am a total barney newby at this, only did one day, went to Blick to get paint and brushes and paper and now am watching you!

Amazing content and pace. Thanks for the lessons Emma!
Went back and am repeating your drills and strokes series. It makes more sense to me now than first time you are a great teacher please stay on you tube
The easy going tempo of you painting makes it so relaxing & enjoyable....thank you!!!
I would love a drill for roses and peonies I can practice every day! I struggle so much with them. Also a video on composition of florals and leaves! Thank you for being such a fabulous teacher!

Omg! I’ve made a “break through “ on leaves thanks to this video! Thank you!
This was the most relaxed I have been painting! Thank you Emma
This is good not only for beginners, it's a good way to warm up your hand for the day. 👍
Yes! You are so right!!

Love this, Emma! Practice is my downfall - I want things to look good the first time I do them and yet I know how important practice is.
This is me as well 🙈🤣I expect to be perfect immediately and get frustrated when it's not, but I've learned to practice and I'm enjoying practicing xx
I can so relate Diana!! I'm starting to do more practicing!
I like how you bring your brush back down to the stem as this keeps the puddle in a more natural spot. Thank so much, my practice leaves looked way better. I even got out a real photo I took of one of my plants and tried replicating the leaves, very fun and relaxing..
thank you! so many people teaching beginners forget these topics and this is so important.😊
LOVE your drills. More of these types of videos please! I feel like there are a ton of drills for hand lettering and it's hard to find with watercolor. My leaves already look a ton better after doing these drills. Thanks so much. Your videos bring so much joy into my life!!
I want to tell you how enjoyable it was to paint along with you and learn so much! Thank you
I love that you share your talent with us!! I have never had a desire to paint since I only do stick figures, but I believe that I'm going to the strokes. I've been following your videos and have decided to at least give it a try. Thanks!
Yay. Turn those sticks into strokes!
I believed I just meditated. That was amazing just to watch you paint. Please do more real time videos of just you painting. It’s beautiful
It’s also good to tap that first drip on a paper towel, this is very watery. A lot of fun, but flow back is messy.
actually useful watercolour video among the countless "beginner tutorials" ive seen here. pressure and water control is so important
Thank you for such a great tutorial, you cover the really important things that many others haven't, it has really made me enjoy painting for the first time in my life, at the age of 41 😊
100% agree with Harriet H. Most enjoyable. As a rank beginner I like your teaching style.. 😃
Wow

Love this, thank you Emma! Can’t wait for another video like this, focused on florals like you mention, instead of leaves!
Yes, some people seem to do strokes and a flowers petals are made, or they lift, and a highlighted petal appears.
Sweet.. exactly what I need to refresh skills I had years ago .. just purr fect😻
Simply, AMAZING.
Great instructional video. I prefer using good, quality paper even when I practice. It shows me what I am doing wrong. Great video!!!
