- The Edale Skyline Challenge traditionally starts in Hope at Losehill being the first of many peak summits. The distance is Approx. 21 miles with around 1200m / 3900 ft of elevation gain.
The challenge is be completed in under 12 hours and does require a high level of endurance but I would highly recommend this hike to all that are reasonably fit and perhaps tackle over a number of days, the views can be breathtaking (We were not so lucky on this occasion).
As ever, it is highly recommended to do this with good visibilty and weather, there are many stages with limited views. Navigation equipment is a must! You will see in the video how spontaneous "White Outs" can easily complicate your journey.
Kinder mountain rescue team kmrt.org.uk/ can be reached in emergencies by dialling 101.
Parking: S33 8WJ (Very limited spaces)
The route:
Starting at Losehill you will travel along the Great Ridge bagging Back Tor, Hollins Cross, and Mam Tor trig points before crossing the road up Rushup Edge and onto Brown Knoll.
Next stop is up the "Swines back" and onto kinder Low trig point before making your way into the kinder Scout. Grindslow Knoll is an optional peak that many deem unecessary and as you will see from this video low visibility can cause issues with several pathways levaing to many different directions (We lost around 35 minutes & gained about 100m).
Heading across Edale Moor edge and across Upper moor you begin the decent to the forrest edge and follow the old Roman road onto Winhill.
My recomendation would be to hit Mam Tor when the sunrise/set as it can be quite spirittual but be preparred to share this experience with many others as it is a popular event.
Barry Baggins will return in the summer to complete the "Ellis Edition" of the Skyline which starts and ends in Barber Booth........
Hopefully the views will be more apprealling for the sequal.
