I am from Russia, Western Siberia to be exact (no, it’s not that bad ). My husband and I have lived
in Asheville since 2004 and absolutely love it here! In 2015 we became parents to a baby boy, Dmitry (named after my grandfather). And in January 2020 Dmitry became a big brother to Katya. We share our home with 2 dogs: Puma and Romeo, who are a pitbull and a jack russell (no, it’s not that bad 😆 ).

Everything you mentioned was so very correct and necessary for people considering a move here. I have heard of cutting through the Parkway to avoid traffic. At age 21 I moved to Asheville from Miami in 1992 and lived there until 2001. I fell in love and made life long friends. My friends tell me that Asheville is nothing I would recognize now. Heard it's way expensive and overcrowded. Planning a vacation soon, I hope I won't be disappointed.

Love this video. Thank you. My mom lives in Hickory and I wanted to move closer to her but didn’t find anything too appealing about the major cities in NC, I do however enjoy all of the outdoors activities to do there. Then I finally gave Asheville a little research. Coming from Austin I know exactly what you mean when you step out of the city limits, as soon as you drive out of Austin, you’re basically back in Texas. I love that Asheville has a huge lgbtq community. I wanted to be in a city that wasn’t too big, and wasn’t too small town-ish either.

Wow! I commented on another video of yours and this one has answered so many questions! As I commented previously, we are arriving around the 6th of September. It's coming up so quickly!!! The drive will be long, but we cannot wait to begin exploring Asheville and all it has to offer. Are there any local pet groups, shelters, or rescues I should look into? I am a licensed vet tech and will be pursuing a job there in that field. I also love to be involved in local organizations that aid the community in pet health and owner education.

Thank you for putting together such an awesome list. I'm born and raised in NYC and looking to possibly move away when I retire next year (2021). Asheville NC is on my list of options, but with all of the civil unrest going on around the country, I don't know where is safe for a person of color. So sad :-(

As a person of color you should not be worried in the least bit about moving to Aville. This is really what I HATE about America, people make so many ridiculous assumptions about the south. Aville is probably the most tolerant places for a black person to live. I am an American but I will NEVER move back to that hell hole called America. However I will say if you had to move somewhere in the south to get out of the hell hole that has become NYC, a place I lived and worked in for many years, I say go for it girl. Aville will treat you properly nice.I simply prefer living in Copenhagen Denmark as I can leave my doors unlocked without some meth head or crack dealer breaking my door down. Good luck America, your gonna need it!!!

I've been looking into Asheville for years, need to make the trip there, made a trip to cary and surrounding areas years ago, loved it, although being in private practice and thinking about starting all over again was the deciding factor in not moving, however, now looking at retirement my site is on Asheville again, not the city itself more like 15-20m away from the city. Can you recommend surround areas? Also looking for a min of 2 acres. Thanks

Hendersonville area, Mills River, Brevard, Waynesville, Weaverville, Leicester, Alexander, Black Mountain, Fairview. If you want to go farther, then Burnsville, Old Fort, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Mars Hill, Marshall, Hot Springs- all more rural areas.

I agree, it does seem like a perfect town for me as well and I can't wait to move next month! I think the cost of living is relative, I'll be coming from Miami where my $2000 studio just went up to $2300 so I will save a few hundred dollars on rent even with a larger apartment (even though there is a state income tax which we don't have in FL so my salary will be lower). And on top of that I'll be in a place with like-minded people; the flashiness is exactly what I am trying to get away from!

Does asheville have any beautiful places to take photos? Something natural and beautiful or photogenic or jokingly (LOL), instagram-worthy? I have seen Biltmore Villages and went to Beaver Lake, when I came to visit. Since Asheville is very hilly, are there any overlooks that are open to the public where I can go and take a photo of the entire city or parts of the city? I know Boone has "Howards Knob County Park" where you can see almost parts of the city.

Here's a tip, the reason to avoid patton is if you cant drive.when you're lane ends dont just get over and cut people off, give a signal if you are turning off,if you drive a long beside someone trying to get over we cant see you are signaling ,its not hard to get over without causing a wreck because you cant think ahead, most people will let you over,(if they are native) if you drive patton and you are entitled it's best to avoid it.

Hmm.. well, I see people's feelings are conflicted as ever about Asheville. I moved to Sylva/Waynesville area because the cost of living has pushed out the locals as it often does when a once unique place gets popular. If you could time travel to the late 90s, early 2000s, you would see what Asheville really was. It was a sort of haven for artistic & and open-minded folk. There was a real sense of community. But sadly most of the local bars, restaurants, businesses, etc, that made it so special are gone, replaced by touristy transplants from NY & FL, among others.
The spiritual aspect of the area is from the energy of these old, weathered mountains. I miss what Asheville was before the boom. So now I remember the nostalgic days long past & hope the area I moved to doesn't endure the same fate.
The crime has also really spiked. For its size, Asheville has garnered one of the highest crime rates & as of 2022, is the most expensive city to live in in NC. As a tourist town, one expects outsiders to want a piece of the pie but honestly, when the city makes decisions to put tourism over people's livelihoods, what did they imagine would come of it? Come to Asheville & find out. Just know it might not be quite what you are expecting.

If your thinking of moving to asheville. Dont people coming here is the reason why the rent is high. Most of the jobs do not pay enough to live on. And the public transportation is trash. Youll be waiting 30 to an hour an half for the bus. Also ive never reached atlanta in 3 hours more like 5

Speaking of super mild winters...there are cities and towns in Canada that historically enjoy warmer winters than Asheville - as defined by a warmer average winter temperature (December, January, and February).
If you dig a little bit deeper, you'll discover the source for the information (below) is NOAA (a US government agency!). So please copy/paste the following google searches (specifically Google’s search engine!). And don't forget to factor in the ultra-mild Canadian winter nights.

      1. Asheville, North Carolina average winter temperatures
      2. Race Rocks, Canada average winter temperatures
Are you surprised by the fact the winters are warmer in Race Rocks, Canada than Asheville, North Carolina?

Asheville is freaking Awesome. I miss home. Wanna buy my TN lake house so I can go back??? House swap? And I am Native, Republican, and I judge no one! No one can judge me. Agree to disagree is my view. Which is the view of all I know!
The “Artsy” makes it amazing, Uhmazing and Aamazing!!! 😂Yes, our native driver’s are the best drivers in the world and we laugh at the folks from the flatlands!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣Despite the rumors … the majority of us use deodorant and prefer our Western store bought fragrances! 😘 Asheville’s location is perfect for short distance travel to many fabulous cities! Lastly, the beer venues are great for mingling though I hate the stuff!!😮😊 Don’t knock my Asheville! ❤

From a lifelong resident, it has gotten to be too expensive to live here. It is a tourist trap and she's right about the job situation. Former city government chose to push tourism and forced factories to close.
The infastructure is lagging behind, not enough water and traffic sucks!
This lady is giving you a false picture of Asheville in order to make money as a realtor.
The REAL LOCALS resent all the outsiders moving in and forcing their politics on us. Do us a favor and stay away!
Oh by the way, locals know how to drive in the snow. It's all the FLORIDIOTS and flatlanders that cause problems. Winters can be nasty here!

Most of the town is to busy tearing itself down right now. Looking more like a small Seattle at the moment. As long as you don't have a different set of views outside of liberalism you'll be alright. If you do you'll be judged before saying a word.

@@leobebb8607 Well Leo I lived in Asheville from 1984 to 1993 and I will say that Aaron is totally correct. I considered myself a hardcore liberal, my parents were ex-hippies so I grew up in the lifestyle so I know what it is like to live in a very liberal town and even lived in a commune when I was very young. I now live in Copenhagen Denmark and I can say that while living in A'ville if you did not have all the "correct" liberal POV even back in the late 80's to early 90's you were excommunicated from the liberal establishment. I frankly love the lovely scenery of A'ville and many of the locals. However I really had to get out of there due to the lack of openess to different ideas that existed outside the liberal community and this was many years ago. I personally could care less what people choose to believe in but when they begin excluding others because their beliefs do not fit with their ideological standards then it becomes problematic. I still have relatives living in Aville and it seems to have attracted just as many of the same groups as you see flocking to San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. Nothing wrong with these places but it is certainly reflective of attracting a certain mindset and in some cases excluding others. Oh well, I no longer live there nor would I ever consider moving back, however it is a shame that it has dev eloped such a mono-culture of people at the price of exclusion of others with different points of view.

Asheville is not weird...by very definition, if you are TRYING to be weird, you are NOT weird. Truly being weird is not fun...also, not an original idea. Boulder has the same thing "Keep Boulder weird", and likely others do too. BRING YOUR OWN MONEY....I cannot stress this enough. We came here and have STRUGGLED since arriving. My husband's business is doing well enough, but mine is non-existent...I do healing work, and everybody and their dog here claims to be a healer, and they do work for free or barter, so for people like me with actual credentials and 20 years under their belt in working with others, it does not matter. Everybody wants freebies or breaks on the price of everything...the cheapness is rampant. the borders of this small town are not solid borders, of course. What does that mean? It means that while there are liberal people here, there are also backwoods Appalachain folks who want to see things stay the same as always...get used to seeing confederate flags and having people argue to defend their right to do what they want, despite the cost to other people. Long story kind of short...we cannot WAIT to leave.

I am soooo glad after graduating from UNCA and moving to Univ of Colorado for Grad school to get out of this liberal hell hole! Now I am happy to say I have been living in Copenhagen Denmark for over 14 years and am glad to be out of the hell hole that the U.S. becoming now that Alzheimer's Biden is President! Good luck U.S., places like Asheville will be the first places to crash once the real estate market catches up with real market realities. As the narrirator has pointed out, I hear an Eastern European accent in her voice, so maybe she is old enough to remember the chaos once the USSR crashed. If not I suggest she read up on her history of Eastern Europe as places like Asheville will crash unless you are a doctor, or can conduct remote work. Good luck Asheville, it does not make me happy to think this place will crash as it is a very beautiful place, however all the new agers are people relocating to this place from the rest of the US should have re-thought their move to this place. To bad they have destroyed the place by driving up prices artificially.

Your message was posted a while ago so I hope you see this but I am sincerely curious about how you are happy in Copenhagen while saying that Asheville is a "liberal hell hole". I'm originally from Sweden (my family is still there) and my ex is from Denmark; both of these countries are what you would consider some of the most liberal countries in the world. Ironically, the issue that the democrats are pushing for are the exact rights you have if you are a resident in Denmark. Universal health care with free or low-cost medical treatments, for example. Or free education. If you had moved somewhere conservative, I would understand your post but I am genuinely wondering how you are happy in Denmark (though it is consistently ranked as the happiest country in the world. Why? Because of a good healthcare system, lots of vacation, work-life balance, free education and a lot more!). As far as inflated prices, it's happening everywhere, unfortunately, especially post-covid with all the remote workers. But Denmark is not in a cheap place to live, so again, I would love to hear your reasoning about why living in a much-more-liberal-than-Asheville place suits you and your values. :)
