HOWDY Y'ALL. The worst of the year is here and my entire soul hurts. What are some other terrible games I missed this year? Lemme know.
Honestly I the GTA remaster was OK, for me the worst was definitely the Bloodrayne remaster, at least the GTA remaster improved on the originals in some ways, the Bloodrayne remaster improved nothing and ran worse then the GTA trilogy did on launch, with pathetically low frame-rates, frequent crashing and the removal of cheats.
16:40 what are you talking about Final Fantasy 14 being free-to-play?
Dude I'm doing my own internet sleuthing and I'm coming up with: "Final Fantasy XIV is closed to new players, game taken off the market" so again what you mean ftp?
@@psyenz8946 For a majority of this year the base game and the first expansion were completely free to play, that's several hundred hours of content anyone can access. Things are closed at the moment because the servers are swamped.
Ah Baldurs Gate had a physical double pack with the sequel on switch. There was also Planet Scape: Torment and Icewind Dale as a double pack too.
About Nick All-Stars, Nick themselves is holding the game back. Stuff like alternate costumes came in very late just because Ludosity had to get the approval for each costume and Nick is super picky about it. Heck, the lead developer praised MultiVersus' reveal while throwing shade to Nick on his tweets.
Woah!
I remember that nickelodeon made a tennis game and this game has TONS of alt skins and voice acting. Alot of people started to ratioing Nick and Viacom in twitter for treating Nick All Star Brawl lol.
I don't even know why Nick and Viacom doesn't allow Ludosity and Fair Play Labs to add MORE alt skins for NASB but that tennis game has ALOT of alt skins?
@@legoidiot69 cause Viacom and nick are dumb as rocks
That doesn’t change the quality of the game. Sucks for the devs, but you can’t pretend a bad game is a good game just because you feel bad for them.
@@maninblack3410 i just go u tried ur best considering who u had to work with ~glares daggers at Nickelodeon~
I kinda feel bad for Nick All Stars devs. From what I have read, they actually wanted to add more stuff to the game, as well as giving them unique dialogues, but couldn't because of restrictions given by Nickelodeon. Plus, they wanted to price the game at $20 but Gamemill decided to price it at $50 instead.
I still hope the game manages to catch its footing soon. Power Rangers Battle for the Grid shows that making a major comeback is possible.
The way they phrased it ("our hands were tied") makes it seem more like a budgetary issue. After all, most of Nickelodeon's cartoons use union VA's (kinda ironic when you consider their other business practices, but I digress), not to mention that characters such as Oblina and Nigel Thornberry would have to be recast (as Cristine Cavanaugh passed away in 2014 and Tim Curry's 2012 stroke has limited his vocal range). Obviously, that kind of expense for a shovelware Smash clone would be deemed unnecessary.
Literally this week you can find a Twitter post by one of the lead devs in the game shocked after Nick announced a mobile tennis game featuring unique costumes and dialogue. It really looks like the whole situation was the perfect storm of Nick restrictions + Gamemill low budgets.
If I remember right, they said that getting voice acting for the game would've costed half of the game's whole budget. They were really, _really_ given a bad hand.
Yeah I agree I hope they can turn things around with that game in the long run. I'm all for giving things a second chance.
@@otaking3582 Oh yeah. I completely agree.
Would actually like to see Austin make a video on the worst and best games of 2001
Maybe I will, why not.
@@austineruption yes please daddy
Omg this is actually a great idea, and possibly an entire new series of videos!!
I agree. Lots of old games I’d rather play than these ones!!
@@austineruption love your videos
Here before the inevitable title change lmao
Huh?
how so
@@batmangovno when he first uploaded it he accidentally titled it "2001" instead of "2021"
@@Link_HeroofHyrule Would’ve loved to see that tbh
I actually feel exactly the same way about Mario Golf and I am so glad I'm not alone with my disapointment.
When i saw the trailer i just went "if people like that good for them"
For a moment i thought "They didn't JUST turn a golfing game into a racing game, there has to be something more to it"
But no, apparently Nintendo failed to apply common sense
No one plays golf to rush trough stuff, it is like turning a shooter into a dating sim, except shooters have a bigger demographic
you don't have to play the story mode to unlock stuff.
3:10 My biggest fear about the future of gaming is that all of the hilarious anime booba games have become predatory mobile gacha games instead, sort of like how tie-in movie adaptation shovelware games largely died alongside the Wii when companies realized they could spend less and make more money with phone games instead. Truly, when the PS Vita died and smartphone app sales rose past console games in Japan it was an end of an era
The vita games had hundreds of dollars in dlc it was not much better
Nah, the thing that will _really_ kill ecchi anime games is censorship, whether it be Sony's hypocritical policies or countries like Australia denying people's freedom of speech.
@@otaking3582 Yeah. They are flooding onto the Switch eshop like the anchovies in the first episode of Spongebob for a reason.
@@otaking3582 Not like much of it is lost but again, the post literally mentioned they've just moved onto the mobile market. Nothing has stopped man's desperation for NSFW.
Good.
I saw Melee fanboys saying that Nick All Star Brawl was going to be the quote, "Smash Ultimate killer". Than when it was released and people were harshly criticize the game those same people where like, "it was made by an indie studio! Don't criticize it too much!"
I mean, I don't thing these things are contradictory tbh.
The game has a really solid foundation, and has things going for it that Ultimate will never get, especially for more competitive fans.
It's pretty well known that the devs were dealt a bad hand with the Project, so "deflecting" the critiscisms to those aspects isn't completly absurd because judging by the post-launch support it's pretty clear they could've done better in different circunstances.
I don't disagree that the overhyping of the game did way more harm then good Lol. The game didn't need those types of comparisons.
@@masterdhegamer6661 Honestly when people say that something is going to the " *blank* killer" it opens the door for people outside that circle to judge the game more harshly than it otherwise should be.
@@edgyzackyt-edgelordzackari4889 oh definetly. But that whole discourse bothers me also because the people on the other side started to pile on a smaller game to defend Smash Ultimate, the literal best selling fighting game of all time.
Either way like I said, this discourse definetly did more harm than good for the game's public perception.
@@masterdhegamer6661 I love it when people regurgitate what the devs say. The devs continuing to "support" the game is like any other unfinished game getting patches and new content because they couldn't finish the product, regardless of any reason, before launch. Yes, they had to deal with suits that just want to see dollar signs but solely pandering to a niche competitive audience doesn't mean any criticism from an average Joe is null by default. NASB is a disappointment through and through.
@@WeldonSirloin I read that as "ESRB" lol. Cause my brain auto-corrected.
They *just* (unofficially, mind you) announced that voice acting is coming to NASB, so you've got that to look forward to.
The devs (especially the main one, Thaddeus) have been pretty open about how they *wanted* to do some of the things you had complaints with, but the game was rushed out the door and some of those requests Nickeoldeon straight up refused. They didn't let them use unique dialogue, get VA work, get unique costumes until now, etc.
Honestly, it doesn't even seem to be fully GameMill's fault. The fault lies solely on Nickelodeon themselves. They still take some blame, but Nickelodeon definitely seems to be picky.
Pretty sure he would've mentioned that if he was aware of it while writing this video.
@@GatorRay he's literally never done that before though
Apparently Nick just wasn't keen on the game doing well
But now that the game flopped it is too late to start investing in it
I doubt they care, the game was dirt cheap to make so they'll profit regardless
@@557deadpool True
@@rompevuevitos222 since when did this game flop? Did you literally just make that up?
Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl makes me really sad, since it seems like the devs really care and that if the game had been given more dev time it could have been amazing. They are still updating the game, and next year they're adding cross-play and soft-confirmed that they're voice acting. But the damage is done and so few people care anymore, pretty much the only thing keeping the game alive is Hungrybox.
Here in time for the typo on the title saying 2001
It only feels like that long a year
Somehow, Austin saying “Jocolby Fitzpatrick” during the Patreon calls remains as one of the major things I look forward to seeing in his videos. That name is just so fascinating and unique...
Bro I look forward to it in every video
Oh thank God I wasn't the only one who could only remember Jocolby Fitzpatrick in every single Patreon mention... That's sounds like a name that's too strange to be made up.
The nickelodeon all star brawl opinion is straight offensive man. Why play NASB over Smash? Because the developers care about the players’ online experience and are responsive to our critiques. They even announced voices are coming soon.
Too little to late for me personally
Popeye eating spinach to enhance his strength to absurd levels is part of his character, but I wouldn't blame you for not knowing that. It's safe to say that the character has fallen hard into obscurity.
The game is hot garbage
@@turboshazed7370 not really
@@557deadpool wdym? lol
It is the most blatant low quality shovelware
It's barely worth reviewing
The Slenderman demo clones have better content than that game
@@rompevuevitos222 so you've never played Melee, because this game is basically that
@@557deadpool We are talking about the Popeye game here
If you are seriously comparing it to Melee then you're either trolling or just being dumb
And Melee is one of the worst smash games in my book, so i'm not even praising it
16:42 correction: Final Fantasy XIV is currently no longer free to play, or even pay to play, please unhear about the trial up to level 60.
Wait what do you mean by this?
@@iTz_Cheshire Because of how slammed the servers have been following Endwalker's launch, they temporarily stopped selling the game and stopped the free trial.
@@MontyDotharl I heard about them stopping sales but dang didn't know they disabled the free trial too
@@iTz_Cheshire Free players basically couldn't play anyways, since paid players get priority in the queues, and I think at a certain queue size it won't even let them queue to login.
Well.. now I just want a list of worst games for 2001. Time me back in time, Austin!
Triple jump did a list.
Still waiting for Mario Strikers 3, but with the current gaming scape, I think it would be like they say, "careful what you wish for".
I can understand that Nick Brawl being disappointing, as a lot of the missing crap was because Nick/Viacom put a bunch of red red tape. So it's only a bit of gamemil fault. However, from what I heard Crossplay and Voice acting in 2022 plus more content, so even with Multiversus coming don't count NASB out just yet
People already looked at it and got dissapointed, fixing stuff now will not do much
With Cartoon Network's game coming out they even lost the bonus of being the latest smash-like game
Unless CN's game flops NASB is not coming back from that
@@rompevuevitos222 I mean, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid had similar issues as well (underwhelming visuals, lack of VAs, small budget) but there was still a good game at it's core
And over time the game fixed its bigger issues. If that can happen for Power Rangers, the same can happen for NASB
In 20 years, some guy who was a kid during this time will be like AVGN but Game Mill is his enemy instead of LJN.
Them, or Outright Games.
18:45 Those are actually characters made using a software known as Comipo, aka Manga Maker (as the rights got bought by the same publisher as RPG Maker and Game Maker). I used it nearly a decade ago on my family's old computer, and even made a manga version of Huckleberry Finn for a high school English assignment.
Oh my Comipo also saved my ass when doing Comics or storyboard requirments back in my school days!
I was also super exicted for mario golf and thought the story mode would be like the game boy advance version which i loved. Oh boy how wrong i was.
11:34 "Why is Helga Pataki in a fighting game?" I'm sorry, what?
That's like saying "Why is Pricness Peach in Smash Bros?"
Is Helga the Peach of Hey Arnold
@@austineruption Except Helga does actually kick ass and would pound your face in.
@@austineruption
Yeah, Helga’s the bully in Hey Arnold. She beats people up all the time. I actually thought it was a cool addition. One of my favorite cartoons growing up gets some recognition and it’s with a believable character too.
You quite literally have the same problems I also had with SuperRush it’s insane lol. I also thought a lot of the course design in SuperRush was very bland and forgettable compared to World Tour
"And this crow looking thing."

The thing with Nerf legends is that after Hot Wheels unlimited made old school toys so fun I really was hoping it'd be a good game.
"There weren't really any games that were bad this year"
*proceeds to show off some of the worst garbage of the year*
Yes and? It wasn’t bad clearly. It was horrible. Which is worse than bad
I've heard some rumors about GTA having those issues partly because it was not supposed to even be in the radar yet, but since Rockstar didn't have anything else to release this year they decided it would be a good idea to throw this remaster under the bus to cash-in... Probably not realizing how far behind the studio responsible actually was to get the game up to par - or even just deciding cashing in the hype was worth making the team work overtime to fix a launched title.
Nick All Star was screwed over. It had so much potential and I enjoyed my time with it but GameMill and Nick screwed over Ludosity with the project
How did that happened or how were the screwed over?
@@manamaster6 The dev team was literally limited in all aspects. They weren’t given a budget, they weren’t allowed to make unique dialogue for the arcade mode, costumes were held back because Nick wanted to sell them as cosmetic DLC, etc. And despite all that, the gameplay is till fun
@@catsorafgc nah the problem is y’all want to be like smash soo bad and it’s not

Nick all stars has strong gameplay, kinda wish it got more credit for that. But the total package was rough, almost non-existent features outside of online, I get that.

i got slightly disappointed when i realized 2001 was a typo, i think a series covering worst (maybe best too, or better yet, hidden gems) games of each year in the '00s would be really interesting, that specific time period is a bit unrepresented in this format i feel

Off topic Austin man your background music, randomly is fire but keep making these videos going into the next year
I loved you Balan Wonderworld Video, thank you so much for giving us a full picture of what that game was meant to, and could have been.
what Nintendo and EVERY company needs to do is make a "its been a year since release" edition where all the bonus content that will be gone in 10 years time when they shut down servers is on a new disc/cartridge so that way the complete version of the game can still be played. the PS3 and VITA almost got their stores shut down and thats been avoided for now, but the WiiU and 3DS are next up on the chopping block with no backing down in sight. im sure there are a good few games on those consoles that dont have a "complete version" out there. some cases that come to mind are already taken care of with being ported to the Switch with all their content, but its very few...
Moorhuhn? We Germans love that and hated them at the same time. In the early 2000s it was on nearly every PC in the country than the company behind them were involved in shady things and the bubble bursted. IP was sold and they do the games out now.
You made my day. Waiting for your videos like for Christmas gifts.
Moorhun is Chickenshoot and I remember playing the timed demo of it fondly... _Over 15 years ago._ I feel like boomer confessing these things... The passage of time marches ever onwards.
It's hilarious that the best NERF game might still be the Unreal Tournament clone from 99.
Sort of surprised you didn't go into detail on Sonic Colours Ultimate. Like, the state it launched it, it was PRIME Gametuber/"Worst of 2021" content. Kind of respect that.
Haha, brilliant placement of the Smash Bros baseball bat impact sound at 21:37
I'm fortunate, I finally got my Switch this year so I spent most of the year catching up on all the goodness I missed out on while ignoring all this garbage. Then Endwalker came out and I stopped caring about the real world entirely.
Just gotta say I’m diggin’ the Legend of Dragoon music in the beginning, Bale/Fletz were pretty damn comfy
The most disappointing thing about the new Dark Alliance game is how it seems to have no desire to build on the legacy of the previous two games. Yeah, we all love Drizzt, but he was never central to the plot they were building with 1 and 2, so it feels weird to see him taking over now. It's almost as if they care more about the character's name recognition, than in making a fun game that progresses the story that came before.
My most disappointing game was Axiom Verge 2. Was waiting YEARS for a follow up, and then it finally came out... And was nothing at all like the first one. Thomas Happ, the developer, stripped out everything that made the first one great. So disheartening
Damn I had the first on Xbox and was wondering where the sequel was.

I get that NASB was really undewhelming, but I think you kinda ignored that mechanically it's actually a really appealing game. For a lot of the more hardcore platform fighter fans it's more intresting than Smash in a lot of aspects. Who knows, maybe after the next few updates it'll be a was more robust package.
Hard to take the mechanics seriously when as it is, some characters teleport through platforms
@@austineruption that's a fair sentiment, even tough I don't totally agree with it. At least the dev team is really commited to ironing things out.

I was REALLY excited, when they announced Dark Alliance because i love the Drizzt Story.
Really a shame, they don´t do anything great with than License. :(
Seriously though, I dont understand the business model of "release a bad game and then update it in post." Like, cool, you get money immediately, but you also get bad reviews immediately. Everyone races to review a game when it comes out. No one races to review a game for patch 2.0231b. A bad game stays bad. I didn't even know all those updates happened for Mario Golf. I heard it was bad on release, and then I never sought out more information on it because why would I? "Oh maybe this game I had vague interest in is better now that 6 months have passed"? No.
Like, there *has* to be numbers somewhere that shows how bad of a business model this is. It's money upfront in exchange for a bad relationship with your playerbase. Ew.
VERY much depends on what kind of game company you are- a shovelware dev who just wants to squeeze something out can save money on final polish, squirt something out and get the sales they'd get for their fundamentally bad game no matter how much extra polish they'd have, keep a cheap skeleton crew on to drop some extra content, and then be done with it. And a company like Nintendo can rock this style because even if the reviews are bad they KNOW they'll sell well on brand alone AND they are the types who WILL keep these games around. They know their games will sell for YEARS, and so the games their future customers will buy will be the complete version and they won't get what all the early compöainers were all about.
"But the servers-"
My friend, this is NINTENDO- they will sell their "definitive editions" for the next consoles in perpetuity and for full price, and no one will be any wiser.
Ironically, the people for whom this IS a bad business plan are thus companies who DO intend to make "full" games but can't afford the bad PR associated with a crummy launch, since those companies would be the ones who need it the most. Like.. the reason this is popular is because games get more and more expensive to make every year. If the product can be brought to the market during what was once the unprofitable "polish" phase and thus quickly recover the money that's spent on them, which by the time the game reaches "polish phase" is these days as expensive or even MORE expensive than when old games reached the "finished phase", then by God there is not a profit-minded businessman in the world rhat wouldn't take that opportunity. Ultrarich devs who can afford a delay do it to maximize profits and ignores the reputation hit because they know the only ones who care are a minority of the audience. Shovelware devs just continues to squeze out games quick as they can. But the devs who might have good intentions but really need money as fast as possible? They need this model the most. But if it goes wrong, they take the biggest hit from it.
I was disappointed in Dark Alliance and I played it free via my GamePass subscription. I can't imagine the frustration of those who bought it.
Wonder if I should publish something small on GXC before releasing a bigger project on Steam, as a solo indie dev.
Austin, if you see this, I'd gladly hear your opinion.
I was confused about how you said that the Fast and the Furious game was slow since it looked fast enough for me, then I remembered that I watch UA-cam videos at double speed.

I'm surprised to see Mario Gold on here. I thought it was a pretty decent package, and I've had loads of hours of fun with it!
I'm right there with you. I just finished and I literally said, "oh wow" when he held it up. I've sank many MANY hours into the game and, outside of still not getting the wind physics, I've thoroughly enjoyed it. I frequently load it up just to play a round because it's a wonderful time killer. I get his gripes about the campaign because Speed Golf blows but I'm surprised by his disappoint. Dudes is blaming a game basically for adding a extra mode to play that he does not like that he does not need to play and saying its a bad game for it.... nah it's lots of fun.
At first I thought New World was an Eternal Darkness game of some kind from the first few moments in the first trailer.
Then saw it wasn't... then saw nothing again of it until this video and forgot about it.
That seems to be a pattern with those trailers between it and the DnD game which I only saw one other video of.
As someone from Germany I played all Moorhuhn games. Mohrhuhn Kart 2 isn't new. It originally came out in 2004. And it was the only Kart game I played as a child, because it was on PC and I didn't have a console. oh wow, I didn't realise they made ANOTHER nerf gun arena shooter. So back in highschool my programming teacher was a Mormon (or some sort of religious type who believed high school students ought to be treated like kindergardeners with highly restrictive arbitrary rules about what is and isn't approps like "darn" or "sucks" was a right up able offense) and she decided to start this "gaming club" for us computer dorks who were already playing counterstrike after school on the computers whilst waiting for a ride or whatever. However she didn't want to start the club because she wanted to help us organise or anything but she was "extremely uncomfortable this level of violence is happening in my classroom after school hours" and decided the only acceptable game for us to play in her club (as now to hang out in the comp lab after classes we had to be "participating in the club" or doing homework) was this nerf shooter which was a quake 3 arena total conversion mod. The game was really bizarre and so was she and I tottally forgot about all of this until now.
Man 2001 must've been a real bad year for gaming
Halo? Grand Theft Auto 3? Metal Gear Solid 2? Final Fantasy 10? Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3? Jak and Daxter? Devil May Cry? All overrated. Games were a lot better in the year 2000 before all the current-gen crap released to pander to people who only care about graphics. Hopefully, 2002 is better so I can justify my choice of a Gamecube over a PS2. Crossing my fingers Nintendo doesn't become like Sega
What's that song at the end of the video? It sounds so familiar but I can't remember what it's called or what it's from...
Omigosh, it literally felt like 6 months ago I watched the FF Crossroads video and that Kadokawa Jet Girls one too, dude these past years felt so samy I don't know anymore what year we are on.
Mario Golf got fun over time, but the initial launch truly felt so underwhelming for a Mario sports game.
Does Popeye ever actually live in a garbage can? From the episodes I saw; it seemed like he either lived on a boat or in a house with Olyve Oyl and their fussy triplets.
It’s a play on the theme song. “I’m Popeye, the Sailor man (toot, toot)/ I’m Popeye, the Sailor man/ I’m strong to the finich/ ‘cuz I eats me spinich/ I’m Popeye, the Sailor man”
In this case, replace the second line with “I live in a garbage can.”
Personally, I like “I live in a moving van” a lot more.
Edit: Also, those aren’t Popeye and Olive’s triplets. They’re Popeye’s nephews: Pipeye, Pupeye, Poopeye, and Papeye.
This was fun, I'm surprised the Pop-Eye Game is as bad as it is, the game of Yeet pretty much fits it well. XD
