When we saw the first look at Redfall, I knew something was wrong, I hoped it would be delayed again, but after hearing about development, I don't think it would've been saved with more time.
Man, learning about Roberta William's return to games this way is a little heartbreaking, not gonna lie... Though as far as I can tell, she was always more of a writer than a game developer. It's a bit of a shame that she didn't try to adapt to the new world of gaming a little more. I guess she's still burnt from King's Quest 8...
Game grumps actually did a really long playthrough/podcast of this with Roberta Williams. The main reason she made the game was to re-release it for older audiences and to act as a more accessible time capsule of what gaming was like for that time period. So saying it's a bad game doesn't really do it justice, but it's easy to say that without the context.
Part of me wishes she was ceo, with a modern veteran game designer/director under her. But then we probably would have gotten a modern game that paid lip service to classic games. It is heartbreaking. If anyone needs me I'll be above the bar.
I highly recommend “Not All Fairy Tales Have Happy Endings” by Ken Williams (Roberta’s husband and head of Sierra) to anyone who is interested in the rise and fall of Sierra Online.
That's funny, before i watched this i was watching an interview with Ken and Roberta cause i was suddenly feeling like watching something about the good old times. Infogrames is next
Not sure i would put Gollum on this list at all. To be dissappointing there has to be expectations to fail and i am pretty sure most people forgot this thing was even announced. Me and a Friend sure did.....
You have a good point, it would've been different if gollum had any hype or expectations from the start but literally everyone looked at it, called it a bad idea, and moved on, so its absolutely trash launch is no surprise
I agreed with Jake Baldino's take on a separate vid, which is that the idea of an actually well executed Gollum stealth game similar to Thief really isn't all that bad. They just flopped hard making Gollum
I'll still argue it's been a great year for gaming so far with greats like Dead Space, Hi Fi Rush, RE4make, W40k Boltgun, Amnesia the Bunker, Zelda, and FF16
This year is easily one of the biggest years for gaming in a long time, the fact we will get Hollow knight Silksong, TOTK , Starfield, RE4 Remake and FFXVI all in one year is incredible
The reason for so many games like this is because people are focusing too much on looks instead of focusing on gameplay and making it look good after. Story and mechanics are 90% of a game.
Yep, the concern of hyper-realism and everything looking life like really hurts a lot of games, ifs possible to have a solid looking game and have great mechanics and story but you can tell when devs/companies have a major imbalance
@@ori-yorudan it's definitely a big problem every game cost hundreds of millions of dollars to make because people will bitch if it doesn't look good enough it's why they have performance issues it's why they are rushed out unfinished because the costs have to be recouped in some cases because there will be problems paying people to continue working if they don't to say that can't be actual issue because these games dont look that good is the exact issue most of these games do look pretty good some are from smaller teams that DID focus mostly on the way they look instead of gameplay your view point is incredibly short sighted

As someone who platted Forspoken, I have to say they absolutely nailed the magic combat. Starts off slow but once you get all the abilities, combat is a blast.
I’m assuming that the rest of it makes it bad I’ve never seen so many people shit on a game that looks not that bad especially considering that I feel like cyberpunk got way more Grace
It's definitely going to be a cult hit. It seems like some people really really couldn't get on with it. While those who did loved it. It feels like in ten years they'll be people singing it's praises still and calling it an overlooked gem.
@medes5597 No way this is happening 😂😂😂. Let me put it this way. The combat is neither new nor improved from games we've seen before. It has elements from inFamous series and not even good visuals. The world feels empty af and there are little things to do. That's no gem. I believe the original poster hasn't played many games and it was her first encounter with that type of over the shoulder shooter.
A few of these ones hurt ngl, that's why now more than ever we need to have moderate expectations when it comes to new games that come out, no matter how good a game studio is or how promising a game looks it's always a possibility it'll turn out awful
To your point, we shouldn't overhype games, rather give it some time and make an informed decision before spending money on it. Pre orders are a big time Nope for gaming now.
if it was me three years ago i wouldve pre ordered hogwarts as well, but this time i waited to find out the combat is massively disappointing and not for me, saved i think 70 bucks?
@@SuryaGupta-te7fq I don't get the hype around Hogwarts. Played it, tried hard to get into it but the longer I played the more boring it got. It might be that I'm from a pre-Harry Potter generation and never read the books or watched the movies because everyone I know from my generation who played it felt the same. At least now I know that the Harry Potter universe is just not something I'm interested in.
I think we're seeing the effects of the pandemic interruptions in combination with the insane push by AAA game companies to build GaaS products. AAA games are more about monetization than they are entertainment.
I would argue that Crime Boss: Rockay City Has a lot of potential to be fantastic. The core of the game is a turf war and you run heists to make money to run your turf war. The thing that makes Crime Boss disappointing to me as someone who actually likes the game, is that the turf wars get overwhelmingly difficult. The controls are a bit janky on PC as well. That aside the game is actually fairly decent to be honest and the big name actors make it fun on another level.
When a major developer starts dropping flubs, I genuinely wonder what their priorities to gamers are and if those priorities have changed. I think it's all too easy to get sucked into profit over product, and it's equally detrimental. I'm glad none of these are on my current PC list.
I don’t think Gollum was disappointing because no one asked for it. I remember seeing the first trailer and people were like “Who thought this was a good idea?”. It looked bad even from the trailers. How it managed to even sell one copy for $70 is actually impressive.
Totk, ff16. There you go. Oh and Jedi survivor, Lego race, bramble the mountain king, annnd I don't agree on it but dead island 2. (I may have missed some games that are good but I don't remember.)
I wouldn't call Gollum disappointing. For something to be disappointing you have to expect something good and I dont think anyone expected this game to good.
Yeah it's true even if they've put more effort it's hard to make a good game with Gollum as the main character. When I read Lord of the Rings, Gollum is one of the characters I don't care much about, so hardly any game would impress me at all. I would prefer Tom Bombadil any day.... at least it would have been more entertaining also because almost nothing is known about him they could have made a very interesting game to that character.

Unpopular opinion: I actually really liked Forspoken. I liked the story and I was bummed that it got bad reviews so probably won't be getting a sequel or dlc.
I agree. It was more fun than people gave it credit for. It got bandwagoned pretty hard, but the game itself was a blast and is one of the games I actually completed this year before moving on to another one.
@@MrWar2050 Or we're going to get another Fallout 76-esque disasterpiece, which is equally likely. Seems unlikely it'll fall anywhere in the middle, it's either going to be hot garbage or phenomenal.
Forespoken should've been given way more time. It looked like one of those games that could really show off the capability of next gen gaming, but it ended up not even being a finished product.
I had a lot of fun playing Forspoken. It's a perfectly okay game and there was nothing else really going on at the time. The movement and magic were great. Like I wish another game would adopt the magic system and push it further with a stronger narrative. There's a great game that could rise out of Forspoken's ashes, I'm sure of it. I'd give the game a 6.5/10 probably. It wasn't too long to beat and was fun while I played, so mission accomplished.
The saddest thing about redfall isn’t the game, it’s the fact that it made the people who made Dishonored LEAVE the studio. So they’ll never be the same studio again.
@2:51 says magical parkour misses the mark, but shows really cool gameplay of magic parkour lol - @3:22 says the combat is less spectacular when fighting normal enemies, but shows cool movesets and destroying enemies with some badass magical attack XD. I guess Forspoken is something I have to play to understand, because it's looking good in my opinion.
I was absolutely shook for a moment there when you mentioned Roberta Williams, because that name is associated with someone very different in Australia 😂
I loved Wanted Dead...one of my games of the year for sure. It was straight up fun and knew when to leave my system. Way to many games these days are way too long in my opinion.
I remember them hyping the ps5 up with Forspokan, and I thought I was going to buy it. After the demo I thought I’d wait and thankfully saved some money
Honestly forspoken still looks fun to me even in all the clips you're complaining about. I bought it and haven't played it, but I really don't think it looks like a bad game. At the very least it looks fun. Which is kind of the most important part man.
Yeah give it a shot. I played it at release and it was frustrating seeing the game get bandwagoned. I had a blast during my playthrough. The combat and movement is a lot of fun. I didn't feel like I HAD to do all the world map things, but they were there if I was making my way to some other point of interest. All in all it's a fun game, not game of the year, or a 10/10 or anything, but I don't regret playing through the entire story.
Some games really get you from the start and I wish there where more like that. I hope that future games don’t have parts where you don’t like or are famous for that bad part
You seem to know what you're talking about. Care to mention some good zombie games for PC like that ? I've already played dying light & dead Island & I'm not into TLOU & the walking dead. Any other suggestions ? I'd appreciate it.
Forspoken is actually decent and I understand most of the criticism but it is not as bad as people called it out to be and the banter between the main character and her Cuff was not as annoying as people called it as I played Ocarina of Time when it launched and it's far from Navi levels of annoying. Story does take too long to pick-up and the combat and traversal needed a bit more polish and the writing and character portrayals is mid at best it's a decent game but not 70$ worth if you paid 30$ or less it is definitely worth it.
I could be mistaken, and if so, own up to it in advance. But, in defense of Greyhill Incident, it's no so much that the aliens look cheap, but, I believe the game is an homage to UFO paranoia in the '80s-2000s, and, this is quite honestly the alien everyone back then expected to find... The Grays. If seen through the light of homage, this game is actually pretty spot on, even if a bit spoofy at times, to how people were, and what they expected.
He and the rest of the crew are all perfectly suited for what they have been doing for years which is why they are the best channel for video game info IMO
I feel like people don't really know how to play that game. The difficulty and checkpoint system is probably supposed to be more like old Japanese arcady games like ninja gaiden. The Katana does do more damage than the guns but the guns are there to be just used to take out more annoying enemies from a far and if you aim for the head they go down pretty quickly. You are mostly supposed to get upclose and personal and use your katana and the hand gun mostly. Once you get the combat down, it is pretty easy. Only problem I can say is that it's a little too short.
Gollum wasn't disappointing for me cause I expected it to be bad. There was no way they could make a good game out of that story. Any other character would have been fine. A Legolas game would have sold like crazy. Stealth archery turns into badass archery turns into blades. Sick.
You just make a little mistake. The Arkane who did redfall are actually Arkane Austin, the Arkane who did Dishonored/deathloop/prey are the french studio Arkane founded in the city of Lyon. Both belong to bethesda but Arkane Austin is just a secondary studio. 😉
@@AnimeCatDad I agree. Like it's not the best thing ever but it isn't the worst either. I ended up returning it after I finished it because it wasn't worth full price to me, but I would definitely buy it on sale again in the future. The story was good for awhile (even if Frey made me roll my eyes quite often with her attitude) but kinda falls flat towards the end but I get that because apparently the writers were forced to re-write the story last minute. So ya know, for having to rewrite it quickly last minute it's passable.
I love how everytime I see forspoken gameplay it’s from the first hour of gameplay lol nobody cared to go further and see how good the combat and world is
I love the fact that in the Gollum devs "apologize post" they even misspell it. "The Lord of Ring: Gollum"? thought it was The Lord of The RIngs: Gollum"
Tbf the gollum game would be the same idea when you put the next elderscrolls in the cat territory. Their was simply no way possible that it could work.
Not really? The only moments i noticed it they seemed thematically in the right place (Not going to spoil it) but the end of the demo is a good example
I disagree, excluding the demo and that one guy who screams fuck like 15 times, there's been very few times where a character used the word, and when they do it feels genuinely impactful
I could see how Forspoken might be disappointing, but it's an ok game. The visuals are nice, the environments are fairly varied and each one has monsters and enemies unique to them. Sadly, it looks like they only played the first two areas which were plains and a desert, but there are other areas to the game and other abilities.
As someone who played this and platnium’d it,combat and traversal is a learning curve. I played it on max difficulty with manual spell changing. ( NO SLOW TIME OR STOP TIME ) It FLOWS so well!😏 ( See what I did there? Ehhh 😏 ) Love it!!! You’ll either love it or hate it. Turn up the difficulty and give it another shot. That’s my advice. 💜👍🏻
Out of all this junk, the Last Case of Benedict Fox seems to be the best of a bad bunch. It is a great looking game with a big map. If the devs release enough patches and fix the issues to an extent, I may try it out. Steam review score will rise if the game becomes better, so gotta wait and see.
The minecraft legends one suprised me a little bit. Haven't played it myself but i've only heard positive things about it. The entire point is about pathing issues, showing the most crooked and badly constructed bridge ever tho :D
I was digging through the comments to see if anyone else said it. That bridge was garbage lol. It barely touched the upper level and mostly just guided the units to their doom. The fact that some of them made it up there is impressive.
I'm gonna be honest, a lot of the negative posts ive seen about forspoken have been... Racially Charged, to say the least. So like thank you for actually talking about the actual game mechanics, because for the longest time i'd been wondering Why does it Actually suck.
Me personally, because I’ve finished/played every other game I’ve wanted and am now waiting for the next one😂 I actually enjoyed Forspoken besides the extremely frequent, annoying and cringe dialogue anyway😂
The fact that this 18 minute video only covers the first half of the most disappointing games pretty much sums of the current state of the gaming industry
@paulbuck4947I absolutely agree it fully deserves a Sequel! It would be the perfect time to release a next gen update, if any game is begging for it it's Alien Isolation. It's still my favorite survival/horror and remains in my top ten favorite games.

I think developers should be held accountable if a game is found to be genuinely lacking, refunds should be issued if for eg they give a game like gollum
Gamers should also be smarter and wait for reviews, or ya know, just watch the trailer at least. Also stop pre-ordering shite. I can understand being duped by Cyberpunk2077 or No Man's Sky or Anthem because they went out of their way to lie to people, do false advertising and/or control the review process, but with the Gollum game, you can see from the trailer that it is gonna be at best a below average game.

I loved all the old Sierra games, my childhood.
A friend and I*
I forgot, remembered a week before it released and was still disappointed
I agreed with Jake Baldino's take on a separate vid, which is that the idea of an actually well executed Gollum stealth game similar to Thief really isn't all that bad. They just flopped hard making Gollum
Bro, he put the alien game nobody ever heard of made by a single guy and hated on it like wtf
I'll still argue it's been a great year for gaming so far with greats like Dead Space, Hi Fi Rush, RE4make, W40k Boltgun, Amnesia the Bunker, Zelda, and FF16

Most of these games looked like trash as well though. So that can't be the actual reason.

Regarding Grey Hill Incident, the alien does indeed suck you off, so at least that's one positive.
A few of these ones hurt ngl, that's why now more than ever we need to have moderate expectations when it comes to new games that come out, no matter how good a game studio is or how promising a game looks it's always a possibility it'll turn out awful

My favorite part of Forspoken was the part where the MC and Cuff repeat "underwhelming, yeah that was pointless"
When a major developer starts dropping flubs, I genuinely wonder what their priorities to gamers are and if those priorities have changed. I think it's all too easy to get sucked into profit over product, and it's equally detrimental. I'm glad none of these are on my current PC list.
TLOU Part 1 is worth a buy on PC now, if you haven't played it yet. They totally fixed the performance issues.

ur right we all know it will fail from the beginning hehehe
Yeah it's true even if they've put more effort it's hard to make a good game with Gollum as the main character. When I read Lord of the Rings, Gollum is one of the characters I don't care much about, so hardly any game would impress me at all. I would prefer Tom Bombadil any day.... at least it would have been more entertaining also because almost nothing is known about him they could have made a very interesting game to that character.

@billysavastano119 that's probably the stupidest comment I have ever read in my entire life. Well done.

Lmao that Alien coming out of nowhere and getting shot. That was hilarious.
I might be the only one, but I actually enjoyed playing Wanted Dead
Same, I thought it was suppose to feel more like an arcade PS2/OGXBOX era game
It reminded me a ton of old school ninja gaiden. I loved it.
“But where it is a remarkable game is…. no where” had me 😂
