While not cheap(?) my biggest useful hobby product is a set (actually, two) of 1-2-3 Blocks or 'Machinists' blocks. They're heavy metal blocks which measure 1"x2"x3" and are used for aligning shop tools and machines. They're heavy and insanely useful for hobbying, particularly terrain building. Quickly able to measure 1", 2" or 3"...excellent for weighing down stuff or pinning stuff between them while drying (as they have 'perfect' 90-degree sides), etc. Want to make a ladder or walkway? Align your outside rods/dowels on the 1" width and done...want to measure each floor of a building to be identical...use the 3" side...etc. Want to glue some MDF together and ensure it's 90-degrees and straight, while drying? Use the blocks. You will find yourself using them constantly if you build a lot of terrain.
@@hawkthetraveler6344 youtuber called Offbeat Builds uses them extensively in alot of his videos, hes a pretty small channel but his videos are amazing. If you look up his "Scratch building Warhammer 40K Is Easier Than You Think " or "Lore be Damned! Terminator Techmarine KITBASH for Warhammer 40K" with the videos he shows extenseive use of Machinists' blocks along with magnets that perfectly shows how to use them.
The old Warmachine/Hordes blister packs used to come with little sponge backing pads to keep the model from rattling around too much. I turned a couple of those into pincushions for my own hobby setup. It's one of those things I haven't thought about on my desk, but it sure puts in work for me.
Instead of a pin cushion I use a little magnetic pin cushion that can store a couple paper clips an old x-acto blade as well as a few pins. Thank you for sharing the cable management nest that gives me some new ideas. I also think I'm going to return to using mugs for my brushes. I tried fancier devices but truthfully, I hate them. They take up too much space and don't hold enough paint brushes.
Videos like these that just make my hobbying that much more enjoyable and easier to partake in feel kinda rare so gems like these are always amazing! Just the smallest things that whittle down the wasted hobby time that every now and them make me think "I'm so glad I got that". Like I've always had the pin cushion so I didn't even think about how annoying it would be to struggle finding a needle or pin!
I use a paper piercer for my bottle unclogging needs. Has a handle like an x-acto, so i don't have to worry about keeping track of it like pins. And for pinning I use jewelry pins; they're around a dollar for a bag at the craft store, but they're uniformly sized and straight, unlike paper clips. No fuss model pinning.
I loved this video! For me, my favorite little hobby gadget I have *is* actually the little sectioned out plastic Jewlery boxes. I have a situation where I only get scraps of time, and my little hobby workshop needs to be easy to take down and put back up again. So when building minis I like to part them out, and put each mini's bits in a section of the box. Makes it really easy to get back into what I was doing when my 20 Ork Boyz's parts are nice and organized into their own separate sections!
Canadian here I love using Pill bottles the yellowy green ones with the indented lids, they make great painting handles come in all sizes some bases even fit so well they don't need any blue tack to stay but even if they are not a perfect fit a little tack and your good add some weight if your worried about them tipping and they come in so many sizes they fit so many different bases and also the sized make them easier to hold in your hand . Also I recently found those little condiment cups and tried them out and have been loving them, one of the first uses I had for one was to pour in some snow basing material and add a little pink paint and then just started stirring and stirring and made my own cherry blossom flock with it and just keep that in the cup and it is great.
1-Tweezers to de-fiber paint brush is a must! I got a pair of tweezers in every bin, and often use tweezers to pick up the right drill-bit, plastic bit, paint brush, anything smallish, ETS. 2-Lighter to singe off the tiny fibers that find their way on to the model is useful.
I saw the tattoo wash bottle on your desk. Thought that was genius!!! Figured that’s what you used it for. Bought one shortly after!! Good list!! That’s gents!! Fantastic as always!!!

I'm an early hobbyist and want my stuff compact and quickly accessible for quick jobbies when inspiration strikes. Been rubberbanding the main tools I use together for different tasks (snippers/sandstick/razor for building from kits, 3 sized paint brushes/washcup/painttray for painting.

The most useful and free of charge tool I’ve discovered recently is the notes section on my phone. I use it to dump ideas for my next hobby project, paint schemes, to do lists etc.
Great video. These are the tips that nobody thinks to share but come from hours and hours of hobbying over many years. The hairdryer hammock is amazing!
I got a little hand vaccum. My mom bought one for cleaning crums on the kitchen table. I asked for the same one and I use it to clean my space after sanding, basing or anytime i have a minute to clean my desk.
I do fret saw work. I use strips of sand paper in a binder clip then that clip placed on a Harbor Freight magnet strip I attached underneath my face vice.
One thing I did was prime the underside of my cutting mat to use it as a dry pallette. So I use the ruled side when building my models, then flip it when painting and if I'm going to drybrush or just use a paint I dont want on my wet pallette I just use that since it's already there.
Appreciate the recommendation. My mini journey just started and this stuff is the kinda stuff that keep you from getting overwhelmed. If these are cheap, what's the next level set of recommendation?
I’ve kept all the grey sponges that came in my old blister packs. Keep one beside me for cleaning my brushes. Giggle in the water a wipe on the sponge. It’s cleans the brushes so fast and you can use with brush soap and or conditioner.
I paint 10hours a month now, if i am lucky. What a great channel this is for keeping me positive about the hobby even when i wish i could get more involved in the hobby.
Sounds like the bigger tip here is organizing, and having everything with in arms reach. I glad you found a system that works for you. I bought a bunch of the hobby zone modular workshop stuff. The modules in that are about 6x6x 12 inches and they have magnets so you can snap fit them together. I got draws for bits, tool holders and chubby for sanding sticks, even a display self with plexi covering. It was not cheap and does not store every thing I need it was a worth while investment.
If you need any motivation to get all the bits off the sprues, try making sprue bricks. I had a lot of sprue laying around and an old 3rd edition Lictor, and I wanted him to be camoflaging. So I trimmed all the sprues down to about the same size, and built a wall out of sprue bricks at about chest height for my Lictor, with some even smaller sprue chunks laid next to the wall like destroyed wall chunks. I cleared up some space in my buckets, and I made most of my lictor's paint scheme a very simple grey.
Hey Jay. Been watching you a while and this is the first time I have commented. Love your channel. Love your humor. Love 40k/AOS and painting minis. Duces.
My 3 tips. 1. Nail clippers that look like pliers. They have a long, curved, pointy tip which is perfect for cutting bits of a sprew or cleaning up the nibs and flash. 2. T-7000 (black) or CP-0001 (transparent) glue. It's advertised as shoe glue but they also use it to glue a screen to a mobile phone. It's rubbery so models are more bump resistant. It's sticky but has a long drying time so you can position several bits at the same time. It doesn't melt plastic so you can twist off a bit and try again without breaking it. 3. A studio light that hangs over the desk. It's obvious but I never see it mentioned.
In reference to the cards, if you play any tcg or ccg there will likely be some kind of promo card or advertisement card in the pack. Those are also very useful (I play mtg and I use the weird Arena ad card that seems to come in every pack now.)
The two things that helped me improve efficiency were a whole truckload of Ikea bins, and a labeler. The bins are to help granulate my nonsense, the labeler is there to help me remember where I put stuff. If there's a bin and a label, fewer things 'live' on my painting desk.
In place of a pin cushion filled with pins, I suggest a single paper clip. Just unbend one piece by 45 degrees so that it's easy to insert into a paint container and you're good to go. It's big enough to see on your desktop but small enough to never be in the way and you'll never hurt yourself stepping on it.
pins/sewing needles are also good for antennas, narrow enough to look too scale, hard enough not to bend if someone knocks the mini over not sure how often it would apply to 40k, but i use it a lot on battletech minis, for both antennas and machinegun barrels tho you do need some quality clippers/snips to cut them, my old cheap hobby clippers are full of dents because of them
For the Superglue Bottles getting stuck closed, here's a tip: Leave the Bottle standing around open for about 10-20 minutes before closing it. The Bottle's own lid has a bit of a "spike" on the inside at the top that opens up the then dried up residue of superglue.
Bitz organizing sounds like a great video idea and will help you knock it out. I use a tackle box and a little compartmented storage box from Walmart and I feel like I'm still unorganized.
In terms of cheap stuff I've got a 20 pack of paper thin emery boards at the Dollar Store. They're really nice since you can just tear them into smaller pieces if need be.
Spray tin lids. They double up as little pots to hold small things and if you turn them upside down and stick some tape on them they can become a painting handle for larger models 😁
Do you use normal or distilled/cleaned water? As for small disposable storage space I like to use the plastic inlays of e.g. cookie or other (mostly) sweets/candy boxes. Those are plastic, often water proof (but beware, sometimes there are holes), transparent and have often various sizes for different tasks like an additional water dish to clean same color brushes or mix gooey stuff or simply temporary store small stuff. And regarding the net for your hairdryer - ever thought about a small cabinet on wheels for under your desk?
Good Ideas! Instead of straight pins I use A coil of soldering wire Usually getting up and changing my water is a good way to stretch my legs and back. But then you paint waaaay more than I do, so your but is tough than mine! I keep a roll of wax paper instead of using playing cards. I don't do any resin work however, so I don't know how well wax paper would work for that How do you keep all those cups organized so you don't lose anything?
I use Bottle corks, snipped paper clips and hot glue as small cheap paint handles for squads of minis, I like to paint all my marines in sub assemblies, so I use like 5 corks per model, I don't like using shades, washes etc. so I manually paint all my shadows and highlights, buying a bag of like 1kg worth of bottle corks is perfect compared to using $60+ hobby paint handles, also easy to remove hot glue from the model once done and doesn't leave putty all of the model where it's been stuck
I love your Layers of organisation! Like disposable brushes& pipets (stuff you throw away) in the 'last jedi'-mug, because that's also trash! 😂❤ keep your garbage in your garbage😅🤣🤣🤣
Playing cards work great as shims too. Not too useful for minis, but if you need to make microadjustments in some piece of furniture (like a pool table) to get it level, playing cards are your friend.
Can't afford and don't have the space for a bottle compressor for the airbrush. So I have one of those always on box compressors. So, I hung it from the bottom of the desk in a cheap mesh bag and it can els out nearly all the noise from vibration. Plus keeps all the cables away from the floor. 50 cents hobby hack. Also I wash my minis in sandwich ziploc baggies of IPA now and plop them in the ultrasonic which is now full of water and the difference in price and mess is incredible.
jay youre the goat! ive also been wondering how youre sitting or if youre on your knees, ive noticed youre at a nice shoulder rest position. and if youre on your knees how are you resting? do you have these nifty knee pads or something. i know this might sound silly but im sure as a pro painter you can understand haha. thank you! peace n love.
Lighter, for cleaning my glue needle, when a normal needle won't clear it. A little bit of fire and it's clear. A candle for stretching out sprue's to long tin wires, cut off the thickness you need and... Yes, plastic wires, that's what you then get, perfect for thin details.
Technically it does, as the water and little bit of paint left over will flow into the ferrule and cause the brush to split and shorten its life. The only alternative is to store them brush tip down in a special brush holder or on blu tac. Most people don't bother though and their brushes hold up just fine with good brush care.
This isn’t for painting technically, but I got myself a mini storage container with 9 slots and I store my bits in it. The little drawers are clear plastic and can be pulled out instead of moving around the entire container.

Ima need yo to get all the way of my back.
That's super easy, barrly an inconvenience.
I imagine Jay chasing away farts with his quick draw blow dryer
"100% covered in garbage" describes my workbench most of the time.
jay youre the goat! ive also been wondering how youre sitting or if youre on your knees, ive noticed youre at a nice shoulder rest position. and if youre on your knees how are you resting? do you have these nifty knee pads or something. i know this might sound silly but im sure as a pro painter you can understand haha. thank you! peace n love.
12:40 was the perfect opportunity for: "...and Han shot first."
Lighter, for cleaning my glue needle, when a normal needle won't clear it.
A little bit of fire and it's clear.
A candle for stretching out sprue's to long tin wires, cut off the thickness you need and...
Yes, plastic wires, that's what you then get, perfect for thin details.
Rather than mugs, there's a cheap paintbrush organizer that Dollar Tree sells that works really well
Why have I never thought to organise my brushes...
I never thought of it because I don't have that many brushes.
It's a good idea though.
cigarette filters are very cheap, come in varying sizes, can be cut to size, and are lightweight. Very useful for helping prop and pose things.
The irony of the disposable brushes in the TLJ mug.
Any reason the "throwaway" brush mug had the last Jedi on it? 😂
nice that you put the disposable, shit brushes in The Last Jedi mug. Fitting.
I use blue tack to hold small parts when cutting or trimming, saves them flying of and being eaten by the carpet monster 😊
Squirty bottles for everything. Alcohol and clean water for the airbrush and paint brushes. Even empty ones if you need a controlled blast of air.
Where do you get the 3M tape. There are so many kinds, I can’t tell which is which
Genuine question, I heard that storing your brushes in a mug like that damages the bristles, is that true?
Technically it does, as the water and little bit of paint left over will flow into the ferrule and cause the brush to split and shorten its life. The only alternative is to store them brush tip down in a special brush holder or on blu tac. Most people don't bother though and their brushes hold up just fine with good brush care.
@@Chazzmingle Thank you! I have mine lying down in a lunch box, and that's doing well for me so far
I've been using a toothbrush holder to organize my brushes 😂 it has four different slots so it lets me separate my brushes all in the same container
This video made me so happy! Now I want the top 10, top 50, and top 100 🤣
@12:43 “Look at this”
This isn’t for painting technically, but I got myself a mini storage container with 9 slots and I store my bits in it. The little drawers are clear plastic and can be pulled out instead of moving around the entire container.
does this mean you ran out of dogfact cards, or do you keep those for recorded painting sessions?
