Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth) | Broken Record

- At 70 years-old, Kim Gordon-the former bassist and founding member of Sonic Youth-is just now making the most abrasive music of her career. She just dropped her second solo album, The Collective, with producer Justin Raisen, who’s previously worked with artists like Drake, Lil Yachty, and Charli XCX. Kim’s spoken-word-like vocals on The Collective are the perfect accompaniment to Justin’s distorted trap-style beats.
On today’s episode Leah Rose talks to Kim Gordon about her latest solo album, as well as her memoir, Girl In A Band, that detailed her split with ex-husband Thurston Moore. Kim also delves into why she always felt like an outsider in New York City’s thriving downtown art scene. And she recalls Sonic Youth’s storied tour in the early ‘90s opening up for Neil Young.

ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Thanks for interviewing Kim,it's great to see her thriving even after the demise of Sonic Youth and making ground breaking experimental music and art as always.I'd love to see her work with Lee which realistically probably won't ever happen but Lee has consistently put out work since the end of Sonic Youth and I think they would make some great sounds together.
Awesome video, Thank you ❤
love you kim
WOWWW. THANKS FOR THIS ❤❤
I was listening to Sonic Youth the other day and it’s incredible and have been over the fucking moon w Kim’s new music. I wish them all health and happiness.
Kim is one kool thing ❤
100%
Why not also a playlist in Apple Music?
I feel like I owe Kim an apology...her new music is amazing and I wasn't really paying attention at first
She's amazing
Kim Gordon has never heard Yeezus?? Lies...
Drink every time she does vocal fry.
Keep your beats Kim. They sound better with you on them
What bad interviewer, trying to push the "trap references" who cares? It's Kim Gordon making great music. Stop trying to relate "trap" with Kim. Don't you know that industrial music from the 90's also sounds like "blow-out" speakers?
This interview confirmed my suspicion that Sonic Youth is a totally shallow and overrated band. Real class act to insult Rick Rubin on his own podcast. Gordon couldn’t write a Bon Jovi song if she tried, and they’re far from my favorite band to be sure. Just like the Pixies, but lack songwriting skills. This one hurt
It's called an opinion and taste. Quite clearly doesn't align with you. So spend your time listening to something else.
@@aceyage Well, I just gave my opinion as well. We’re all entitled, right? Just so tasteless to criticize a man on his own podcast. Yuck
@@trashyraccoon2615 It's completely fine to criticize anyone at any time as long as it is respectful. I haven’t even picked up on the mention of Rick as something that is criticism. You're making this a bigger thing than it is.
so you're bummed out that someone goofed on bon jovi? hahaha.
@@trashyraccoon2615just so tasteless to comment on a podcast about an artist you really have no interest in and consider shallow, overrated and classless.Obviously you opened the wrong door and then just stood glaring and taking what you heard out of context....go back where you belong...if such a place even exists.
