I'm growing turnips, beets, radishes, spinach, lettuce, and bok choy for my fall garden, but now I'm thinking I should add some green onions as well. They would be splendid in a salad with the other crops. Thanks for another inspiring video!
Ben it’s always worth reminding us all that we can still plant cool season crops. My wild rocket in a pot can often provide leaves during the winter in uk. Thanks for the video 🤩
I started gardening this year for the first time and simply cherish these informative videos! I learn so much and you make me feel like I can do it. I grew tomatoes, cucumbers, corn, butternut squash, parsley, dill, onions, beets, lettuce, and strawberries over the summer, and have started brussels sprouts, broccoli, lettuce, leeks, carrots, and spinach for the fall garden. Adding beets to the fall menu too - we loved them!

I'm still picking strawaberries, and peppers. In my herb garden, I have comfrey, rosemarey, parsley, chicory, oregano, lemon thyme, basil, spearmint, and peppermint growing. Thank you for the friendly reminder!! I was able to get out in the garden today, and collected some seeds & removed some overgrown/unhappy plants, making way for some quick growing fall goodies! Luckily we live in a fairly mild zone (9b) but nonetheless, I ought to make room for some of my fave alliums- garlic!
I'm in Indiana (Zone 6B) and sowed bunching onions in a grow bag about a month ago. I was able to give them partial shade (morning sun only) and they are now ready for harvest. We are still seeing highs around 90F and nights about 65F. I'm late getting my garlic cloves planted today. I'm hoping they pop up within the next 30 days and grow some strong tops before we get frosts next month. I've provisioned to put some row cover over them for a few months until they get sufficient top growth. It's too hot for lettuce here, but I've got new beds waiting for next month to direct sow.
Love your videos Brian. The are so informative and not over the top. Simple to follow yet they pack a punch in terms of the info they offer. Thanks and keep them coming. Would love to have a Hoselink. The faucet in my backyard is located in a very odd spot. From what I see, the Hoselink would be best since I can install it where I can run the hose to water the garden on my deck and also the plants on the side of the backyard. Thanks

Love the tips 😂. I would like to know if you remove the entire sweetcorn plants or cut the plant right to his base. I have grown sweetcorn in the raised bed for the first time this year with 95% success. I am trying a no dig/permaculture for the past 2 years. So I am not sure about the sweetcorn situation 😅. Thank you
I usually cut the sweetcorn right down to the base, to ground level, leaving the roots in place to just rot down over the winter. This saves disturbing the soil.
Job done 👍. I have cut it down and the rest of the plant is in the compost alley way between the raised beds, chopped up to small bits. Next job coming up 😂 thank you very much 😁
Well it’s the last day of summer as we hit over 80*F only to turn over to fall and a huge drop in temps to 60s tomorrow the first day of fall. It will be welcomed in the upper Midwest, US as it’s been unbearably hot the last two weeks with drought. We are expecting rain this evening and tomorrow 🎉. I’ve had 45 day cauliflower that I’ve been trying to keep cool with shade fabric as we need to have most fall plants in by end of July or early August and the weather hasn’t cooperated. Maybe I will try some lettuce today now that the weather will cool off. It will be in the 70s with a bit more heat later next week. Not sure if we will have a cold winter as it seems to be increasing temps the last 2 years. If it wasn’t for the frosty early mornings I probably could grow to Christmas 😲.
I'm in south west France but the weather (which normally this time of year is very warm) has become autumnal and down to 5 degrees already, with continuously raining. After a spring of flooding and low temperatures, everything was late starting, so I now have green tomatoes and small peppers yet to harvest. Feeling disheartened
First frost here doesnt happen til mid november, lets me take back some time during the summer when i couldnt grow anything besides tomatoes and peppers
Rhubarb question please? I have a big clump and having been picking and enjoying - however the stalks are scarred with what I think is slug damage? I scrub them before I cook and taste seems unaffected. However would like to have unscarred stalks - any suggestions? Thanks
This could be slug damage, yes. I would suggest going on a slug hunt/putting out slug controls. More in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/VJvUwkFZeOM/v-deo.htmlsi=uZm2EH92rQwTsd1i
I would only take literally one or two leaves from each plant, then let them grow on If they have plenty of leaves taking a couple wouldn't affect their bulb formation.
I do have a question. We grew potatoes in a potato pot and we waited a couple months and when the leaves got yellow we knew it was time to harvest and we only got super tiny ones potatoes and only like 4 super tiny ones. Wonder what we did wrong.
It could be a number of things: not enough water, particularly as the tubers were forming. Or not enough direct sunshine. Or perhaps the growing medium they were in just wasn't rich enough in nutrients? I hope you have better success next time. :-)
Anybody tried growing fava beans (with or without a nice Chianti…) this late in the season? Was advised it was feasible in the Paris climate. Just sown, so any specific tips much appreciated. Thanks!
I'm trying an autumn cropping variety for the first time this year (UK). They're called Luz de Otono and I believe they're the only variety to have tolerance to shortening days. I sowed them in late July and they're just starting to flower now. Opinions seem to vary on how hardy they are so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a mild autumn.
It's probably too late to sow them for a harvest this year. If you want to sow them for an early harvest next season, then I would delay sowing to about early November.
