Enjoyed your review. I’ve picked it up for my kids. About the performance issue: Digital foundry, in their analysis, commented that a 60fps may not have been entirely feasible using the Switch hardware with all the visual enhancements. They compared it to Mario RPG which was fully unlocked at 60fps but struggled in some areas dropping to 30fps and argued that a locked 30fps might have made more sense in these areas. Paper Mario is demanding a lot more from the hardware than Mario RPG. In other words, yes it was a choice, but they had reasons for that choice and it’s not indefensible as some are commenting. I normally prefer performance but for this kind of remake, I’ll take the visual enhancements over performance. Edit: I’d also add that the switch 2 was intended to release in 2024 according to reports so this game would likely have been a launch title. Possibly another reason why it’s locked to 30fps on the switch. But this is pure speculation on my part.
actually lock fps to 30 makes the battery life better, on a shooter like Metroid Prime Remastered is normal that targets 60 fps cause is a shooter game, but an RPG you don't need 60 fps, you need a lot of battery life

Don't regret repurchasing it myself… but I don't blame someone for not being able to justify repurchasing this when they owned the original. Btw, really appreciate you repeatedly making the distinction that this isn't a remaster or a port. I don't see anybody calling this a port, but I do hear a lot of people erroneously referring to it as a "remaster." It took just as much effort for Intelligent Systems to remake this game as it did for them to make an original Paper Mario game like Origami King and Color Splash. It was actually made with the Origami King engine.
11:00 i remember there was such a negative mindset that people weren't supposed to play video games as an adult back in those days. I remember being a child playing 007 on the n64 when i still got along with my brothers.
So there is fast travel. XD for some reason, I missed that and manually going back to Petalburge to complete troubles/quest. Glad I watched the review.
I missed out on it as well for similar reasons you mentioned Glen, had the N64 then didn’t get back into gaming until the Wii U era. Really looking forward to playing this one
Yeah, very similar here. I got an XBox 360 as a free gift when buying a phone (like you used to when buying a cheaper phone when upgrading) and that got me back into gaming. Glen
Loved the original on the GC. Unfortunately young me was starving for money so I sold this for a pocket change in some game store. Glad that I can finally revisit this game and it's just as good as I remembered it to be.
Played this back in the day, but I think I never finished some of the post-game content because it's always been in my brain as a non-completed game that I need to go back and finish (with each year passing making that less likely). I could always buy this new version and start from scratch, but oh man that backlog...
Great to see you got around to this. IMO this is the best Paper Mario /RPG ever made. The writing is what set it apart for me. Also, the Great Gonzales....
This game is #2 on my top 5 games of all time, but I've almost forgotten everything about it so its great to be able to get my hands on it with a few new tweaks!!
I havent seen anyone mention some of the cut paper transitions from the original, sometimes in the new version they simply cut to a black screen while the original had a fully paper 3d transition. Im not a fan of the try again button but i do know kids arent as smart or good at games as before. Itll be a 10/10 if they fix the framerate, and the section in act 2 where u escort punies as ive done it 5 times now and it is busted. They will glitch out and despawn. (And yes i beat it and prince mush and the mole the new badges are dope)
Yes, when watching a break down or comparison, it's huge. But it's subtle details that have been added such as the extra background details or the way the stage objects fold in. Glen
@SwitchUpYt agreed but also the screen space reflections on the floors and the incredibly overhauled shadow system that gives more weight and depth to the environments. Along with clarity, that feels like the record was dusted off and spit shined
@@keithpalacios9417It is really THAT good. Mine is in the mail, but I have beaten this game at least 3 different times, and everytime it is as enjoyable as the last, and when I get it I am gonna beat it again. Definitely in my top 20-25 favorite games of all time, so much fun and funny to boot.
Got my copy for $41.99 as Playasia was selling Japanese games for cheap lately so while that might not hold the deals they do are cool. I just happen to see Switch games staying cheap so I got it new for the lower price. Low end shipping in USD is around $7.90 so GameStop often charges us around that anyway so this was a steal. Even if the shipping is taking a few extra days. I love this game to death. Those deals might not last so grab what you can. The Switch is region free and most games support English even if it's a Japanese copy always double check to be sure they are good at listing the translations.
Man this makes me so much sadder that pikmin 1+2 was a port and not a complete remake after seeing how good this game looks; also really sad the first paper Mario wasn't fully remade
I beat the first chapter yesterday, so far I pretty much like everything but my biggest complaints are the backtracking and how you can't speed up the character's dialogue like in other JRPGs (i.e. skip to the next line as soon as I finish reading). There are soo many cutscenes and they take so long because of how slow the text boxes unfurl or whatever. I still am enjoying the game tho and I'm hoping that the cutscenes will slow down now that I'm (hopefully) out of the tutorial parts. I only own a Nintendo Switch so I hadn't even noticed the framerate, I'm just so used to 30fps at this point lol.
@@keithpalacios9417 great aesthetic and very funny, combat is engaging because of the timing mechanics. It's just as I said all the backtracking seems so clunky and out of date and the developers seem to think no one playing the game can read faster than a 5th grader. I also wish you had the option to skip cutscenes because I could see myself replaying this sometime and not every cutscene is absolutely necessary (especially the tutorial ones).
@@vanishing_girl So, you'd recommend buying it? I have the original one through the n64 app for the Switch, but haven't touched it. Too busy with Pokémon. Lol.
@@keithpalacios9417 TTYD is the sequel to the N64 one. Tbh I'm not sure yet, I'll keep playing and let you know. At times it feels like I'm watching a movie more than playing a game, there are so many cutscenes that take a long time and interrupt the gameplay and it's wearing on me. If you don't mind that, then I'd definitely recommend it. But for me, when I'm playing a game I want to just get lost in the game and play it, I wish it would just let me play the damn game already lol.
@@vanishing_girlif you’re already annoyed by the backtracking, chapter 4 is gonna drive you mad. And don’t even get me started on chapter 7 from the original. Thank god it’s much better here.
Totally a day one buy and I am having a blast as someone who has played the game prior! However, if I have to give one piece of criticism, I feel like the nostalgic tunes badge is...kind of a lie. I'm playing my first run with this on and the one thing that gets under my skin is that not all of the original tracks are present and sometimes, especially in the climactic scenes of chapter 2 and 5, the new tracks, to me, are just worse by comparison with no way to turn them off. So far my least favorite track in the game (is it a track? I still hate it though) is the red scull theme Flavio sings in chapter 5. That shit is GRATING! And you have to pause and listen to it in order to read the right number of hits for the tiki heads. This will probably be the number one thing I absolutely dread if I play chapter 5 again and there is no way too fast forward with B or skip it in anyway way so that my eardrums won't bleed.
As always great vid guys New hardware and 30 frames is an odd change?? Great for new comers and nostalgia but do we wanna pay another £40 for it? Overpriced in my opinion for essentially not a lot of additional content some have already played. thanks for the channel guys Always awesome to watch

@@Artersaand TTYD is so much better. Origami King tried with its writing unlike Sticker Star and Color Splash, but the battle system still sucks beyond boss fights.

Kudos on the review guys! I know this is personal, but the halving of the frame rate came to allow them to push the fidelity, there are effects in play that aren’t generally available on most switch version of games such as the Screen Space Reflections. Well anyway, in game like this that does not require fast camera movement id rather have the extra fidelity. I just don’t agree with this taking points away from your score. But I can understand the perspective. Agree to disagree.
The 30 fps and slow text is bugging me so much. Like good game, I don't think it's as great as everyone else. But it's a bit upseting because replability is way down since the game moves like a snail.

Played Mario RPG a couple of months ago. Although I liked it overall, it was too simplistic for me. The final boss was fun. I might get this for my son if he shows interest.
60 vs 30 fps does influence gameplay in this game since it has quick time events. So yeah, it’s a trade you do for better graphics. It is okay for me but the origami king didn’t need 60fps cause of better gameplay which doesn’t need to precise.
@@makasete30as someone who played the original, I could tell. Guarding and super guarding were made easier to compensate for the frame rate cut, so whatever the reason was, they at least did some work around unlike BiS DX.
I preordered, and picked up on day of release. Both to get my preorder bonus, and to add to the overall sales numbers that make a Nintendo want to make more of this type of thing… It won’t get played till at least Christmas though, as there are way too many other games on my list to play. This will be a good gift under the tree that the kids get to give me, that they have no idea about… 😅
The Animal Crossing-style voice samples whenever characters are talking was such an unfortunate inclusion. It’s so distracting to read the various Toad’s dialogue all being accompanied by the same squawk as the Toads in the mainline games, especially when you consider the deadpan delivery many of these lines need in order to produce the intended comic effect. The Paper Mario series exists in another universe than the mainline series-these aren’t the same characters. The Paper Mario characters have always been mute, allowing the player to imagine their voices. Paper Luigi’s dialogue isn’t written with an Italian accent, for instance. I wish Nintendo would include an option to switch the voices back to the original typing sound effect.
In the original Japan release of the GC version it was a Frog. For some reason it was changed when made global. Still, I miss the cricket and wish we could choose between the two.
So many people hate that the game runs on 30fps instead of 60fps. The game looks like it's runny just fine with 30. Also, there are others that they decided to go with the censored version of the game. Which is a shame, really

I hadn't bought a Paper Mario game, since Sticker Star. And that was before I knew how much they screwed up the formula. Thankfully, that's now changed now that we finally have a proper remake to the TTYD, minus the woke changes, half of the FPS, and the new jazzy music being worst than the original zany soundtrack. It would be nice to see the original get a proper glow up too, but I think a proper sequel for the next entry would be the way to go.
This game is amazing so far and I feel like Undertale got a bit of inspiration from this game. The sense of humor is similar at parts & some concepts are the same
These are the exact same game mechanics as the original Paper Mario Game, which is on Nintendo Switch Online. Just saying you can get a great experience for next to nothing comparatively

@@TheCodeda okay, good. Chapter 4 still has some issues, but the backtracking is still better in the remake. It took just as much effort for Intelligent Systems to remake this game as it did for them to make an original Paper Mario game like Origami King and Color Splash.
Great review Glen! I have such nostalgia for this game. Happy to see I can finally replay it and relive the experience for a new play through 🥳
Maybe you don't realize this, but frame rate is rarely ever a choice. It most likely runs at 30 because the switch can't run a consistent 60.
Idk- Metroid Prime remastered ran at a consistent 60 fps.
The visual upgrade is massive. Not subtle tbh. Watching digital foundries break down and it is incredible
@@SwitchUpYt love your content BTW bro. You are one of the reasons I want to start reviewing games
I’ve been playing it like hell for these past few days
I love it, I’ll just be sad when it’s over
Is it really that good?
@@keithpalacios9417 I like it, I’m an older gamer, I even enjoy it when it’s hard and believe me, I’ve been stuck 😂
How is it?
Only played Paper Mario on the Wii, loved it was so funny. Hope they do a remake.
As always great vid guys
New hardware and 30 frames is an odd change??
Great for new comers and nostalgia but do we wanna pay another £40 for it?
Overpriced in my opinion for essentially not a lot of additional content some have already played.
thanks for the channel guys
Always awesome to watch
Overpriced perhaps for owners of the original. Well worth it for those that don’t own it.
I'm glad they remastered this gem. I just bought the game. Hopefully the next Paper Mario adventure will be a follow up to this.
Haven’t played the original in so long. I can’t wait to dive into this. Man, the Switch is still pumping out quality titles.
Thank you for the great review. Glad you finally got to play the game. I never played the Gamecube version either and would rather get this than spend $100 or so on the original.
Hey SwitchUp, just letting you know that your reviews playlist has some random movie and arm wrestling video in it around the 7-8 months ago uploaded videos. Look for borderlands 3 and wargroove 2 reviews. Cheers!
Pretty excited for this one. Heard it was very good, and when I was a kiddo closest I got to this game was a rental
One of the best games and most elusive for the GameCube now made accessible to all, done in a tasteful manner too. Nintendo once again proving why they’re the masters of their craft.
Is it really that good? I've never even played Origami King. Does it matter?
@@keithpalacios9417Origami King came out after this game, they’re entirely disconnected.
@@Artersaand TTYD is so much better. Origami King tried with its writing unlike Sticker Star and Color Splash, but the battle system still sucks beyond boss fights.
I love this game with a passion
Glen says "visuals are FANTASTIC... the extra details really do increase the level of charm" just as GIANT paper jugs come on screen hahahah. Please tell me that was intentional
Thank you for the review! I will definitely be buying this one. I loved the first one on n64, what a lovely game!
This is worth picking up twice even with an original copy I LOVE this game
As someone that doesn’t like turn based RPGs much, I’m having an amazing time with this game. Picked Hellblade 2 and this on the same day. 30 min in HB2 and 10h into this so far. Tells you everything :D
Fun game so far. A dialogue skip or fast forward is needed. While some of the writing is funny, it shouldn’t be forced. Only gripe. 9/10
I'm glad you didn't play the original.
Makes it even more special
Never played the Gamecube version of this but I might pick it up, but tired of my backlog growing even longer.
I have a GameCube from back in the day, but never played this. Now seems like the time!
The 30 fps and slow text is bugging me so much.
Like good game, I don't think it's as great as everyone else.
But it's a bit upseting because replability is way down since the game moves like a snail.
It feels like a bad dream compared to the original
The text speed isn’t any different from the original.
As for the frame, you people get bothered by it way too much for as lame as it is.
Played it when it first came out, still have my original copy such a great game but I haven’t picked up the new one yet cause I didn’t think I needed to play it again, but I think ima go get it now hahah
thanks Glen
Havn't gotten it yet but I'm buying a physical copy on my next check!
Played Mario RPG a couple of months ago. Although I liked it overall, it was too simplistic for me. The final boss was fun. I might get this for my son if he shows interest.
Origami King is a lot more interesting from a gameplay perspective, and has charming writing. Might be a good one to play along with your son!
Did you fight the true final boss though 🤔
@@joelsutton2858 hmmmm, Who and/or where can it be found?
Google : How to Unlock the Monstro Town Door
The secret boss is Culex
@@joelsutton2858 I actually did it, but thank you. I thought I could've missed it as I did with a couple of mini games. Not a fan of them anyway.
Never had the chance to play the original game but so far I am really enjoying my time with it
60 vs 30 fps does influence gameplay in this game since it has quick time events. So yeah, it’s a trade you do for better graphics. It is okay for me but the origami king didn’t need 60fps cause of better gameplay which doesn’t need to precise.
I read that the quick time events have been re-coded to account for the drop in frame rate.
@@SwitchUpYtthat is true according to Digital Foundary in their analysis.
@@makasete30as someone who played the original, I could tell. Guarding and super guarding were made easier to compensate for the frame rate cut, so whatever the reason was, they at least did some work around unlike BiS DX.
One of my favorite games from back in the day! 😊 Happy to have it again
I preordered, and picked up on day of release. Both to get my preorder bonus, and to add to the overall sales numbers that make a Nintendo want to make more of this type of thing…
It won’t get played till at least Christmas though, as there are way too many other games on my list to play. This will be a good gift under the tree that the kids get to give me, that they have no idea about… 😅
I wonder if we’ll finally discover the true identity of the mysterious Mr. L 🤔
PLEASE give 64 this treatment
Never played this before, but picked it up day one as I had heard so many good things about it!
This game desperately needs a skip button..
Sigh, another one for the wishlist… Never played it, but really want to!
I wish it was fast pace combat tho, bc it looks very nice.🤷♀️❤
I am getting it today, can't wait to jump into it.
so excited to play this!
Guess I’m in the minority then. I actually liked that.
A frog??? Wasnt it a cricket before
In the original Japan release of the GC version it was a Frog.
Yeah. I like that they didn’t censor Vivian this time around and stuck with the Japanese original script.
@@Mojo1356 Oh I thought they did the censored version? I definitely heard wrong then
@@alexbiersner3350 yes you did. They didn’t censor Vivian this time since trans folks are getting more support, rightfully so.
Been looking forward to this one. Thank you for the review 🎮
RIP audience member with a helpful item. The Shy Guy was just trying to help!
Been on a gaming slump for months, could this be the game that fixes it? Never played the og but I've heard great things and this review makes it seem like a solid game and remake. Now I just gotta convince myself to grab the Switch and actually give it a try😅
Real excited to pick this one up
Which is the one that is on Switch online app?
Paper Mario for the N64, the very first game in the Paper Mario series.
Paper Mario. The predecessor to this game
@@Umbrella2 Alright yeah that was the one i was playing! I thought it was this one but then i read this was on gamecube. Thx I play so many games i just use Save state
@@dariushines1251 Thank you and omg is your name about the Darius Schmup cause i am playing the whole series as we speak and i am LOVING it!
@HomemadeIndie as much as I love shmups(ikaruga and gunbird 2is my fav) I have never played the darius series! I'm just an old guy who is too unoriginal to think of a catchy user name 🤷🏿♂️🤣🤣🤣
I avoided this on the GameCube and it looks like I’ll do the same on the switch. Random and turn-based battles are just not for me
Not a fan of turn based RPGs, but damn, that art style is so pretty. I wish they'd make a fully paper cutout 3D action platformer at some point, too.
No need to be "stationary" its a pretty good game
Never played the original, I’m sure is a great game, not my thing though 😊 thanks for the punctual review!
Paper Mario 64 is great and all, but it just can’t compete with TTYD imo.
I think no other paper mario will beat the n64 one. The music, starting moments and story, are one of a kind
So excited this game is being brought to the masses
Give me a remake of the original Paper Mario or give me death.
Gonna pick it up in the futur.
I'm liking this game but not loving it. The backtracking drives me nuts and then sometimes I get lost in the pipes 😂 I'm enjoying myself but just not as much as I was hoping. That's hype for you 🤷🏾♀️
You’d have been driven mad with the original then if you don’t like the backtracking in this version.
@@Mojo1356 that's what I keep hearing and yeah sounds like. I'm starting to get used to it now. About half way in.
@@TheCodeda okay, good. Chapter 4 still has some issues, but the backtracking is still better in the remake. Meanwhile, chapter 7 was by far the worst chapter in the original because of the backtracking. Thank god it’s much better here.
Also, I would hope you get used to it because the world of TTYD is fantastic. My second favorite in the series. It would be a shame if the backtracking ruined it, which it very well could in the original.
I’ll wait for switch 2 maybe we get 60fps
I just don’t get how something like Mario Odyssey can run at silky smooth 60fps and this.. can’t ?
Yup it’s not even a huge bump to get it running at 60fps. They could have optimised a little better and got it running for sure. Mark
Mario Odyssey has to interlace it (showing one half of the pixels in one frame and another half in the other frame) to run at 60 in handheld.
@@ironicdivinemandatestan4262 And yet it does. Looks better too, has MUCH bigger, more complex worlds, a lot more going on.
Paper mario though?? I find the whole "but it's the Switch" excuse hard to justify when Even the Gamecube version ran at 60!
That’s really my only gripe with the game, but it’s not a deal breaker for me since they at least altered the timing for guards and action commands to compensate.
The game looks great but we shouldn’t accept 30FPS when the original 20 years or so ago was at 60FPS.
