  • San Francisco Airport about May 1937 as filmed by a relative with an 8MM camera. Especially interesting to compare the Control Tower and Airport Operations to today's operations. Also interesting to notice the Boeing 247 and the DC-3.

Amazing footage! By the looks of it both planes are operated by United. Nice to see the DC-3 and Boeing 247 operating side by side. Thanks for sharing this with us.

The original uploader is correct: the two aircraft in this film are a Boeing 247-D and a Douglas DC-3A. Both are with United Air Lines, as can be verified by examining the logos on the airplanes' sides. San Francisco at this time was the western terminus of United's transcontinental air route, whose other end was in Newark just outside of New York City, and it was also a major stop on United's Pacific coast route which ran from Seattle to San Diego. Daniel Fabien is wrong; the DC-1 and DC-2 look distinctly different from the aircraft shown here, and United never operated either type.

I remember as a kid, going up on the roof of Chicago's Midway airport, and looking at the airplanes through coin operated binoculars. So disappointed when a few years later, there was no more roof viewing. It was so different to look through glass.

    It is a DC-1 or DC-2.
