I am impressed how your rendering process develops both lights and shadows simultanously! I first do flat local colors, then add shadows and highlights separately. Much more time consuming but more efficient if I want to change light scenarios. It is crazy how many different ways we got to achieve our final results :D
yep, most monsters have a humanoid base, one of the lecturers at uni said if your monster/creature has a humanoid form that has been distorted in some way, the human mind will be scared or uncomfortable looking at it. we recognize the shape but know something is wrong

What brush are you using for the rendering part? It looks so clean
Standard round brush for all of this I'm pretty sure. I used a brushy textured smudge to get some of those more expressive marks though.
