Maude can't stand Arthur's archaic views on homosexuality in this clip from Maude. Grab the Complete Series on DVD at www.shoutfacto...
    Uncompromising, enterprising, anything but tranquilizing…
Television history has given us many memorable, amazing women… and then there’s Maude. Bea Arthur (The Golden Girls) stars as the feisty and funny title character in Maude: The Complete Series, finally available on DVD from Shout! Factory.
Created by Norman Lear (All In The Family), Maude pushed the boundaries for network television during its six-year network run from 1972 to 1978. Often controversial and always refreshingly honest, the series never shied away from tackling the topical issues of the day, yet its depth of character and humor left audiences laughing all the way.
Decades after its initial broadcast, Maude remains a benchmark in television for its sharp, intelligent writing, impressive supporting cast (including Bill Macy, Adrienne Barbeau, Conrad Bain and Rue McClanahan) - and of course, the amazing Ms. Arthur. In a role that earned her a well-deserved Emmy® award, Bea Arthur created an indelible portrait of a fiercely liberated woman, paving the way for other noteworthy, female-driven sitcoms from Roseanne and Murphy Brown to 30 Rock.
    Right on, Maude!
Shout! Factory has devoted itself to the higher pursuit of pop culture for the past 10 years. I think that Maude was always trying to position itself as am outlet for bringing issues of the day to the forefront at a time when certain views were considered ratings death. You have to love these 70s shows for putting such issues front and centre in prime time..

@Micah Squires If I was alive the time this show existed, having a protagonist in a famous show that doesn't actually hate people like me would have literally made my day. As someone who grew up watching shows that doesn't even acknowledge queer people (but still being called queer by other kids all the time, even without knowing what it meant) definitely did not help me accept myself. I see my brother now watching cartoons with such good representation like She-ra and Kipo and The Wonderbeasts and he's growing up to be much more of a accepting person, and someone that stands up against the bullying of others(having completely, much more open views than our parents had when they raised me). Trust me, showing these things on tv make an ENORMOUS difference in someone's life.

I was seven years old when “Diff’rent Strokes” started and it became my favorite show. I didn’t learn until many years later about Conrad Bain’s past on “Maude.” I finally started to see some of those episodes about 10 years ago on Antenna TV.
He’s great in both roles; he was an ideal straight man and his timing and delivery were always on target. He plays the two roles very similarly, though “Diff’rent Strokes” was far less political.
This scene also makes me sentimental, as it reminds me of a kinder, gentler time here in America - a time when people could have political differences and still be friends.

She is actually very open minded. The problem comes when other people start being close minded and discriminating first, then she gets all defensive like anyone would when they're attacked. When you attack others first you should expect people defending themselves, that's the problem.

He's not attacking her. He's just disagreeing. Not everything is an attack. You can't force people to accept things; not without being tyrannical. Let people be as long as they aren't attacking each other, which like I said. He wasn't.

@@orangefox1231 If you put it that way then she's not attacking him either, she's just disagreeing as well, same thing. The same way you can't force people to "accept" things, you also can't force people to stay quiet, Maude doesn't accept what he says and she speaks her mind. The same thing I always say, let people be, in this case Arthur is not letting other people be. He started talking and complaining about it.

He’s breaking a major rule of being a house guest, being rude to your host. It’s her house, he should keep his trap shut if he knows it’ll cause discomfort for Maude and Walter.

Orange Fox there is nothing to disagree with is the point! It’s like saying “I don’t believe in black people”. What u are and aren’t attracted to shouldn’t be open for debate! Something just as asinine would be if I told a woman “oh don’t tell me 32 hours of natural child birth hurt. I’m a man don’t tell it hurt it didn’t hurt!” Now how can I say that? I’ve never gone through it how would I know? Same thing when someone says that about gay people. You’re not gay, how would u know? The real reason Arthur was upset was because like most men who have issues with it, it threatens their manhood. Makes them uncomfortable. Yeah they’re such MEN! 🙄

this was a time and era where people did not get offended so easily, before everyone became well..like snowflakes.

There were a lot of offended people, racists got offended, homophobes got offended, religious people got offended in that time. The same ones that call everybody else a "skowflake" always get offended by the simplest things.

@@KieroSi Not really, the ones who have always been bigots continue to be the worst, those who would throw a fit over seeing an interracial couple, even if the rights of other people don't affect them at all, they still whine and complain. Like I already said they call everybody a "snowflake", but when it's something that affects them they cry like babies.
In recent years they got angry as something as simple as a Cheerios commercial
featuring an interracial couple. Then they usually talk about God and Jesus,
but spreading hate at the same time, doing the exact opposite of what a christian should do.
When it comes to proponents of social justice of course there are radicals, but at least they soldier on to fight for other people's rights, and if there were no discriminatory people in the first place, social justice would have never been needed. The bigots are the ones who never had a trace of humanity or empathy, you should thank them for the people who now are fighting back.
