  • This is a film about a challenging trip to see the lava lake of the Erta Ale Volcano in the remote and dangerous Afar region of Ethiopia near its border with Eritrea.

I've spent 2 night on the Erta Ale in the early 2017. The guide said our team was the first 10 team that saw the new lava lake in the south of summit Erta Ale. What a good memory.

Thank you for posting this recent video of Erta Ale lava lake. I went to Ethiopia back in 2009 for my friend's traditional wedding ceremony which was amazing. We wanted to go to the volcano but ran out of time. In the meantime I am watching daily updates about the beautiful Icelandic volcano. Maybe a flight to Iceland will be on the cards. Greetings from the Train Lord in Australia.

When I did visit Iceland, it was interesting but no active volcano, although I did descend into an old magma chamber (ua-cam.com/video/VRC8WlhLnFg/v-deo.html). When COVID permits, I'd like to go to see the Icelandic volcano.

@@tletter yes I too visited Iceland on a modelling assignment from Italy back in 1985 and spent one entire night watching films of volcanoes. It was before I knew about geology which has me watching daily updates on the current situation of the Icelandic volcano. This shield volcano could carry on for generations. Amazing to see with the current technology bringing it regularly to watching the constantly changing activity on a big TV screen.

Given what’s happening in Tigray, not a good time to head to this general area.
Great video as always though and thanks for putting it together

Yes, before travelling to any volatile area, one is well advised to check their government's travel advisory, e.g. ua-cam.com/video/pjwyi5GDX-Q/v-deo.html , before making a decision.

@@tletter I was thinking the same thing, you took a risk anyways, a "westerner" is like a walking bag of money in certain areas of the World, it's sad but it's a fact.
Also to be taken in consideration is the fact that a lot of the locals are related to eachother, so you could have your guard selling you off to somebody, or the chief of police being first cousin to the local warlord or gang guy, lovely video, but I'd rather see you exploring Finland;-)

"A trip to hell and disappointment" is a fair summation of my experience. Just bear in mind that the condition at the volcano will change over time, so it might become worthwhile again.
