Welcome to Episode 1 of Pipe Organs of NYC presented by the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, taking viewers on a virtual musical tour of the grand instruments of our Chapter.
Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the feature of our first episode. The Cathedral is the mother church of the Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Located on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue across from Rockefeller Center, the imposing Gothic edifice, designed by James Renwick Jr. and built between 1858 and 1879, is one of the most recognizable in the country.
Saint Pat's is home to the mighty Kilgen Organ (Chancel Organ, Opus 3920 (1928) and Gallery Organ, Opus 5918 (1930)).
    The program is as follows:
    Played by Dr. Jennifer Pascual:
    Communion: Ave Maria
(from ADVENT: FIRST RELIGIOUS SUITE FOR ORGAN)
    Pietro A. Yon (1886-1943)
    Frère Jacques! Dormez-vous?
    (dedicated to Pietro A. Yon)
    Jacques C. Ungerer (1872-1957)
    Played by Daniel Brondel:
    II. Andante sostenuto
(from SYMPHONIE GOTHIQUE (NO. 9), OP. 70)
    Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937)
    March
(from Act 2 of THE LOVE FOR THREE ORANGES, OP. 33)
    Sergey Prokofiev (1891-1953)
    arr. Jean Guillou (1930-2019)
    Played by Michael Hey:
    Pageant
    Leo Sowerby (1895-1968)
    VI. Grand choeur dialogué
    (from SIX PIÈCES D’ORGUE)
    Eugene Gigout (1844-1925)

I am speechless! I hear the pipes every Sunday when my wife and I attend St Patrick's and we are in awe of the glorious music that surely has divine inspiration. Thank you.

Very impressive playing, although why anyone would want to devote ANY time at all to learning Sowerby‘s Pageant is beyond me. Very impressive technical competence and all that, but a truly terrible piece of music. Written for Fernando Germani as a technical challenge, he said it wasn‘t difficult enough. Arrogance itself, there, but then he was Italian!. It’s a VERY bad piece of VERY difficult music!

When I was a teenager living in NY I used to play a number of organs all over the city, and practiced the organ at St. Patrick's , the organ to the left of the sanctuary. I never got to play the big one in the balcony because you needed a key to use the elevator to get up there. Its one of my many regrets that I never got to play it. Its great that it is still in use and well cared for. Thanks.
