A hula hoop is a toy hoop that is twirled around the waist, limbs or neck. The modern hula hoop was invented in 1958 by Arthur K. "Spud" Melin and Richard Knerr, but children and adults around the world have played with hoops, twirling, rolling and throwing them throughout history.
The hula hoop gained international popularity in the late 1950s, when a plastic version was successfully marketed by California's Wham-O toy company. In 1957, Knerr and "Spud" Melin, starting with the idea of Australian bamboo "exercise hoops", manufactured 1.06-metre (42 inch) hoops with Marlex plastic.
With giveaways and national marketing and retailing, a fad was started in July 1958. twenty-five million plastic hoops were sold in less than four months, and in two years, sales reached more than 100 million units.
Carlon Products Corporation was one of the first manufacturers of the hula hoop. During the 1950s, when the hula hoop craze swept the country, Carlon was producing more than 50,000 hula hoops per day.
The hoop was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York, in 1999.

Literally. It's this 1000 dollar gimmick they sell where the hoops are interconnected to give the illusion of spinning multiple hoops. Anyone can use this thing. It's all over UA-cam on these type shows. Not talent. The other trick is impressive but any intermediate/advanced hooper can do that

I disagree. The slinky thing at the beginning is a gimmick. The hoops are all interconnected with clear wires so it works completely differently than if it was a bunch of separate hoops. Look at the way it bounces when fully extended when she's doing the rainbow thing and how it moves more like a flexible tube on her body, etc. It makes it work like one hoop - way easier. I've seen this thing sold on hoop maker websites and it's not cheap (like over 1000). I do hoop stuff so I know a thing or 2. The other trick that she did was nice but it's kinda standard. It's not easy though. Whatever. I support the art form and wish this young lady all the best on her hoop journey. I just wanted to expose the slinky thing (that anyone can do) because I think it's time for hoop dance to evolve beyond a series of circus tricks. Not to carp on circus arts - they have their place, but I have some artsy-fartsy ideas of my own...

That is interesting. I do not believe that the hoops are connected as the performer uses single hoops during her routine. It would be however an interesting matter for debate. I hope others might weigh in on this. Thanks for commenting Nina. 😎
