I think the Sandmonster is based on Antlion which is some kind of flying insect. And its larva stage hunts other insects by catching them into pit holes made in sand.

I'd say it's freecam combined with an xbox controller. with a controller you can have the cam move at diffrent speeds including very slow. controllers also give a more fluent effect when moving.

There is that bit in witcher 3 when you get to Avallach's desert world. you see/fight those huge beetle things...I think somewhere in there Geralt visited the desert, it's hard to cross, but not impossible.

I’m running a D&D 5E game in the witcherverse and the party are just about to go to the edge of Korath desert. I’m thinking of using some Darksun lore to fill in the gaps. The lost civilisation who used magic that drew upon organic life essence and that’s why there is a desert. Also I need a excuse for cannibal halflings.

The world hoping mission in the Witcher is one of my favorites I really like the desert seeing that planet in the sky at daytime looked really cool
Kinda wish there was a way to go back through. Like post game the portals are just always opened with the portal back being in the elf world.

I believe the antlion is the adolescent stage of the Lacewing if I'm remembering correctly.
You know, the nilfgaardian patrols could be in the desert with the mission to find evidence for a long lost civilisation or some magical artefacts.
