Imagine my surprise meeting the ofieri merchants as an Arab myself, needless to say I was instantly hooked. Everything about them screams Arab/Middle Eastern to me, their mythology, which closely resembles Sufism, their clothing, names, appearances, land descriptions, locations and their love and respect for horses. All distinctly Arab things.
Thx for the video. The first thing that catches my attention when I first saw them were their clothes, they're reflecting the middle eastern ones obviously. But as a Turkish; when I saw they called their swords "Ofieri KILIJ" its when I decided to read about them because it's a Turkish word. If you google it you'll see this info: "A kilij is a type of one-handed, single-edged and moderately curved saber used by the Timurid Empire, Mamluk Empire, Ottoman Empire, and the later Turkic Khanates of Central Asia and Eurasian steppes" all mentioned Empires are Turkish. At this scene you show, he says: "A land of fallen Empires, kingdoms at their peak and tribes that know..." that lead me to think that he talks about Anatolia, or Asia Minor (Land which currently Turkey is located on). And he says its constituted by many polities. This makes the Ottoman Empire a very strong candidate since it was, perhaps, the most ethnically diverse empire of the world. But their clothes and physical appearance looks more like Persian at the same time. And this made me think that they inspired by the Great Seljuk Empire perhaps. Seljuk Empire was a predecessor of the Ottoman Empire, (arguably) and it was a Persian-Turkish Empire. I don't know if the dates in the game and the history are going parallel, but at 1200s both Seljuk and Ottoman Empires didn't exist. Great Seljuk collapsed at 1194 and the Ottoman Empire was founded in 1299. But the Anatolian Seljuk Empire existed during that time period. It was also founded by one of the members of the dynasty of the Seljuk Empire. By the way, Anatolia also perfectly fits the description of beautiful lands and nature. I just wanted to share my speculations, and I believe many others might be made by others who know the region, it also could be one of the civilizations from Mesopotamia, I want to hear them as well. The other possibility might be that they use some sort of eclecticism or "orientalism" and just picked some things from different cultures, time periods and civilizations and create these characters. But I believe it will be great if they will make some game which Geralt will go Anatolia during the Ottoman reign, and that great city will be Istanbul (Constantinople), and he will explore that world, like Assasin's Creed Revelations.
I think the ofieri are a combination of the ottoman Turks and the Mongols/Huns. Parts of it could also be based on the Persian Empire. It seems like a bunch of things.
I always found it kinda weird that this highly skilled rune-maker decided to set up shop in a small village rather than a place like Novigrad or Oxenfurt
I got really excited during HoS when the ship wrecks and we're on the beach because I thought we were in/near Ofieri territory but was disappointed when it was like half a mile from Novigrad.
*As someone who is fluent in both Farsi (Persian) and Arabic (and has Middle-eastern background), those names sound incredibly familiar - and very Islamic, especially Akhmet (which is a form of 'Muhammed' - a notable individual in Islam). Ofir reminds me of Yemen or Saudi Arabia. As a whole, it gives off 'Arab gulf' vibes, due to the tribal nature and all.* I have a theory. Ofir could be a representation of the gulf states as they have many tribes, which play a massive part in their culture. Tribes and empires in the Arabian gulf have used sharp swords and clothing similar in style to the stuff Ofier have in the past. Additionally, the ruler 'Nibras' has a name thats very Arabic in origin, not Persian, Turkish or African. Furthermore, the Nilfguardian's refer to it as 'the land beyond the sea'. Coincidentally, the Mediterranean sea separates Europe from the Arab gulf states (perhaps i'm connecting dots that are too far apart, but oh well). Also, your pronunciation is fine for someone who isn't Middle-Eastern xD
Ofier as a city reminds me of medieval Baghdad and Cairo. The Ofieri merchant mentions that his city would make Nilfgaard look dull. At on point during the Golden Age of Islam, Baghdad was the biggest and richest city in the world. He also mentions the amount of philosphers and scholars there, which Baghdad was known for. Their respect for horses reminds me of bedouin Arabian culture and their respect for horses and camels.
It’s amazing how we finally get to see Ofier in a Dark Horse comic. Hope we get more adventures with Geralt in this fascinating Kingdom!! I love the North, Long Live Radovid and all, but it would be amazing to see more of this world. Would love to see the Golden City of Nilfgaard as well.
Totally agree with that they seem to be based on Arabic/Persian people but also Ottoman. They even call their dress Shavovary - also known as Shalwar or Sirwal by the Punjabi/Turks - wide leg clothing for mounted combat which they have mastered - like Japanese Hakama pants. Also their swords in the game are called Kilij which is Turkish for Sabre. Again these are curved to suit mounted warfare. The pointed helmet, is very similar to the Saracens/Ottoman war armour and their speech and name are totally Arabic based. All in all like Dothraki but more civilised and less racist as George RR Martin portrayed 🤣
The land Ofier is clearly based on East Africa. Not just because there are zebras there, but because the name of one Ofier's neighbours, Zangvebar, was once one of the names used for the real island of Zanzibar, which is just off the East African coast.
No, it is based on the culture of the Middle East, and by the way Zanzibar is very influenced by the Arab culture and for a long time was a reward from the Empire of Oman
Yes, you are right. I have only just realised by reading my comment that I was getting Ofir and Zerrikania mixed up for some reason at the time. I'm sorry.
Ofieri swords looks like Turkish swords. Ofir might be Mamluks who ruled Egypt or any kind of middle east civilizations. Btw there is an item named "Ofieri Kilij". The word kilij(written as kılıç) means sword in turkish.
These are Arab swords, before the Turks came from Central Asia and changed their Mongol swords to Arab Middle Eastern swords. These swords existed before you. It is not acceptable to call them Turkish swords, and if we go to Mongolia and Central Asia, we will not find anything like it.
3:02 I've seen a video of a breathtakingly beautiful lake in Pakistan like that. I guess I thought of Offir as being like India/Pakistan rather than somewhere in Africa
Always fascinated about Ofier and the land surrounding it. As and Arab from Oman, when I saw The swords, clothes, names and everything in the game it gave me Arabian and Persian vibes, feels so mystic and can imagine how the place looks with Geralt wearing some kind of armor that’s light but covers him from the sun’s heat with curved swords, that would be cool.
Can you please do a video on zerrikania? Through my play throughs I’ve heard it pop up time and again. When I was doing a contract, the guard captain said the victims were like corpses from the zerrikanian desert that died from the heat. Love your videos by the way, you are my go to guy for Witcher lore. I’d be very grateful if you could take my request into mind
Great video! Could you do a video on the Continent? Where everything is located in relation to the Northern Realms? Such as the things we do and don't know about the rest of the world geographically?
If they didn’t bugger the economy in the game so much, his prices would likely be a lot lower. The first two games you struggle to have any money. In Witcher 3, coins are basically all over the place.
Milan Lomibao There is Haakland which is located to the north of Zerrikania. They're basically nomadic horse archers that live in steeped plains kind of like the Mongols or other Central Asians.
Just a little correction: you see not a single turban. It's a European chaperon, just like e.g. Vernon Roche wears. Those are essentially hoods with long tails worn in a hipster way. A true turban can't be taken on and off, but has to be wrapped each time you put it on!
